Since rylai's are not unique, you pop your ultimate and most people dont get away. Early game tormented soil is some amazing farming and you can deal more damage with it than binding. I only get magic shield level one to prevent slows, stuns, etc. Once you have the rod of ages you see the difference slowly as the game progresses. The 1st rylais should come soon. hopefully by now you have over 150 minion kills and a few team fights under your belt. grab the next 2 rylais and lichbane and noone should escape the wrath of morgana.

The reason you start with the sapphire is so that you can spam your abilities and hopefully not only farm but get someone in a position to get a kill. At level 4 your black shield should be leveled as it is a lifesaver for you or an ally in a potential gank. Your 1st item Catalyst and boots will allow you to stay in lane and farm, and help get successful ganks. Hopefully at around 10 or 11 minutes you should have rod sorceror's and almost a rylai's pending on how well you farm and gank. The rest is up to you after your 1st rylai's depending on if your team needs damage or tank get either the lich bane, for damage, or other rylai's for tank, since you aren't sacrificing damage for tank this item becomes very useful late game.

Pros:

Tormented soil makes it easier to land the bind
Last and not least you are a tank

Cons:
fairly low on the magic pen
earthly bind doesn't do as much as you hope early
magic sheild only lasts so long early game
