I use this runes for all of my tank .It allowe me to stay on the line a really long time .
At the beginning of the game people against me can't deal many damage cause of this runes .
and my hp quintessence can be very important for end game .

I put 6 point in utility cause maokai use too mutch mp .And the 24 over in defense to reduce domage deal by champions and minions .

Maokai need to be first on his line for use sappling toss and make al the ennemy rage so i always begin the game with boots, maokai use so many mp so i often need to use mana potion despite of clarity .
After we need to protect maokai life so we need 2 items thommail and force of nature you can by force before thommail if ap deals more damage than ad . our life is protect so now we have to increase our life so a warmog is the best choice . Now you can tank you you just have to choise the 2 last items i prefer this for increase mp and hp .

You must begin with sapling toss for make the ennemy rage at the beginning after the twisted ... allowe use to be sure that your sappling deal all possible dommage it can
arcane smash allowe to keep friend alive or use it all the time for the maokai passive .

Maokai ulti is very interressant for team fight cause it reduce all damage deals by ennemis.

for help your partner you need to block ennemy to make them go slawly to cover when they are back be a tank mean that if you can sacrifice yourself for save a partner you must do this for the first time try to help your partner all the time after you must know if you can or not save them .
be a tank meant help partner to do kill so if you can you have to let your dps make the kill make few kill for earn money but your score have to be like 5 10 40 not 40 10 5
this is how i play all my tank thi is why my partner like my tank ^^

To sum up ,maokai is a very amazing tank .
maokai skills allowe him to save partner life and block ennemys
just one cons: he use so mutch mana at the beginning of a party it can be a great probleme
