Introduction
is an AP Mage who requires a lot of skill, this is mainly because all her abilities are skill shots. She is incredibly hard however also incredibly fun and rewarding if played right. I personally have not played her that much lately, but back in season 3 she was my go-to mid laner. Lux has received a fair amount of competitive play and is picked up then and there. This is coupled with her ranked popularity which fluctuates between 10-20%. In this guide I will give you a run-down on long range AP mage and how YOU can dominate in mid-bot lane with her.
Pros
|
+ Easy To Play, Hard To Master + Long-Range + Crowd Control Loaded + Good waveclear + Powerful Late-Game + Hard to burst down with Prismatic Barrier + LASER ULTIMATE Final Spark |
Lux is overall a balanced and fair champion in my opinion. Her win-rate sits around 50% making her, in my eyes, fair. She has a ton of utility bundled into a mage coupled with an amazing shield and really devastating ultimate. A lot of catch potential |
Cons
|
-First times will not be perfect - Easy to miss skill shots - No mobility, positioning vital - Miss snare a lot and you will get flamed - Full combo long range, danger to proc Illumination - Has fair share of counters and hard match ups - Hard to master |
Lux is definitely no easy champion. Having all skill shots makes her fun but at the same time rather difficult. Expect to come under a lot of heavy criticism missing these shots from teammates. She has his cons but a good lux can easily work his/her way around this. |
Flash
Must Take Summoner Spell//This summoner is a necessity on Zed, it allows him to avert a dangerous situation or to create one by flashing in to gain extra ground for Death Mark.
Let them burn
//Extra bit of damage to ensure that Zed can definitely assassinate the target. Really good against self healing champions such as Dr. Mundo and Swain.
Take for Top Lane
//Take this summoner spell for Top Lane. You do not want to cop the blame when your team mates get caught out for a 4v5 and you're stranded top laning solely farming. This spell is essential for split pushing as it allows you to join a team fight from anywhere.
Situational
// Exhaust is situational for a ranked game while in champ select. If you're facing up against another assassin such as Talon or Fizz I can definitely recommend this summoner spell as it nullifies their damage when they commit to an all in against you.
Time For My Favorite Section, Items
Why My Core Items Are Relevant To Lux?
Sorcerer's Shoes Well boots are boots, they help make you move faster. Being immobile enough as it is, it doesn't help moving like a snail without these. The Magic Pen comes in nice just to hit that extra bit harder! |
Morellonomicon has been a vital item for mages ever since [Athene's unholy grail] got nerfed. Morello's is now a staple item for mages and Lux is no exception. This item provides stats which the lady of luminosity can use to benefit greatly, such as 20% cdr and efficient mana regen. |
Rabadon's Deathcap is the bread of butter of all mages. Is there any reason not to get this item? This item is the core of ability powered damage. There is a notable power spike when you obtain this item with its raw passive which amplifies all ability power. Get this item while ahead, and you're golden! |
Void Staff is the counter to all that pesky MR(Magic Resistance) tanks start to build up mid-game. This item is like slicing an apple with a knife, right through the middle. Once you get this item, squishes will start getting instagibbed by your full combo! |
Zhonya's Hourglass This item's active is so invaluable, being invulnerable for 2.5 seconds is enough to make that game winning play or save you from imminent death. This item's purchase order can be moved up against an AD assassin like Zed]. This item is so good that AD carries drool to have something similar to this, being under fire then suddenly turning golden invulnerable under fire is amazing. One of the best parts is, your rotation of cool downs is ready to be unleashed. |
Lich Bane is an incredible late game item. You will literally crushing squishes even with your auto attacks. This combined with Illumination will break health bars from 100-0. With all the Ability Power you acquire from the other items, you're one really strong mage! |
Situational Items
Rod of Ages is a nice item but that's mainly for the mana-chomping mages released back in the days like Karthus. I don't really see the need for this when there's a Morellonomicon
Abyssal Mask not a really good item for someone like Lux. Abyssal Mask lowers the magic resist of nearby enemies but since you're a long range Mage who shoots laser like Final Spark, your positioning should not be surrounded by many enemies in team fights.
Athene's Unholy Grail This item used to be a stable, but ever since the nerfs it just hasn't been the same. Morellonomicon is just too good for its cost.
Mejai's Soulstealer a really good item, I actually would recommend this item. If you're feeling a little cocky or arrogant, go for it!
Liandry's Torment good item but I think we have enough magic penetration as it is. The only time I would buy this item is when there are two massive health-stacking tanks. The item slot to replace would be Lich Bane.
