Master Yi 101

Hello everyone, I'm Mivvv... This is my guide for Master Yi
This is my first guide, still I think I made a very general and a usefull guide.

So have fun while reading and comment please (without harassing)

Master Yi is an assasin, which can go for both AD and AP... Depending on
how you play and how you like you can build him up. May be
a very agressive assasin or a one man army with nuke and built in invincibility...
How you play is the key here.

I'm not going to explain this very much because these are standart masteries for AD carry. Only change on mine is Summoner's Wrath . Why I didn't choose this? Because early game that 5 AD/AP will become very handy, but it will only be for that. Instead I put that 1 point into defense, because you will need any defense you can get!

Another standart AP masteries. Since AP Yi is only mana hungry at early game, I put 2 points on Meditation , since you'll be playing mid lane Wanderer can be usefull since you don't have teleport to go to your lane ASAP. Yi doesn't need any more utility, so put rest into Durability

Why these runes? Simple. Since Yi is very squishy it needs every leverage it can use. Armor & Scaling MR runes are essential part of defensive runes. (Why scaling? since AP champions don't deal high damage early, it becomes handy at late game IMO)

Now you may say dude wtf? I find these runes essential for AP Yi and don't be scared from the numerous runes they have very simple reasonings behind.
  • Glyph's are for increase of AP for early game and a little boost for late game.
  • Seal's are for defensive measures to remove squishyness get health & to take less damage from ADC or AD Jungle get armor.
  • Mark's are for utility. I find these as utiliy, one gives you Magic Pen. The other gives you a little health boost.
  • Quintessence's are the main reason you have rune pages. A very generous AP for start and a nice health to make you less squishy!

Summoner Spells (For Both)

Summoner Spells


Flash is commonly used spell for quick getaways and chases so why not? You are very squishy, your only escape mechanism is your ulti. This will come very handy on battlefield.

Ignite is a very usefull spell, reducing healing and dealing damage for 5 seconds... A nice way to finish your low healthed and running away enemy.



Other Useful Spells



These are also an option; but I really don't use them a lot...
  • Exhaust Usefull for enemy AD champs or helps you to slow down running away enemies. I prefer
  • Cleanse Makes Master Yi very strong in combat and unstoppable, but can be covered with Quicksilver Sash
  • Smite Only usefull if you are planning to jungle.
  • Ghost seriously? Yi is one of the fastest champions and you want ghost? That means
    that Highlander is no use for you and you should stop playing Master Yi

Intro for AD Master Yi

Damage, Attack Speed, Life Steal

This is the main goal of AD Master Yi. You have only 2 useful skill and since you are an assasin, you have low health. Now your farming skill will determine your fate! Because you are that item dependant! Still you will deal very good damage and with life steal combined with your attack speed, enemies will be your walking med-kits in battle!

Abilities (For AD)

Abilities

Double Strike

A boost for your auto attacks.
Might not look very fancy, still this passive saved many lives on 1v1 DPS duels. Speed is vital.





Alpha Strike

This is your main farming ability, also when maxed your first damage dealer before getting into a battle. This ability is perfect for an assasin because
  • You are untargetable/unhitable for about 1 second.
  • Hitting multiple targets
  • Teleporting to your target (gap closer, chase finisher)
  • Can also be used to escape
  • Low cooldown time (gets better as you level up)
Also you can harass enemy champion on your lane if he is close to minions, just aim at a minion and hope that alpha strike will hit him. Plus hitting multiple targets is your best friend to farm Yi.

Meditate

It is not a skill you would like to have; since it depends on AP. Still there are a few uses like healing plus; getting armor & magic resistance which is usefull against Requiem or dealing with effect of Toxic Shot





Wuju Style

Your first AD improvement! Passively increases your damage and when active you deal two times more of that increase for 10 seconds. I find this quite usefull at early game to get the first blood. For mid and end game you will instinctively use this skill when attacking an enemy champion or turret because of its 70 AD boost.





Highlander

You depend on this skill! It is as necesarry as breathing for Master Yi. Because it gives movement speed and attack speed; since you are building AD that DPS will be quite usefull.
Also very usefull at escaping ganks, chasing enemies, fastest tower destruction just name it. It has a very low cooldown and when combined with Wuju Style it is purely lethal! When you kill an enemy champion all your cooldowns are reseted to 0, so if you are sure about getting a kill use all your abilities!

I don't think this needs some explaining but, Wuju Style is your top priority as an AD, level it and get your AD bonus. Second priority is Alpha Strike, which is essential for farming. Meditate is at the bottom of the list. Why? because it highly depends on AP, which we don't have. Still, if you need lane sustain, take it at level 3.

space Attack Order for Yi is very simple. It is like playing chess. Make your opening with Alpha Strike, just before you land use Wuju Style. Become king of the square by activating Highlander. Your enemy will go defensive, but it would be unpolite to let an enemy escape. If you think you can get a kill, use Alpha once more and repeat.

