The Lore

During the most recent winter solstice - when no other night during the year is longer - a being like no other emerged from the forgotten alleyways of Noxus. Standing eight feet tall, and concealed within a razor-sharp armored shell, he came to be known only as Mordekaiser. The nature of what lies beneath his metallic carapace is a popular subject of speculation. Many allege that he is a mortal man with a heart that has hardened to iron. Others insist that he is a dark specimen of the undead. But there are some who whisper warnings that he is merely a foreshadowing of something terrible and unprecedented yet to come. Despite the public conjecture and curiosity, none have discovered what lies beneath his alloyed exterior. What is known is this: Mordekaiser arrived unannounced at the Institute one day and, with a rasp that crept ice up the spines of all within earshot, requested to join the League of Legends.

Upon glimpsing his fearful visage, most keep their distance, fortunately unaware that his touch bears a sinister scourge. Those who stumble within his grasp fall victim to incurable maladies. In fact, Mordeakiser seems mystically attuned to sickness, as if it feeds and comprises part of his chilling essence. He now stalks the slums of Noxus, drawn to the plague-ridden and diseased. However, there is something in his clever tactics, something in his noble stance, and something in the tone of his unearthly commands that has led many to believe that Mordekaiser is more than just a foot soldier. Some see the distinguishing characteristics of a general. While many have learned to accept the evidence of this unsettling possibility, a lingering questions keeps them wary at the witching hour: if Mordekaiser is a general, what nightmarish legion lurks at his command?

"The common perception is that the encompassing armor protects him, I fear that - for the fragile time being - it actually protects us." - Rozuel Fecirem, Arch Adjudicator, noted in Mordekaiser's eligibility evaluation

Pros / Cons

Here are some reasons why you can/should Mordekaiser as a tanky AP:
  • the passive shield gives you some "extra" life
  • your ultimate makes percentual damage and can be combined with Deathfire Grasp
  • Very tanky if well build
  • you will farmout almost everone on solotop !!

And here are some cons:
  • Not as strong as full AP Mordekaiser
  • Unfortunatly no CC

Masteries

I took 22/8/0 masteries. Although i play Morde as a tank i spend 22 points on offense and the last 6 on defense. You can also play with 9/21/0 or sth. like this.

Runes

Marks:
I decided to take Greater Mark of Magic Penetration because they give me some nice magic pen.
Seals:
As Seals I took Greater Seal of Armor to get some extra armor.
Glyphs:
For the Glyphs i took Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist to get some bonus magic resist.
Armor and Magic Resist can be pretty cool in early games ;)
Quintessences:
And last but not least, I decided to take Greater Quintessence of Ability Power for some extra AP in early game, which makes farming with Q and E easier.

Ability Explanation + Ability Sequence

Iron Man is the passive of Mordekaiser.
"35% of the damage dealt from abilities is converted into a temporary shield, absorbing incoming damage. Shield generation is only half as effective against minions. Maximum shield strength is 90 + (30 x level). The shield decays by 3% per second."
So your maximum shield strength on lvl 18 is 90+(30x18) = 630. It's pretty cool in early game, because you dont loose life. You can also use it for tower dives if you wish (:

Mace of Spades is the Q spell of Mordekaiser.
"On next hit, Mordekaiser swings his mace with such force that it echoes out, striking up to 3 additional nearby targets, dealing 80 / 110 / 140 / 170 / 200 (+1 per bonus attack damage) (+40% of ability power) magic damage. If the target is alone, the ability deals 132 / 181.5 / 231 / 280.5 / 330 (+1.65 per bonus attack damage) (+66% of ability power)."
This is a very powerfull spell against singular champions, but you can use it for farming against multiple targets too.

Creeping Deathis the W spell of Mordekaiser.
"Unleashes a protective cloud of metal shards to surround an ally or himself, increasing their armor and magic resistance by 10 / 15 / 20 / 25 / 30 and dealing 24 / 38 / 52 / 66 / 80 (+20% of ability power) damage per second to enemies in the cloud for 6 seconds.".
This can be pretty good in teamfight to get more armor and magic resistance. The damage will also recharge your shield.

