Not Updated For Current Season
The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
Hey all. This is my first build ever, so some constrictive feedback in the comments would be nice. Kog'Maw is a very versatile champion, and can be played succesfully as and AD/AS caster, but not really that much as a hybrid or AP caster. I focus on AS with Stark's Fervor and Madreds, with some Life Steal with The Bloodthirster and again Starl's Fervor.
Ghost: Your Champion ignores unit collision and moves 35% faster for 15.5 seconds.
Exhaust: Blinds the target( 100% miss chance on auto attack) and slows it's movement speed by 40% for 3 seconds.
Kog'Maw has no real escape mechanisms of his own, other than Void Ooze, which has a pretty long cooldown and is a skill shot so you would have to interrupt your movement, turn around, aim it, and have the enemy still be within the slow zone. With this in mind, I would personally choose Ghost and Exhaust. These two skills serve a dual perpose. They can help you get away from an enemy Champion if you get caught in an unwanted position, but also get you towards a champion that is running away. Ghost increases your movement speed, which is crucial for running away, but also helps you get towards an enemy faster. Exhaust functions the same way in that it allows you to escape an enemy champion. Exhaust also causes the target to miss 100% of the time on it's auto attacks! This skill is killer against AD/AS Champions including, Kog'Maw, Twitch, Teemo, Master Yi(though the slow will not affect him if he has his ultimate active), and many others.
Secondary Summoner Spells
Clarity: Restores 160 + (30*Champion level) and 50% of that to nearby allies
Clarity is a good summoner skill that I use at times. It helps a lot in the early game, as while everyone else has gone back for mana, you and your lane partner can stay, as you replenish your mana back. You shouldn't be running into any mana problems after you get your Tear of the Goddess though, so this skill becomes almost useless after that point.
Cleanse: Removes all stuns, slows, taunts, fears, snares, sleeps, silences, blinds, and immobilizers and lowers the duration of new ones applid to your champion for 3 seconds.
Cleanse is a great skill that helps you in escaping. I personally though cannot find a time to use it, as if I have been stunned, slowed, or blinded, I am usually ganked by two or three of the enemy team. It serves a great purpose in the early game, but like clarity, loses some of it's greatness once you get past that stage in the game.
Flash: Teleports your Champion to your cursor's location
Flash has saved me quite a bit while playing Kog'Maw. If there were a third spell that I could take, it would be this. My main issue with it, is that it has a very limited range, it has an extremely long cooldown, and once you use it once, they know that you have it, and will anticipate the use of it when they gank you. There just wasn't enough room for this summoner spell in my build.
I use a standard 21/0/9 build. It is all around good for Kog' and the extra damage helps a lot.
Marks: Mark of DesolationMark of Desolation*9
Seals: Greater Seal of Alacrity*9
Glyphs: Greater Glyph of KnowledgeGreater Glyph of Knowledge*9
Quints: Greater Quintessence of Alacrity*3
I try to get as much AS as possible, while keeping mana in mind, along with some Attack Penetration, as that is the main thing you'll want.
Icathian Surprise - Upon dying, Kog'Maw starts a chain reaction in his body which causes him to move faster and detonate after 4 seconds; dealing 100 + (25 x lvl) true damage to surrounding enemies.
This is a decent passive. A lot of people have not played against Kog, so they have a dissadvantage of not knowing what his passive is. This deals, at level 18, 550 damage, which is better than most passives. However it comes with a simple downside. You need to die for the passive to activate. If your in a team battle and get sucked into the fray, this passive can get you an assist or two, possible even a kill, as no one notices a dying Kog about to explode while they are whaling on each other. If however you decide to die from a tower, minion, a champion that you cannot catch up to, or Karthus' ultimate, then you should just run into a mob of enemy minions for some easy (although bittersweet) gold.
Caustic Spittle - Passive: Increases Attack Speed by a %. Active: Kog'Maw launches a corrosive projectile which deals magic damage corrodes the target's armor for 4 seconds.
Passive: Increases Attack Speed by 10/15/20/25/30%.
Active: Kog'Maw launches a corrosive projectile which deals 60/110/160/210/260 (+0.7) magic damage and reduces the target's armor by 5/10/15/20/25.
This is a decent skill, with it's best function coming as a late game passive that increases attack speed. If you find yourself ganked by a Champion with higher armor, such as Rammus or Shen, then this can be a life saver as it reduces the armor of the Champion it is fired at. If the enemy team has Champions with higher armor, I usually get this skill at around levels 5-8.
Bio-Arcane Barrage - Kog'Maw's attacks gain range and deal a percent of the target's maximum health as magic damage.
Kog'Maw's attacks gain 130/160/190/220/250 range and deal an additional 2/3/4/5/6% (+0.01)% of the target's maximum Health as Magic Damage (Max: 100 Damage vs Monsters). Lasts 6 seconds.
This is Kog'Maw's killer skill. It increases the attack damage of each auto attack by a certain percentage of the targets health. This skill destroys against tanks! If your facing a high HP Champion, again like Rammus or Shen, then this will melt away at their health like ice cream melts on a hot summer day in the desert.
Void Ooze - Kog'Maw launches a peculiar ooze which damages all enemies it passes through and leaves a trail which slows enemies who stand on it.
Kog'Maw launches ooze which deals 60/110/160/210/260 (+0.7) magic damage to enemies it passes through.
Additionally, it leaves a trail which slows enemies by 28/36/44/52/60% for 4 seconds.
