Introduction



(Play this while reading this guide to get the mood ^^!)


Welcome to my Leona Guide! As a supporter, Leona is one of the most durable supporter in League Of Legends, yet still provides a good care for AD Carry or even the whole team. She can deal with almost any situation in team fight from initiating to retreating. Leona, in fact, an easy champion to play but really hard to master. In this guide, I will carefully explain every detail how to play her well.

I will also teach you some tips and tricks to play with any support you want to play.

Summoner Spells


  • Exhaust makes enemy useless ìn 2.5 seconds. Therefor, it's a great tool in both team fight and laning phrase.
  • Most supports use Exhaust as a primary summoner spell to slow down enemy, kill secured or even to run away from the enemy.
  • In team fight, Exhaust is usually used on enemy AD Carry or enemy that aims your AD Carry.
  • Leona with Exhaust usually goes with Vayne, Caitlyn, Jinx, Miss Fortune, and Varus
  • Flash is pretty much standard on any champion, any time, any situation.
  • Most supports like Leona use Flash and Zenith Blade to catch an out-position enemy or enemy that's out of reach.
  • As a initiator, Leona has to risk her life to open combat. After using Zenith Blade, use Flash to leave the combat if your health is too low. Sometimes it's better not to die immediately.

Other Choices




Ignite helps your AD Carry pick up the kill even faster, but you have to Ignite when enemy health is about 1/2 to avoid picking up the kill yourself.


Choose Heal when ever you see enemy team has a lot of AOE. It's a good alternative choice for your team.

* Never take out take Flash because Flash is not just a escape solution for Leona, it helps in a lot of situation including team fight and chasing enemy.

Recommend Runes



As Leona, you really want to maximize her possibility to tank and do damage. Since her all her skills have a small magic damage output, we need some penetrations both physical damage and magic damage. As Leona don't go with Ability Power, the longer she's alive, the stronger she is.

Greater Mark of Hybrid Penetration
Greater Mark of Hybrid Penetration will increase both her physical damage output and magic damage output. This can really help Leona in teamfight since all her skills have pretty high magic damage output already. I strongly recommend using 3 of this in your rune set.


    Although we already have
Greater Seal of Armor, you're gonna need some extra armors for Leona. Now, why I only use 6 of these runes? The reason is simple, I don't want to turn her into a rock (Like Malphite). If you want Leona really help your team to the win then don't go full tank.


Greater Seal of Armor. Why? Because in laning phrase, you're going to be poked a lot. This rune give you a good amount of armor and increase your survivability throughout the game. This rune is not just for Leona but many supports in general.


Greater Glyph of Magic Resist's definitely going to make Leona extremly strong situation wheather against AP Carry or just against another Support.

Other Choices

Greater Glyph of Mana Regeneration is your little mana booster for you in the game. Well, Leona is not a mana hungry champion like Alistar, Sona, etc. So if you think you're gonna miss your Zenith Blade or Solar Flare a lot. Put 3 of these guys to your rune set.

Items and Usage



As Leona, you want to build her tanky, yet still can passive buff for your teammates. I will show you how to have a good build at early stage of the game to the late stage of the game.



Starting Items

So why do I choose Ancient Coin but not Relic Shield. First, Leona is not an active champion at laning phrase, she is kinda passive cause she's a melee champion (She is easily got poked by AD Carry or another Support). Ancient Coin grants her ability to be passive, yet still be able to receive golds plus it increases 5 health regeneration and 3 mana regeneration. You can stand in the Bush or run around to not get banned for AFK (ಠ_ಠ), but keep in mind that you have to stay in range to get 2 golds per minion (Plus 1 gold from mastery, total 3 golds per minion).



Although you have Greater Seal of Armor and Greater Glyph of Magic Resist, there is no guarantee that you will never be poked. Total Biscuit of Rejuvenation ( Health Potion turns into this if you follow my mastery) gives you 20 HP and 10 Mana immediately; then, restores 150 HP and 20 mana over 15 seconds. After all, Leona is not a mana hungry champion.



Now, this ward depends on your AD Carry. If your AD Carry has a aggressive play style, he/she is probably going to push the minion wave up too high; therefore, you should put this ward in the River Bush. If your AD Carry is a type of passive player who just farm and waits for the right moment; then, try to keep it or put it in the Forward Bush.





Get this and become WARD DESTROYER ლ(ಠ益ಠლ).





Early Items

You really want to get Nomad's Medallion as soon as you return to base. Nomad's Medallion plus 2 more golds to every minions' death so total golds you will receive for every minion's death is 5 golds. Beside, it increases 8 health regeneration and 11 mana regeneration, plus 2 golds per 10 seconds.