Siphon of Destruction is the E spell of Mordekaiser.
"Mordekaiser damages enemies in a cone in front of him, dealing 70 / 115 / 160 / 205 / 250 (+60% of ability power) magic damage."
This will be your most important spell because it deals the most damage. Use it for farming and recharging your shield.

Children of the Grave is the R of Mordekaiser.
"Mordekaiser deals an initial 12 / 14.5 / 17 (+2% of ability power) % magic damage equal to that percentage of the target's maximum health and curses it for 10 seconds. During these 10 seconds, 1.2 / 1.45 / 1.7 (+2% of ability power) % magic damage equal to that percentage of the target's maximum health per second is dealt.
If the target dies while under the effect of the curse, their soul is enslaved and will follow Mordekaiser for 30 seconds. During this time, Mordekaiser gains 20% of their ability power, and attack damage. The spirit gains 75% of Mordekaiser's adjusted damage, ability power, and health totals.
Pets can be controlled by holding the alt key and using the right mouse button."
This is your hardest spell in game. Well placed, it is very strong. It deals percentual damage overtime. Try to "lasthit" especially ad carries, because their ghosts deal tons of damage (you can combine it with your Deathfire Grasp !)

Skill Sequence is very easy when you play Morde. It's alwayse the same ^^
First max your E, then your Q and at last your W. Upgrade your R when you can.

Main Items

I start with Boots and 3 Health Potion, so I can move faster and I use the Health Potion to restore the life. Remember that your spells cost life! You can also pick Regrowth Pendant and 1 Health Potion if you prefer this. But when you play against champions with skillshots (like Nidallee) Boots are the better choice.

After that I take Hextech Revolver to get some spellvamp and AP. It's perfect for Morde because now you can cast your spells as you wish (Spellvamp ~ Lifecost of spell)

Kage's Lucky Pick
Kage's Lucky Pick is my next choice. This will give you some bonus gold over time. Its pretty cool, because you need both of them for your Late-Game-items.

Now I pick Mercury's Treads because they are the best boots for late game. They give you small magic resist and Tenacity, which helps you to escape from stuns, snares and so on.

After that could buy a second golditem Heart of Gold if you dont get much farm or kills. I will later use it to finish my Randuin's Omen.

After that i buy Rylai's Crystal Scepter which gives me some nice health, AP and also a slow on my spells. Thats very useful when they try to tank you, or your jungler ganks top.

Now i convert Heart of Gold (if you have purchsed it) to Randuin's Omen to get some health, armor, health reg. and cooldown, and a slow on enemies that attack you. Use the active in teamfights against ad carries.

Now i finish my Deathfire Grasp which helps you a lot against tanks because it makes percentual damage!

Next I buy Abyssal Mask to get even more AP and some magic resist. It's also pretty cool for teamfight, beacuse it's passive reduces the magic resist of champions near you.

As last I decided to buy Warmog's Armor to get tons of (not damage ^^) health and health regeneration. Before you can do this, remember to sell your Hextech Revolver

Situational Items

This item build is not perfect for every game! Some of your items may be bad in special situations. So here are some situational items i suggest:

Instead of using Mercury's Treads it's better to buy Ninja Tabi when most of the enemy champions scale on AD.

You can buy a Thornmail in the same situation as described above ;)

Instead of Kage's Lucky Pick you can swap this with Heart of Gold

You can also buy Zhonya's Hourglass to get much AP and armor. The active is very good, when the whole enemy team tries to focus you ;)

Rabadon's Deathcap can be bought instead of Deathfire Grasp when you like to have more AP.