This is your main ability. It helps you farm, gank, and in general stay away from trouble. This ability has one of the best "slow" functions in the game, and it has some damage to it as well. Use this to harass an enemy in a lane, or possibly get them full in the blast, and then follow up with your ult, then w, and hammer them till they either leave or die. You are sure to take a large chunk of their health with that combo. This skill can help you run away, keep an enemy in range, or slow an enemy to set up for a gank. I believe it is one of the best all-around skills in the game at the moment.
Living Artillery - Kog'Maw fires a living artillery shell at a great distance dealing damage and revealing targets. Additionally, multiple Living Artilleries in a short period of time cause them to cost additional mana.
Kog'Maw fires artillery from a great distance. After a short delay, the artillery falls dealing 80/120/160 (+0.3) magic damage and reveals targets for 4 seconds (deals 150% bonus damage to Champions).
Each subsequent Living Artillery in the next 6 seconds costs 40/40/40 additional mana (Max 200).
This, in my opinion, is the best champion finisher in the game! At a low cost of 40 mana, providing you haven't fired it in the last 6 seconds, it deals around 300 damage to Champions, and 200 damage to creeps. Combine that with a range of 1200, and you can stay out of combat and harass extremely easy with this skill. Champions with low magic resist, or just squishies, will be absolutely devastated by a few of these airdrops.
Let's face it. Kog'Maw is very fragile. He can however have an enourmous attack speed, at a max of 2.5 shots a second. This simple fact brought me to the idea that Life Steal would be a great fit for Kog.
Kog' can lane middle, but I would advise against it. Kog'Maw excells at top or bottom lane. You want to get Void Ooze as your first skill. Try laning with Champions that have long range, such as Veigar, very high attack speed, such as Twitch, or that slow, such as Morgana. These three types of Champs play very well with Kog, as when the enemy comes to attack your ally and you, you can either bombard them from a distance, hit them extremely hard in a matter of seconds, or stun/slow them and auto attack till they die. If you happen to face a team that has quite a few Champions with high armor, you might want to get 1 level of Caustic Spittle in order to help control them.
Once you hit the laning phase, you should always be with someone on your team. Check bushes for enemies with your ultimate, as it only costs 40 mana, and you could get an easy kill off of it. By now you should be just about starting your Madred's BLoodrazer or your Bloodthirster, and you should be powerful enough to take on a dragon. Kill it, but keep an eye on your minimap. I have been killed countless times because I was farming the dragon, someone came from the bottom lane and ganked me before I even got a ping off. Get the Lizard and Golem buffs, as they increase Kog's damage output almost 2 fold! At this stage Kog' should be able to take down a tower fairly quickly so help push towers if your team does that
By now you should be well on your way to completing Manamune, if not finished. Team battles have started and most of the towers should be gone. Watch out for Champions hiding in the forest. In team battles Start off with the E skill, followed by R, then W, and if they get too close, Q. Rinse and Repeat until they are all dead. You should not die too often, becuase of your Life Steal and Massive Attack Speed. Remember to stay with an allied champion at all times, because Kog' can easily be killed by a quick 1-3 person gank.
Finally the paragraph you have been waiting for, The Item Build!
Item Build Order
Start the game out with a Meki Pendant, and two health pots.
These should keep you from going back too early, as they provide the both health and mana regen that you need to stay in the lane.
After 5 or 6 minutes you should have enough money to go and buy this. This is an all around good item. It has a low cost, so you can start getting bigger items faster, it gives you life steal, which helps you stay in your lane longer, and it is a jumping stone onto an even better item, Stark's fervor.
Next up is mana. First turn your Meki Pendant into a Tear of the Goddess.
This item helps immensly. I previously used Bilgewater Cutlass, which works fine, but I figured out that Stark's Fervor works way better. It gives you more attack speed which helps a lot, more life steal, which keeps you in your lane, and it gives health regen. It also has a debuff for you enemies that get too close, and a buff for your allies. What's not to like?
After you complete that item, it's time to get some speed. Start by buying a Boots of Speed, or if you have enough money, buy Berserkers Greaves right away. This gives you more movement speed, and an increase in attack speed right away.
By now it should be mid game.
Follow up with a Madreds Bloodrazor for easier Champion killing with your auto attacks.
Now, you'll want to start a Bloodthirster. This increases your Life Steal, and gives some Attack Damage. You will be almost unstoppable with this item build, as you will be regenerating life and at a crazy rate.
By now it should be late game
Procede to turn that Tear of the Goddess into a Manamune. That's all the mana we need, cause we should only be casting our spells once in a team fight or a gank, but we have enough mana to go through 4 or 5 spell casts of all our spells if we need it.
,Follow up with a Guinsoo's Rageblade which increases Attack Speed, Ability Power, and Attack Damage.
Alternatively you could take a Black Cleaver if you want to deal even more damage. It's armor penetration helps a lot, so take this if the other team is tank heavy.
Kog'Maw, as I stated before, can be played very successfully as an AS/AD or AP Champion. This is an AS/AD build with some Life Steal. I believe that this is a viable way to play him, and this suites my style of play for Kog'. If you do not like this build for Kog' however, you should check out: Kog'maw; because Cho'Gath couldn't feast fast enough Guide by Zuulkra, or Splatter Kog'Maw guide by Hell_Pet. Both I have personally used, and they are great bases to work off of for Kog'Maw.
Here are a few games that I just recently using this build played:
Please feel free to post your comments, questions, or concerns about my build in the section below. I don't care about +1 or not, and a -1 with no comment doesnt help me. I just care about providing the community the way that I personally play Kog'Maw, The Mouth of the Void.