Of course, you want to get it .... DUHHHH.




Sightstone provides 4 wards in your pocket and some extra health. In the laning phrase, if you're on blue team, make sure put 3 wards in Tri-Bush, River Bush and 1 in Forward Bush to maximize safety of your AD Carry. After laning phrase (10-15 minutes), you should be able to upgrade Sightstone to Ruby Sightstone.

Talisman of AscensionGrants 20% Cooldown Reduction, 10 health regeneration, 15 mana regeneration and 2 golds per 10 seconds. What can you ask for? It's a perfect item for Support. Remember to activate Talisman of Ascension frequently throughout the game in both engaging and retreating situation.




You now will have 5 wards in your pocket. Not only that, Ruby Sightstone increases 360 health keep you being tanky and supportive at the same time. My technique as a support is warding frequently at important places. I call this technique "War Zone'. Simply, when you get out of laning phrase, you have to ward as many as possible in the zone that you and your teammate are in. It's okay to lose a ward that placed in the zone you aren't there.



Mobility Boots will help you move quickly throughout the map. One of the most important factor of support is mobility. You have to help every teammate in your team not just the AD Carry. The reason I like Leona is because she can gank effectively, so with Mobility Boots, it's even easier to help your team.



Locket of the Iron Solari is a good idea to gain some extra magic resists and health regeneration for your team. Activating it grants your team a shield that absorbs 50 (+10 per level) damage. Also, it makes Leona extremly durable.



Oracle's Lens is a great item for detecting invisible champion like Evelynn, Twitch, Rengar, etc.

Almost likes a core item for Leona. Makes her extreamly tanky, durable, and it deals damage slowly in team fight to every enemy that stands near her. The bad thing about Sunfire Aegis that it doesn't have buff or aura for your team.




Randuin's Omen is kinda annoying to the enemy team which is good. Slow down attack speed and movement speed of enemy plus when activated slow down 35% of all nearby enemy. The problem is the same with Sunfire Aegis. This item is good against Vayne, Jax, Teemo, Kog'Maw, Tristana and Udyr.



I recommend using Thornmail against enemy team with high attack damage and mostly using basic attack since Thornmail is best used to counter champions that mainly rely on basic attacks such as Tryndamere, Ashe, Vayne, Jinx, Draven and Caitlyn.



Zeke's Herald Zeke's Herald give you and your team ability to dominate the game. Zeke's Herald will force your enemy to surrender, believe it or not. Don't use this item when your team is fall behind enemy team. JUST DON'T!






Enchantments


Item Sequence

Enchantment: Homeguard 450
Enchantment: Alacrity 450




Enchantment: Captain is really helpful in team fight or to help your teammates escape with the bonus of 8% movement speed for allied champions running toward you.




Better use this when you team is fall behind enemy team. It provides a good use to protect your base.




If you and your team is dominating the game, you will need this rune to make it even worse for the enemy team.

Abilities and Usage



Leona has a great set of skills for intiating and increasing her durability during combat. You will need a lot of pratice to master all her skills including Eclipse, believe me, it's not easy to play Eclipse well.





First, Leona's spells charge any enemy unit damaged with Sunlight for 3.5 seconds. When allied champions deal any damage wheather is basic attack or skillshot to those targets they consume the Sunlight debuff to deal 20 / 35 / 50 / 65 / 80 / 95 / 110 / 125 / 140 additional magic damage. Second, the additional magic damage will benefit from your teammates' magic penetration which is a great thing a lot of champions in the list below.

Work well




When Shield of Daybreak is activated, Leona's next basic attack will be a shield slam, dealing additional magic damage (60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220 (+ 40% AP)) and stunning the target for 1.25 seconds. When enemy's jungler comes to gank your lane, you really want to use Shield of Daybreak to stun him/her for a short duration in order to escape the gank. However, if you gank other lane with your AD Carry (Please make sure you have Mobility Boots), you really don't need to use Zenith Blade immediately. If you're close to the enemy you want, then use Shield of Daybreak first. If they run, use Zenith Blade to secure the kill. Another great feature of Shield of Daybreak is using it to take down a ward by yourself. If you're close enough to a ward that just has been put down, you can easily hit 1 basic attacks, use Shield of Daybreak immediately and then finish it with 1 more basic attack.

Full Stats



When Eclipse is activated, it create a shield that increases her armor and magic resist. After 3 seconds, the shield bursts and deals magic damage to nearby enemies. Imagine a rock that can move (Except Malphite), that's her. Eclipse can really do damage and protect her at the same time. Remember, always use Eclipse before using Zenith Blade or any other skill except Solar Flare.

