Not Updated For Current Season
The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
Early game strategy
Start the game like any other building Sona with a gold income item, spellthief's edge. This item is especially useful with Sona because of her Q and passive. Your first move should be Sona's Q Hymn of Valor. Use it twice on the pad before going to lane to proct her Power Chord. Stay close to minions and close enough to the enemy Champions to land some basic attacks and Hymn of Valor. This should add up some gold early on while also doing MASSIVE damage to the enemies. Make sure to always use your Power Chord with Hymn of Valor Bonus effect for extra poke. Next skill to level up should be your heal Aria of Perseverance. This allows you to stay closer to your enemies for longer and heal your ADC. If you are in fear of being ganked or want some movement speed to back up or chase unlock her Song of Celerity third. If you are doing well poking and pushing lane, add another point to her Q. First back you have to make a crucial decision on how you want to proceed playing in lane. If your lane is being pushed to hard or you are taking more damage than you can heal, you would want to pick up a defensive item Glacial Shroud. If you do not have the gold quite yet and want to pick up boots and more pots, this is also a safe alternative. proceed to try and land some basic attacks and skills to keep your lane opponents away from tower. (This is where TP helps.) Sona is very effective when it comes to defending your lane tower from damage. I have personally played 6 games where my tower has not lost 1 HP. If you are WINNING lane, pick up a Sheen for some extra poke damage! Grab boots when you have either the Sheen or Glacial Shroud. Yes, you are going to build an Iceborn Gauntlet.
Now that you are poking the enemy ADC and support away from your minions, this allows your ADC to rack up some farm and pokes of their own. Always initiate on a Power Chord proct with Hymn of Valor. This should make the enemy either weak for the fight, or make them back off allowing you to chase. Sona is very effective from the bush when she cannot be seen and where she can safely close in on the enemy without them knowing. Depending on how low HP the enemy Duo is, you should either wait until level 6 to guarantee a kill or kite and poke to death at earlier levels. Sona works great along side Caitlyn. Caitlyn has great poke with her Q and can set traps allowing you to use Sona's Q then Power Chord combo.
The item sequence you should go for is somewhere near this,
Starting items: Spelltheif's Edge and Mana pots.
First back: (if winning lane) Sheen, (if losing lane) Glacial Shroud. If you cannot afford these items, I would recommend boots and more pots.
Next important item: Frostfang. (for extra gold and damage.)
Next up, Finish Iceborn Gauntlet
Then, finish boots OR buy Fiendish Codex.
Make sure to finish your Frost Queens Claim AFTER your Gauntlet.
The next item you will want to get is the Rylai's Crystal Scepter. Depeding on if you want more HP or Damage, buy the makings of the Scepter in whatever order suits the sitiation.
By this point you should be kiting and pumping out a TON of damage and cc for your team, so now lets worry about more sustain. The last great item to pick up on Sona is the Spirit Visage. This keeps sona in lane, teamfights, and anywhere she needs to be.
