Purpose of Malzahar is....???

Welcome. You may be wondering why you are here. LET ME TELL YOU. Secretly, you've HAD it with assassins... or tanks. EITHER WAY, welcome. Let me explain what Malzahar is awesome at and what Malzahar isn't awesome at.


1) Anti-assassination. Janna may be the QUEEN of disengaging but Malzahar is the KING of punishing assassins. Stay out of sight and keep your ADC/carries in range of your spells. Once someone swings in, ENJOY BLASTING THEM APART. Your ADC will thank you, your team will thank you, and if the assassin gets QSS just realize your catastrophic earth shattering damage ratios will probably still kill them.


2) Anti-Tank. This takes the explosive power away from Malzahar but let me give you what happens (if your team DOESN'T ENGAGE AND LETS YOU WITTLE THEM DOWN):

Team tank-a-gnar-malphite-is sitting with their team sieging your tower. You, running Liandrys, DFT, & Rylais, drop a Q, W, bounce e to them, because they can't push up to tower with you there. These spells WILL touch some of them repeatedly. Their HP WILL DROP LIKE CRRRRRRRRRAZY. Null zone is % max life. Liandrys is 4% with that slow. DO IT. They will then be low enough for your team to realize "holy **** we can blow up a tank with only 1/3 HP left" and proceed to wreck face. However, this tends to be hard to do because people will want to engage either side of the fence. If they towerdive just make sure to silence those who will give the most problems and ult someone who has particularly high damage (if they are in range).



IN GENERAL: You want to be perpendicular to your team. That means off to the side of your team so that your Q will land across multiple enemies if they run in at a straight line. Master placement of that and you will save many-a-attempted ganks. This will also force them to either split to chase you (allows your team to engage in the awkward positioning) or allow to you rain hell down upon their team. You are NOT front line and you are NOT the engage. The only time you will engage is if you have someone out of position (hello Vayne) or have the RAW POWER (Void, Liandry, Deathcap, etc.) to down a tank outright by yourself---that would be ultra late game and still not advisable unless their team is too far away to counteract you.

Malzahar punishes those who aren't aware of his position or his suppression.


You will laugh every time an enemy comes to lane with cleanse. THEY HAVE NO IDEA.

LANING

So before you do anything, spam Q a couple times. Get your voidling ready to SPAWN. Use Q to harass or wait for the 3 front minions to get low and get that CS. Preferable to just auto one down to get last hits.

Once you get level 3 (READ: RANK 2 OF MALEFIC VISIONS) you now have pushing and punishing power. Someone up in your face? Launch off Q, get voidling, wait for it to get big and then get them to attempt to harass you. Drop E on their face (AND AUTO AS WELL) and watch their HP drop. If they don't realize wtf is happening feel free to continue autoing until they die. This won't happen much beyond low silver though. :)

Make sure to ward. You have no escapes. You have nada. Though if jungler is coming through top feel free to just head towards river and go the long route.


What's awesome is you can SHOVE LANE FROM A MILE AWAY. Do it. Most people can't CS under tower very well. Just stay in range enough to let voidling hit targets with E.

PROTRICKSWHAT

How to bounce E (malefic visions) step 1:
Get minion waves low with Q or autos. Drop E on some. Drop another Q across them all at once to cause it to hop over to unsuspecting foe. Do this as a "last hit" for very low single minions next to champs. Enjoy tons of free harass and awesomeness.

HALP IM GETTIN GANKED:

Run to nearest bush. Wait for perfect opportunity (as they walk in or they will both get hit by Q). Blast them with said Q (call of the void). Drop W. Drop E on intended ult target. Ult said target. Watch that person die WHILE YOUR 2.5 SECOND SILENCE MAKES THE OTHER GUY PISSY AS HELL. Depending on who the second person is, use summoned voidling(s) and E to beat the **** out of them. If you run ignite, do it, auto, kite, then take the double kill for roflwtfhax moments.

HALP THEY GOT DAT QSS:

You will have to bait out their QSS. Drop a fast QWE and if it lands they may think they are suppressed (silence makes them unable to cast) and drop QSS. If they do, R. If they do not. Save it until it pops (either from teammates snares, or your silence...etc)

They will feel incredibly stupid for getting tricked by SILENCE. HA! :v

Pros / Cons

PROS:
- High base AND AP scaling
- Anti-assassination
- Build tends to be beefier
- % health late game monster vs bruisers/tanks
- VOIDLINGS! (Often underestimated--tends to be factor in winning lane)

CONS
- No escapes
- QSS renders ult CC worthless and lowers its damage (It's MR)
- Slow as icicles
- Long cooldowns
- HIGH mana costs
