Greater Marks of Magic Penetration are really the only logical Mark to get for such a dominating AP champion, but we will supplement these with a large array of additional Magic Penetration items.
Greater Seals of Armor are to help early game against minions, junglers, and autoattacks.
Greater Glyph of Magic Resist are for early game laning against your AP counterpart.
Greater Quintessence of Ability Power are for early pushing, harassment, and ganking power.
is important in order to complete your initiation or to aid escape with Glacial Path.
is a beautiful spell for either initiation or escape.
In my opinion, it is highly debatable whether these two spells should ever be exchanged on Lissandra.
Putting the full 21 points into AP Offense is no surprise.
If Lissandra can survive decently into midgame, the 9 points of Utility will serve her extremely well. With an Athene's Unholy Grail or other %-based Mana Regeneration items, Maximum Mana doubles as Mana Regen. Maximizing her Mana Regeneration helps her throw those numerous Ice Shard that makes her so dangerous.
The remaining points are invested in Flash and Cleanse CDR.
Ice Shard is the primary weapon in your arsenal. It deals high damage with a few items and also applies your slow to the first target hit, but its main use is as pure AOE damage. It's a skillshot that is best Smart Casted.
Ring of Frost is maximized second in order to deter ganks and help initations. It's your primary spell for reducing cooldown on your passive as well. Clear waves with this spell in order to get free mana harasses on your lane opponent.
Complete Glacial Path last. Ring of Frost is useful without it, and it takes 5 levels to get to a 10 recast time which becomes spammable at 24%-40% CDR. Still, Glacial Path is a fantastic spell that will keep opponents guessing while lending you more mobility than is decent for a traditional AP carry. It's simply not as important for CC and thus does not activate your passive for that better mana efficiency.
Lissandra is absolutely meant to dive the other team in a hellish initiation of invulnerable ice with Frozen Tomb, and every item we will pick will be geared toward that goal.
Magic Penetration is going to hurt badly early on in the game, so you get it first, followed by your go-to mana fount in Chalice of Harmony.
Next comes the crucial Zhonya's Hourglass, which allows you to survive after your initiation. In effect, it will give Lissandra 4 seconds of invulnerability along with your ultimate. Every statistic on the Hourglass is synergistic with Lissandra's ability set.
Since you're in the middle of the enemy team, you're spreading even more Magic Penetration around with the excellent Abyssal Scepter. Most ranged champions will be taking True Damage at this stage!
To finish, the Liandry's Torment will burn the enemy team in a hellish CC-DoT-AoE even after they have stacked HP and MR items. It has an extremely efficient gold-to-power ratio in late game once enemies have many more HPs. Once you have this item, it can singlehandedly guarantee teamfight victories if you can manage to hit some valuable targets with your Glacial Path - Frozen Tomb - Ice Shard - Ring of Frost combination.
Completing your Athene's Unholy Grail will allow you to dive with your combination more often and if you assemble your Rabadon's Deathcap, it means you can probably 1v5 the enemy team and you have won your game, congratulations!
