Not Updated For Current Season
The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
People think that Lux should be played as a support, because it says so on the champion page in LoL. However, Lux can be a great carry mage!!! She can hold solo lanes no problem at all, and her spells are very good. This guide should allow you to get your maximum damage output as well as help you stay alive and help your teammates out a lot.
For the runes, just like most casters, I used magic penetration reds, mana regen per level yellows, and AP per level blues. If you wish, you may switch the AP blues for Cooldown reduction blues. For the Quints, for early game help and survival, I have used the flat health quints, but you can also go with flat AP or AP per level quints.
Masteries are generally like most casters, but since summoner spells are Teleport and clarity, I have taken the mastery points for the teleport and clarity as well. The monster buffs are really good on Lux, so it is good to have the additional 30% duration.
Start off with a Doran's Ring. After laning and once you have about 1500 gold, recall back to buy boots of speed and a Mejai's Soulstealer. Since Lux is a very long ranged mage, it is not necessary to get the extra speed from the Sorcerer's Shoes or Ionian boots. You will have a 15% cdr from Mejai's stack shortly afterwards anyways, and addition to that, you should always try to go for blue buffs, as it gives great mana regen and cdr needed. Also, the additional 20 magic penetration helps with more damage output. Once you have your Mejai's, start building towards the Rabadon's Deathcap, as it works greatly with the Mejai's stacks. Now its the time to get your final boots. I highly recommend Sorcerer's shoes over Ionian boots, because even though Lux's ult is known for having short cooldown, the extra cdr is not necessary. After boots, go for a Lich Bane, as it gives a little bit of magic resist, lots of AP, and movement speed. Also, the passive of Lich Bane goes great with Lux's illumination passive. That is the end of the core item build!!! Now, depending on the enemy team, you will choose your next items. If the enemy is building high magic resist, get the Void Staff, as it gives you 70AP as well as great magic penetration. If the enemy dps are targeting you down, get a Zhonya's Hourglass, as it gives high armour and high AP, and comes with a great Unique Active, which can save your life at many many times. Now, usually, you do not need any defensive items as Lux, since she is a very long ranged champion, who can stay out of enemy's range and do tons of damage. However, if there are champions like Karthus, or Evelyn who could sneak up on you, or hit you from where ever, you can get a Banshee's Veil to counter it. Once you are done your build, pop an elixir to increase your AP even further.
All of Lux's spells are skill shots, meaning that it requires manual aiming instead of a locked in spell. It takes a little bit of time to master all of Lux's spells and how to use them best in each situations. With Lux's passive, if you can, you want to auto attack the enemy in between each of your skill shots for extra damage.
Max out your Lucent Singularity first, because it is a great spell in many different ways. Firstly, it is great for lane controlling, such as keeping your enemy far away from minions, or killing multiple minions at once. It can also be used to check bushes for incoming ganks. Since light binding has a 2 second snare even in Level 1, leave light binding at level 1 until the end.