Some people suggest Guardian Angel for Mordekaiser, because it gives armor, magic resist and a cool passive effect that can revieve you. This passive is perfectly for your R because you cant control a champ that died to R after you died. But with Guardian Angel you can control the ghost and make kills, but they can't kill you ;)

Viable Summoner Spells

I decided to take Ghost and Ignite, but you can also use some of these:

With Ghost it's pretty easy to escape but you can als chase enemies (combine it with the slow of Rylai's Crystal Scepter !). You can also use it to get on toplane faster after death.

Flash is almost the best summoner spell in the whole game. You can either use it to escape from a fight you'll lose or you can chase enemies that try to get away.

Teleport can be an alternative to Ghost, because it's the fastest way to get back to toplane after death or recall. It's also good, to attack enemies in a teamfight from behind. Remember you can also teleport to Wards ! (For example you can teleport to your ward on top lane and gank together with the jungler, while the enemy tries to attack your tower)

Ignite can be used in different situations. You can use it to counter the heal effect of enemy champions, possible targets are Dr. Mundo or Vladimir. But you can also target squishys, that try to run aways. You can also secure firstblood with it.

Heal can be an alternative to Ignite because gettin some heal in the right moment can decide a fight. It can also be used in teamfights to heal your teammates.

Buffs

Mordekaiser is able to use both buffs in a good way.
The blue buff increases his amount of AP and his cooldownreduction. You can easily reach 40& cooldownreduction with Randuin's Omen and the blue buff.
The red buff helps you with your lack of CC. you gain a small slow from redbuff, which can be important in teamfights.

Team Work

As playing an offtank/Tanky AP Morde, you shall try to initiate teamfights if there are no other good tanks in your team. Try to begin with a full shield and use Randuin's Omen to counter the ad carry of the enemy. It's alwayse good when u use Creeping Death at the beginning becaue it gives you some armor and magic resist and recovers your shield by doing areadamage. Use your Q and E to get up your shield again. Try to cast your R on ad carrys (their ghost are very strong!). Or use your Deathfire Grasp to lower them. Remember to use Ignite (squishy carrys or special champs(e.g. Dr. Mundo or Vladimir)) Remember, R and Deathfire Grasp deal percentual damage!

Farming

Farming with Morde is one of the easiest things to do ^^
In early game just try to wait until some minions are low life and cast your E to get all of them. In late game you will be able to kill a whole wave of mimions with just E and Q.
Jungling is getting easier in mid-game but is hard in early game.
Morde's spells just cost health, so after Regrowth Pendant or Hextech Revolver you'll be able to spam Q, W and E as you like :D

Winning by Feeding ?!

This is a pretty awesome tactics :D
All you need is Mordekaiser and Yorick. Buy Guardian Angel and Zhonya's Hourglass for Mordekaiser. Now you all have to feed the enemy AD Carry (no other!) and after he has enaugh equipent. kil him in a teamfight, use Mordekaisers Ultimate and clone the ghost with yoricks ultimate .. and then push & win :D
Back to Top

Tips and Tactics

Here are some tips when you play Mordekaiser on Lane:
  • Children of the Grave is countered by Quicksilver Sash! If your enemies bought that item, use your ultimate on him just to "last hit" him.
  • Spell penetration is usually better than ability power.
  • Do not get kited easily!
  • "Best defense is offense" A full shield is often overlooked. You'll see which fights you will win and which not.
  • Don't try to kill enemies on your own without Rylai's Crystal Scepter or red buff, because they will easily escape from you.

Playing on SoloTop

Playing on Solotop is very chilly, because you play as midlane 1v1. But there is only one side where gankers can come from. So as you come back first, buy some ward and place it in the bush under the mid of the toplane. You dont have such good escape skills, because Mordehaiser has no CC. You can also buy a counterward if you know that the enemy has warded and you wanna make the gank easier for your jungler. Try to get most of the minion kills and hit the enemy with your E or Q if possible.

Summary

As you see, it can be pretty cool to play Mordekaiser as a tanky AP :D
But now you have finally reached ... THE END.