Full Stats



Zenith Blade works like a stun, but it's not. It immobilizes the last enemy it struck as she travels. Perfect skill to initiate. Remember, try to aim for the enemy AD Carry. Zoning out enemy AD Carry is a good way to gain advantage for your teammates to take down the AP Carry and then move to enemy AD Carry. You can take a few hits from the enemy AD Carry, don't worry. Pratice your aim frequently with this skill.

Full Stats



Solar Flare has a great range, making Leona even more easier to initiate combat or even retreating situation. Solar Flare deals a great amount of magic damage, and if you pratice your aim, enemies within 100 range will be stunned 1.5 seconds instead of slowed. Try to aim for the AD Carry or AP Carry of enemy team. Solar Flare works really well with other champions that have a lot of Crowd Control Skills or AOE Skills. The list of champions work well with Solar Flare will be provided below.

Skill Sequence



To get a great set of skill we Leona, you absolutely want to consider leveling up skills correctly.

In this skill sequence, I really max out the ability of Leona against enemy long range and fast moving AD Carry champions such as : Caitlyn, Corki, Draven, Ezreal, Graves, Jinx, Lucian, Quinn, Tristana, Varus, and Vayne.

Early Game Skills (1-3)




Level up Shield of Daybreak first in order to take down enemy ward in the Forward Bush. This is a good way to keep Sweeping Lens and limit your enemy visions.


Zenith Blade depends on your AD Carry. If your AD Carry has a aggressive play style and eager to fight at level 2 or 3, you should level up this skill at level 2 incase he/she get to excited.


Eclipse will help you avoid being poked too hard and lose your health too fast. Like Zenith Blade, it depends on your AD Carry. It's a good choice to deal some damages to your enemies if your AD Carry is an aggressive player; otherwise, it gains you some extra protections.

Mid Game Skills (4-9)




At this point you should max out Eclipse and start getting tanky as Leona. As a initiator and support and the same time, you need to be able to protect your AD Carry and deal some damage as you go in combat using Zenith Blade.


As soon as you hit level 6, put 1 point to Solar Flare and start feed your AD Carry whenever Jungler comes to gank or has chances.

Late Game Skills (10-18)




Remember to max out Zenith Blade after you have maxed out Eclipse. Well, there are 2 options, you can either max out Zenith Blade or Shield of Daybreak. Maxing out Zenith Blade can help you deal with enemy AD Carry much easier but leave your AD Carry too vulnerable. In contrast, maxing out Shield of Daybreak can help you with assassin champions trying to attack your AD Carry like Kha'Zix, Akali, Evelynn, Fizz, Shaco, Talon, Master Yi and especially Katarina.

Finally, max out Shield of Daybreak to complete the skill set.

Combo



There are 2 basic combo when playing Leona :

Situation Combo


Use this combo whenever you are close to the target or you're sure 100% that you're gonna catch them. In this combo Zenith Blade is used for secured the kill don't use it radpidly, saving it for the other target if the first one is dead by Shield of Daybreak.

Basically, what this combo does is initiating the combat effectively. Remember, alwasy shield yourself up before going in combat phrase. As Leona, Eclipse is like her main skill.

Teammates and Opponents


Well, Leona works well with almost every champion in the game. She is really helpful with her lanemates and also with her teammates using her ability.



Leona Synergy


Ezreal works really well with Leona since her Solar Flare can stun and slow enemies, Ezreal can use his Trueshot Barrage more accuracy. Haven't mentioned that Ezreal has a good mobility and damage.


Draven has a huge damage with his Spinning Axe. When you're laning with Draven, using Zenith Blade right and you will pick up tons of kills. Now, why I mention Draven second? It's because his Stand Aside. Sometimes Stand Aside can make Leona miss her Solar Flare or Zenith Blade.


Since Graves deals a huge damage to enemies and his Collateral Damage works super effective with Leona, Graves is not a bad teammates with Leona. You can also help him push really fast using your Sunlight and Eclipse.


If you want to have a lot of Crowd Control Abilities then go with Varus. As soon as Leona and Varus hit level 6, they will dominate the game in no time. The problem with Varus is he requires a lot of support at early game, but Leona is kinda passive in early game.


Extremly useful at early game, Tristana and Leona can kill enemies at early game and then snowball till enemy team surrender. Tristana also has a lot of abilities to escape from combat, so you don't have to protect her fully. The problem with Tristana is if she feed at early game, it's hard for her to catch up enemy AD Carry.


Vayne is extremly dangerous to enemy team. Once you successfully land a stun on an enemy, she's gonna try to Condemn that enemy to the wall, creating a beautiful combo. The problem with Vayne is the same with Tristana


Leona Strong Against





Leona ain't gonna let Blitzcrank pull her into combat, she is going to it herself. As a tanky support, Leona has a big advantage against Blitzcrank in both tankiness and mobility.


