Introduction

This is my guide: "Leona tanky support - purchase guide"

[UPDATE]: I'm still working on the masteries and runes! But other than that I hope you enjoy the guide and find it useful!

Hi! I'm Misana and this is my first "real" guide. I will try to explain my choices of masteries, items etc. All in all this is a guide on how to play Leona support.
I think Leona is a very strong support because she is naturally tanky and she provides a lot of cc. She can very easily give her ADC kills earlygame - if played right.

Pros / Cons

Pros:

  • Naturally tanky
  • She provides a lot of CC
  • AoE stun
  • Great harass in lane

Cons:

  • Low base health
  • No sustain in lane
  • She is very skill dependent (skillshots with her E and R)

Runes

Why?

There is not much to explain – but I use these runes on Leona because I think it is the most reasonable, you never go wtong with armor and MR. The armor is very important on Leona to make her the tanky support she is supposed to be.

Other options:

As mentioned in notes, you can also choose AP or Movement speed Quints. Ofc. you can also do the gold/10, but with the new gold income items, I don't find them as usefull. Then I'd rather work on her tankyness

Spells

Always get this! Flash can help with getting away, chasing down, stealing buffs etc.

I always get this because it can save a teammate/yourself or it can help you slow an enemy target.

You could get this to burst down or secure a kill.

With the new changes on Heal, it can save your teammate and/or yourself with the movement speed buff and heal ofc.

Items

or
If you go full support role then you should go for the Captain enchantment because of the extra movement speed for allied champions. You should go for Homeguard if you need to get back in lane fast – or if your base is under attack.

High crowd control and for the magic resistance.

Always get this as support!

Use this for armor if needed, also the cooldown reduction. The passive can be great for chasing or getting away.

talisman of ascension
The active speed boost!

The aura is great! Armor, health and cooldown reduction. The active is great in team fights.

This is a very good item vs AD/balanced teams and also for the health and armor. The active is useful in teamfights.

Again the health and armor – especially if you are against an AD/balanced team.

Get this mid/lategame to counter the enemy team and to reduce their map awareness.

This item removes all debuffs from a friendly champion and heals for 10% of their max health.

  • Leona's spells charge any enemy unit damaged with Sunlight for 3.5 seconds. When allied champions deal any damage to those targets they consume the Sunlight debuff to deal 20 / 35 / 50 / 65 / 80 / 95 / 110 / 125 / 140 additional magic damage. This additional damage is counted as the ally's damage and it will benefit from their magic penetration. Leona is unable to activate the additional damage herself.

  • ACTIVE: Leona's next basic attack will deal additional magic damage and stun the target for 1.25 seconds. MAGIC DAMAGE: 40 / 70 / 100 / 130 / 160 (+ 30% AP)

  • ACTIVE: Leona gains bonus armor and magic resistance for 3 seconds. When the effect ends she deals magic damage to enemies within 275 range of her. If Eclipse damages any enemies, the bonuses remain for an additional 3 seconds. ARMOR, MAGIC RESISTANCE: 30 / 40 / 50 / 60 / 70
    MAGIC DAMAGE: 60 / 110 / 160 / 210 / 260 (+ 40% AP)

  • ACTIVE: Leona projects a solar image of her sword, dealing magic damage to all enemies in a line. Leona will dash to the last enemy champion struck, briefly immobilizing it as she does. MAGIC DAMAGE: 60 / 100 / 140 / 180 / 220 (+ 40% AP)

  • ACTIVE: Leona calls down a beam of solar energy to a target location. After a brief delay, it deals magic damage to all enemies within 250 range and slows them by 80% for 1.5 seconds. Enemies within 100 range are stunned for 1.5 seconds instead of slowed.
For the duration, the beam also grants vision in a radius of 350. MAGIC DAMAGE: 150 / 250 / 350 (+ 80% AP)

Max your Eclipse first - mostly because of the bonus armor and magic resist. Always, before using your Zenith Blade, pop your Eclipse and then stun them with your Shield of Daybreak - very useful combo. You can also use your Shield of Daybreak to remove wards (if you don't have a pink) if your ADC is fast and get the first shot at it, quickly use your Shield of Daybreak. It's very effective if you get it right.

Warding

Your job as support is to ward as much as possible and of course the rights places, but I'm not gonna describe where and why - since there is already really great guides out there, that can explain it a lot better than I can.

Follow this link:
Where to ward

In game

Your job as a support is to protect your AD carry and to help him get as much farm as possible. To prevent ganks, you should definitely ward river and tribrush. Remember, your ADC might not have as much map awareness as yourself – that means it is your job to ping and protect your ADC the best you can. You can also choose to be the one calling out dragon or baron, if your lane is pushed and your jungler is near, you should definitely try and go for dragon. Remember to call out mia’s and dragon/baron timer.
When in lane – hide in brush and wait for the opportunity to Zenith Blade the enemy ADC or support. Make sure the tribrush and river is warded before doing this, or else you could be looking at a possible 3v2.
When you reach mid game you should really focus on warding! Dragon, Baron, river, enemy jungle, etc. Go for an Oracle's Lens to gain more map control. Also, stay with your team – you never know when the enemy team initiates a team fight.
All in all, be the best support you can, protect your team, ward as much as possible, win team fights and push to win!

Conclusion

Hi there. I hope you enjoyed the guide! Please comment if you have any advice/changes/props etc. It would really mean alot to me - and please, if you choose to downvote please comment on why you did it and what i could make better in my guide to prevent it from happening. (This guide is still a bit under construction to try and make it better and better)
Good day!
