This guide is for Leona in Classic 3v3 and 5v5.

Leona is a great tank. She got a lot of CC and can take a lot of damage.

Her Sunlight (Passive) works perfect with AD's because whenever you damage an enemy with a skill they will get a debuff, and if a teammate then strikes them, your team mate will get a buff that will give then extra damage for a short time.

Shield of Daybreak (Q): Is a stun, when you activate it, your next attack will do extra damage and will stun the target.

Eclipse (W): Is a Shield that decrease incoming damage. When it is activated it block damage and then after 3 seconds it will explode and damage all nearby enemy's. If you are attacked while it's active the duration of the shield will be extended with 3 seconds after the explotion.

Zenith Blade (E): Is a solar missile she shoots out and damaging enemy in the line. If it hits a champion, or multiple champions, she will dash to the last one and immobilize them.

Solar Flare (R): Is her ultimate. She calls down a beam witch is a little delayed but when it hits it will slow and stun enemy's. It have 2 circles when you select it, the smallest one stuns all enemy's inside. The large circle slows instead of stunning.

For runes I take a normal tank build. Not much in there.

For masteries I take a normal tank build.

for summoner spells I take Exhaust and Flash.
you could take Ghost instead of flash but I find flash more useful.

If you are playing in 3v3 Ranked and they don't got any AD you could go for CV instead of Exhaust.

for skill sequence I start out with Q to get a stun from the start, whenever I got a chance for stunning an enemy I do so. In lvl 2 I take E for grab and still each time they are positioned to your advantage use E for "charge" and stun them.
After lvl 2 I take W for shield, its really efficient and reduce incoming damage and have a good AOE damage to.
whenever you cant take W take you Stun (Q) for more often stuns and better damage.

Playing as Leona and harassing whenever you can, you want to charge in and stun them, take on your shield, either before you charge in or just after you stunned them.

For items I always start with a Doran's Shield for better lvl 1 fighting. It keeps you alive and is the only armor you have at start.

Other wise you could go for Regrowth Pendant and 1x Health Potion. Then you'll get your Philosopher's Stone faster, and get the gold per 5, earlier.

After that some movement speed by Boots of Speed, don't upgrade it yet.

Then go for your philosopher's stone for some Regan and then a Heart of God for extra health, and the gold per 5.

Then I build a Chain Vest, Negatron Cloak and Mercury's Thread. If they got a lot of CC, I go for the Mercury's Thread first. If I'm getting kicked by AD/AP in my lane I buy Respectively the Chain Vest or Negatron Cloak first and the other after.

After that I go for either Sunfire cape or just the Giant's Belt for extra health, otherwise I go for Kindlegem and Shurelya's Reverie

Then a Banshee's Veil and if the game run out go for Randuin's and Gardian Angel or Force of Nature.

Pros:
Great survivability
Great CC
Great Initiate
Great laning with a AD carry (because of passive)
Great Harass

Cons:
Not picked often in ranked (due to better choices)

At the laning phase Leona is a great at harassment and with a AD carry they are a really good team. Her passive do so the carry will do extra damage and with her stuns they are a great team.

At team fights you want to jump in and stun there carry and use your ultimate to extend the stun.

The bottom line is.
Leona do not excel specifically in one single area such as some champions do, for example Amumu with Curse of the Sad mummy
But she's a very good all-around tank who is decent in what she needs.
