I think the melee champions have above average magic resist as a matter of necessity. It usually takes them a little longer to get in range and so survivability on them is very important, therefore riot makes sure you aren't handicapped in your builds by needing to include too many magic resist items.

As far as non melee guys dropping your magic resist down, magic penetration only reduces it for the user. So if Ryze had a sorcerer's boots only he would get a bonus. Bonuses like fiddlesticks passive, and that of abyssal sceptre (which is a unique aura and can only be applied once), increase the benefit for your whole team. So in short yes for magic reduction which has limited sources.

Good guide, showed me how important the first bit of MR is.
Basically all the melee champs have above average MR as the average is being dragged down by the larger number of non melee?

Thank you very much Mastajdog. I knew the silly stuff category didn't work like that and I had assumed negatives worked the way you said, but I wasn't sure. I also made sure I moved the note on armour to a more prominent spot so it would be seen easier.

While Sorcerer's shoes do a lot early a simple pair of mercury treads, null mantle, or negatron cloak really remove most of the benefits, and help protect you a lot. One of my favourite starts against a good caster mid is abyssal sceptre mercury treads. You increase your damage by a lot and reduce theirs by a ton. If your opponent isn't watching what you're buying it should be an advantage you can capitalize on early.

just one thing: mr below 0 is calculated the same way mr is above 0. the difference being it's increased damage. so, if you are at -50 mr and i deal 1 skill of 100 magic damage to you, you are currently taking (50/150) INCREASED magic damage, aka 33%. so my 1 skill would deal 133 magic damage. if it was a skill for 500 magic damage, it would be 665. sorry to dissapoint you. still, a good guide and very helpful. and yes, soc's shoes are incredible early game and throught, as mr is flat except for mr/level glyphs and items

Good stuff. I never really realised how much those sorcerer's shoes do for you early on

So does reduction come before magic penetration? My understanding was that it went, penetration reduction, then %. If not a lot of my numbers in the negative numbers just doesn't work.

Thank you for your comments though. I appreciate them.

You are correct, thanks for the catch. =P

Yes, flat Mpen comes before %Mpen.

Side Note:
Something to note is that Mpen itself will never be able to give bonus damage. The order that it calculates reduction/penetration is as follows:
    % Reduction: (
holy ferver)
Reduction: ( A Harmless Scarecrow, Cursed Touch, Abyssal Mask, and Malady)
% Penetration ( Archaic Knowledge , Void Staff)
Penetration ( Sorcerer's Shoes, Haunting Guise, Mark of Magic Penetration)

That's wrong. % Penetration is calculated last, that's why Void Staff and Last Whisper don't work well with lots of flat pen.

Theoretically speaking a Soraka with full stacks on Starcall can reduce your MR by 180.

Kogmaw can do it to 85, Amu 95.

And Trundle can reduce their MR by 90% with a VS + Ult.

Tons of other stuff if you want to know.