Classic Build



Why this is used?
Simple. You kill the batman! But seriously, this is a classical DPS AD Carry build. I won't explain first 4 items since they are core of every carry. Why The Black Cleaver? Because of health, CD reduction & damage. Because of health & CD reduction I pick this instead of Last Whisper. If you have noticed, there are only 5 items. 6th is situational. Low on health? get a Frozen Mallet, another carry get a Thornmail. I trust you on that. But mostly people choose the last one Guardian Angel.

Intro For AP Master Yi

R -> Use Item -> Q -> Kill -> Repeat

Simple as that, this is all about AP Master Yi. Your Q is a pure damage dealer, your W is a built in Zhonya's Hourglass and best of all your ultimate refreshes your abilites. After you learn everything, your team will be pleased from that they have a massive damage dealing damage absorbing assasin. Very awkward definition for an assasin; but thats what riot created.

Abilities (For AP)

Double Strike

A boost for your auto attacks.
For AP, it goes well with Spellsword . Even that little damage counts.





Alpha Strike

Learn this skill well; because this is your:
  • Main Damage Output
  • Nuke
  • Farming Skill
  • Harassing Skill
Why so important?
As an AP Carry, you only rely on your abilities and the downside of Yi is that you only have one skill to deal some damage! But it covers with a damage "300 + %100 of Ability Power". Using this unassisted is something you will do at early game, but in mid/late game... Combine all the AP item set and Highlander. Once you get a kill, spam your Q on weakest. Chain kills = PENTAKILL

Meditate

This will keep you laning like Garen. After the patch 3.01 AP ratio on Meditate has been decreased to 2.0 from 4.0, which Yi more vulnerable. This will prevent you diving in 1v5 battles, but it shouldn't be a problem in rest of the game. My advice from now on don't rely on your meditate you are no longer invincible after this patch. Except being interrupted by some hard CC, this skill will give you a good protection for 5 seconds. Like Zhonya's Hourglass with a doubled time. With that 5 second bonus, it will refresh your Alpha Strike and you will get more kills. Also you can pull some enemy champions to a trap!





Wuju Style

Definately, not for AP Yi. Still this little improvement will help you to take towers and deal small amounts of AD (like about 180 when activated).





Highlander

You live for Alpha Strike; but you breathe with Highlander. Why? Simple. Refreshes all cooldowns on a kill! Your main damage output is Alpha Strike, so use your items and Alpha in a teamfight. You got a kill? Good, repeat the process. Since your Alpha Strike deals massive damage, and cooldown never occurs since you got a kill. You deserve to get a pentakill.

This doesn't need some explaining but, Alpha Strike is your main skill and your only damage dealer as an AP, so level it up as much as you can. Second to level is Meditate, which is the greatest sustain skill ever, also your defensive & baiting skill. Wuju Style must be least of your concern, since we are building AP.

space Attack Order is very simple, but hard at using. Since you are AP, you lack of auto attack damage. If first Alpha Strike doesn't deal 3/4 of your targets health, that kill becomes very risky. Assuming that things go well, use Alpha, then combine Highlander + Wuju Style and let Yi do his work. (you might notice that there are two of "4." this is because if things go very very wrong use meditate at a safe place. If you can't go to a safe place or your enemy has no hard CC, just use it as you see your health drop less than 3/4)

Items (For AP)

Classic Build



Why these items?
I updated myself so now these items became more classic and useful. Lich Bane is for your initial strike combo. Alpha Strike + Lich Bane can kill any carry easily. Deathfire Grasp is for high healthed targets, if a carry gets Warmog's Armor use it and combo to kill, or save this for 2nd attack. Since it deals maximum health as damage it will shred the health of your enemies. Zhonya's Hourglass is unnecessary to talk about. Liandry's Torment is my new favourite item. Dealing %5 of your enemies current health cannot be underestimated in a teamfight.

Teamfight!

If you've watched this will give you an idea about how to use Alpha Strike in team fight.
  • Aim for the carry or the guy with the lowest health. Start with an item active as an initiator.
  • Use Highlander and attack with Alpha Strike. Make an auto-attack. Still not dead? Use Wuju Style and make another hit. (Assuming that you've built the full item build.)
  • He should be dead, now proceed to next low healthed champion. Remember to use Highlander to continue this combo.
  • If you are in danger, such as you got one kill; but 4 of them are focused on you and you couldn't kill another one. Use Meditate if it is very critical, use Zhonya's Hourglass.
  • Later use Alpha Strike and Highlander combo again.

How to Harass...


Aim for a minion, which is close to your escape and also close to your enemy.



Start praying, hope that Alpha Strike will hit him. Here you can see a route of Alpha Strike



Success! Now do it again =)

Tips & Tricks About Alpha Strike
  • Use it against a very low healthed minion, which will die before you hit. Since the first minion you hit doesn't exist, at the end of strike you will appear at the initial cast position.
  • Since it doesn't seem to have a proper striking patern. Try to use it at where there aren't many minion wandering around. if it has a patern, please tell me.

Conclusion

Since you are an assasin, you rely on teams & lanes. If your team is good, you will be the damage source. If they are good, you will deal the damage, tank the incoming damage (for AP) and make critical skill combos to save the game.

Depending on lane is about the champion getting fed and as we know a fed champion is a good champion ;)
