Not Updated For Current Season
The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
For runes I went with magic pen marks, cdr glyphs, and mana regen seals. I went with mana quintences because it helps give you a little more damage at the end of the game. These aren't exactly set in stone, as long as you get a solid 5% cdr from runes then the rest is personal preference. This is just what I use. The reason is that Ryze is a nuke toon. His attack rotation can do some major damage and harrass extremely well as low as level 2 being able to combine an overload with spell flux and another overload. This cdr helps get that 2nd overload off hopefully while the enemy is running away.
Again I went with mana regeneration and cooldown reduction. It's up to you on how you spend your points but there's not much wiggle room if you want the max cdr and mana regen.
Ok so the skill sequence. Why go for overload first? It has the shortest cd and you'll be using this spell more than anything else. Another question is why wait till 4 to get rune prison so you can start to spam that awesome combo? Well, it's my personal preference to harass with overload. Overload's range is a little longer than RP, thus I use it more to hit enemies with. Usually the harassment sessions only last long enough to get 2 spells off at max range, and because RP's range is shorter, this isn't one of the spells you will cast to initiate or defend against that harassment attempt. Usually I will place my Ryze with some wiggle room behind some ranged minions and take pop-shots at minions, while auto-attacking, I'll go ahead and have my Q pressed and trained on the baddy, this way I can hit them literally as soon as they are in range, again while they use their ability, and hopefully I can hit them with a final overload as they run out of range. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but if you can only get the overload and the SF then it's still probably more than what they hit you with. Having that extra point in overload gives you more damage early on so that those level 2 and 3 harassment pop-shots hurt the bad guys more.
Next question you might be asking is why don't we spell flux until end game? Well the simple fact is that spell flux doesn't really do much damage. It's good for clearing minions when combined with ulti but ultimately it's a cooldown saver. Launch overload, launch flux, and it's basically like a Q-E-Q really quick, it's basically hitting them with 2 really fast overloads. You should be able to quickly cast Q-E-Q-W-Q (and if they're still standing) R-Q-E-Q-W-Q before you will have to start all over with Q-E-Q-W-Q. This combination will pretty much destroy anyone even if they have MR.
The only change to this is if they have a Banshee's Veil. If you see this, then hit them with E first, to remove the bubble, then nuke away with Q, cc with W and Q again.
This is obviously my first guide and I'm curious to see if anyone thinks it's any good. If so then I'll elaborate in more detail on certain things and make a more valiant attempt at fulfilling this guide. Thanks