Leona will beat the **** out of Sona until she talks. Like I said before Leona is very tanky as a support. So there is no way to poke her using a support champions like Sona. Furthermore, Sona has a pretty slow movement speed, makes her vulnerable to be engaged by Leona.


Almost the same with Blitzcrank, Thresh's Death Sentence is like Blitzcrank Mini Hook. As for Thresh, he needs Damnation in order to gain his Armor and Ability Power. As Leona, it's really easy to land Zenith Blade on him when he's trying to get soul.


Varus is super vulnerable when he is charging his Piercing Arrow, so as Leona, it's a good idea to land a combo on him as soon as he charge Piercing Arrow. Remember, when your teammate got hit by Chain of Corruption, try to move away from him/her and then quickly land Zenith Blade on Varus.


Leona Weak Against


Alistar has a lot of Crowd Control Abilities makes him extremly useful in team fight. Although Leona is a tanky support, it's really hard for Leona against Alistar. Whenever you lane Zenith Blade on Alistar, he can easily use his combo Pulverize to knock you up and then move forward and Headbutt you back.


Janna can a pain in the butt, with her fast movement speed, making Leona almost useless. Her Monsoon can really kick you out in team fight if she uses it right. She also has Zephyr to slow you down, and Eye of the Storm to shield her teammates, so Janna can be a tough enemy to deal with.


Morgana can be a threat to Leona since her Black Shield can make your Zenith Blade useless and Soul Shackles have a massive crowd controll effect on your teammates. She also can caged you in with her Dark Binding. Not a bad choice to deal with Leona.


Lulu is an expert in poking and harassing enemy. In contrast, Leona an passive tanky support. In other words, she's gonna abuse you as hard as she can since her basic damage deals both physical damage and magic damage (with Pix, Faerie Companion).

Gameplay


To master Leona you have to practice her a lot.



Early Game


At this point, you really want to stay passive and wait for the right opportunity. If the passive play style isn't suitable for you, you should try to zone your enemies by moving around and camping the brushes. At level 3, when you have all of your basic abilities, you can jump the enemy with your W-E-Q combo. You can either use your Sweeping Lens to destroy enemy river bush ward so that you can get the advantage for your Jungler. Play the right card and depend on your AD Carry Type (Aggressive or Passive). At level 6, you will become more dangerous, at this point you can play Leona more aggressive. As Leona, level 6, with good AD Carry, you can pretty take down enemy AD Carry with one combo. Remember to ward the Tri-Bush if you're on blue Team or the River Bush for safety. Try to control Dragon Zone by ward it as soon as dragon is up.

Mid Game


At this stage, if your bottom turret is gone, you should really help your AD Carry farm by using Eclipse on full-health caster minions so your AD Carry will get the farm much easier. If the enemy turret is gone, it's time for you to do some roaming and ganking. Helping other lane is a good way to win a match. At this stage, always remember to ward Dragon . Try to get more vision control on the map, and if you decide to invade their Ancient Golem (Blue) or Lizard Elder (Red), make sure you have vision control in that zone before you invade. I will show you how to ward properly in the next chapter.

Late Game


At this point, your team should play like a group already, if not, tell them to play like one. Try to roam with your team more frequently, at this point, team work is really important, and your mission is to group your team up and start roaming. In team fight, you should never chase the enemy that's absolutely gonna die. Use the time of chasing that enemy and move to the next target, with Leona you have to change target as quick as possible. To initiate a combat, all you need to do is using the basic combo I gave you. After successfully initiate a combat, your health will be low, so what you want to do it Flash out (You should Flash right after you have 1/2 health left) to lose aggro and then choose a vulnerable target to help your teammates get some kills. Remember to ward Baron and Dragon , it's extremly critical at this point.

Warding Techniques


Green - Lane-safety wards
Aqua - General map vision wards
Yellow - Dragon/Baron control wards
Red - Counter-jungle wards
Blue - Buff-defense wards
Pink - Late-game wards

Why would I want to ward?


The answer to this question is very easy: Warding wins games!
To know where the enemies are at any given moment is a very important matter throughout all stages of the game. Wards provide the additional map awareness to get that information constantly. Where is the jungler trying to gank? Where are the missing enemies heading to? Having or not having information about the whereabouts of your enemies makes a huge difference. It allows you to tell when to go back, when overextending isn't that risky, when you are getting counter-jungled, when you can gank, if buffs/dragon/baron are still there to name a few. Without wards, you would just play a guessing game which is not only inaccurate most of the time but also very risky for your sole goal in this game: Winning.