I really like Luden's Tempest as an item, it is a perfect replacement for Deathfire Grasp, this item allows Lux that extra waveclear power to demolish all the minions. I think in terms of mages, this item was definitely needed, instead of one item which applied mainly to Ap assassins, we get an item which is suitable to Ap champions as a whole. The problem I have though, is that Luden's Tempest is too exemplary for everything Ability Powered, for example, I see a lot of Ap supports such as Sona building luden's,and we all know Riot's stance on Ap support and mid laners being interchangeable in any way *cough cough Lulu*. Don't be surprised to see a nerf to Luden's, it is definitely a strong item right now, possibly a bit too strong.
AP Price Changes
The price changes for ability power itemization were really good, making Needlessly Large Rod 1250 gold now means that I have a more realistic backing price to aim for. Consistently needing that 1600 gold surplus was an absolute pain sometimes, and now since the price has been bumped down, this vital component is very reachable!

Lux's Sorceress Powers
Q
Lux's Q is what is used to compare the good ones from the mediocres. The catch potential with this ability is significant, however missing this skill can cause a few shots from team mates.
|
W
Prismatic Barrier is the 'utility spell' for Lux, and heck it is one utility spell. The shield is invaluable and makes you that extra bit more tanker. I really like this ability since it's really fun to throw out and the potential for a 5 man shield will definitely receive a few props from team mates. This ability helps with
|
E
This item is Lux's bread and butter. It has so many uses it is insane. Max this first for a lot of (AOE) area of effect damage plus many more added features such as
|
R
The ultimate in which Lux is renowned for. I still remember when this ultimate was called Finales Funiken or something like that, ahh the memories. This ability has surprisingly a fairly short cool down for the damage it provides, use this ability in conjunction with the others and health bars will be getting shread.
|
I scale Lux's abilities like this
I max Lucent Singularity because of the area of effect damage it can provide me coupled with the stronger slow. Then I max Light Binding second because of the increase in damage and lower cool down. The second max can vary I feel because if i'm not doing so well I prefer to max Prismatic Barrier for the shield it will provide me, thus making me still worth while. If i'm having a bad game as Lux I will normally miss 70% of my Q's, so no point really in maxing it.

role in a team fight is to protect your back line while also dealing the most damage. You want to keep your distance while team fighting, being an elusive character while also throwing out your many abilities.
Pre Team Fight
- Poke with Lucent Singularity
- If you manage to snare with Light Binding don't be afraid to Final Spark, low cd anyways
- Clear the minion wave
During The Team Fight
- Keep a fair distance, you're long range so you can still do tons of damage!
- Peel for your ad carry meaning, shield them when they're under fire and try to snare their predators
- Slow with Lucent Singularity
- Snare, line up Final Spark hope to get 5]], try to get the back line e.g. try to hit the with Final Spark enemy Varus
[/list
POKE COMP/LOCK DOWN COMP
Lux is so versatile she can fit in almost any team composition. However, what I have chosen for her is something which can greatly benefit her. A team composition similar to this is golden for Lux, mainly because it has so much lock down and burst potential. You want ulti's like Cataclysm and Curse of the Sad Mummy locking them down allowing for an aim of Final Spark. Lux is a great champion, in the right team composition she wrecks, poke/cc is what she brings however it is all skill shots, so why not have a team comp that has lock down cc.
Lux Support/Thoughts
support is not too bad. It is definitely underrated because of the more traditional ones but it most certainly works. You have something to peel for your adc in the form of primsatic barrier and also a forms of crowd control in Light Binding coupled with Lucent Singularity. A really niche pick when you call mid first and lock in, however someone else has other plans.
Items On Lux Support
support has the great benefit of not having a set build path. She can build whatever she likes whether it be more Ability Power or Supportish. Nevertheless, there are still core items for Lux in which she should always build while in the support role.
> >
These items should always be built on Lux, boots could also be replaced with Mobility Boots. I like Spellthief's Edge because it gives me incentive to poke in lane and the gold generation if used to full advantage is insane. Sightstone because you know, if I don't ward team mates will start flaming with lame insults like "gg no wards report lux". Plus, sightstone is worth it overtime because of the free wards, $$$. The boots are very situational but I would prefer Sorcerer's Shoes for that extra poke damage.
Summoner Spells
Well, the two stable summoner spells I have for Lux support are Flash and Exhaust. Flash because its flash and exhaust so I can slow down and cut the efficiency of the enemy adc. Plus, Exhaust also has a nice cast range meaning its good for slowing down fleeing enemies!
What Stops Lux Being Lux?
has amazing power however there is counter play to it. There are a few items which you should watch out for.
1. Mikael's Blessing land a snare on enemy Vayne? Thresh will come in and use the active. Tough item to play against for Lux since her snare is now nullified. Don't worry, just try and peel for the ad carry.
2. Quicksilver Sash Same active as Mikael's Blessing but the person itself can just pop it. Another tough one.
3. Banshee's Veil This one isn't so bad because you can out play. Pop the spell shield and $$$.
