Hello, my ign is Pieson, and I have been playing LoL since about late July of 2010. I have about 800+ games played over the past months. My solo queue elo is about 14xx, so I am not the best player by any means. I do, however, have a lot of experience playing this game. I mainly play heroes that farm a lot, such as ranged AD carries and some tanky DPS. I only have about 50 ranked games played, however I do watch streams very often and watch many tourneys.
roles of a champion
There are many roles that a champ can fill in, but there are some general roles
Roles in lane
- Jungler: plays most of the lane phase in the jungle, killing the neutral camps. Also ganks and helps the other lanes. It's very important to make sure your team has a jungler, because without one you lose out on all the possible exp and gold you can get, as well as losing constant pressure on other lanes
- Solo lanes: usually chaps that need large amounts of farm go in these. In general, mid is always solo and when you have a jungler top is solo due to dragon control
- duo lane: bot lane, usually consists of support and another champ, however in solo queue play often it's just 2 champs that are picked that don't call solo lanes
- Roamer: this is a new role that is evolving in the current metagame. The roamer gives a third solo lane in bot lane, which is usually given to a champ that can sustain well. the roamer then runs around and puts additional pressure onto the top and mid lane, trying to give the team kills and improve lane dominance
Then there are roles for a champ to fit into after laning ends
- Tank: soaks up damage for team, usually has large amount of CC so force the other team to focus them
- DPS carry: almost always AD, and usually ranged. Is meant to do the main damage and kill the other team
- Burst: usually AP, meant to kill a target quickly.
- Support: meant to help another one of the roles do their job. Usually has a heal or shield and also gives some form of buff to the team.
- Tanky DPS: almost always melee, runs into the enemy team and deals a medium amount of damage.
Notes for tier list
This tier list is by no means perfect. I do not know everything, so some champs may be underrated or overrated. Also, it is very possible to carry with a champ that is low tier, it's just that some champs are easier to carry with than other. I have seen people carry with low tier champs, but you carry much more often with champs of higher tier ranking. Tier lists are currently arranged alphabetically, but I may update them with the champs from best to worst in each tier.

explaination for tier 1
Alistar Alistar is a very strong champ that can fit into many different roles. He can be a roamer, a bot lane support, a solo lane AP carry, or even a jungler. And with all these roles, his ult allows him to tank a bit even with no tank items. Alistar is a great option for a hero to learn if you want somebody that can do a bit of everything.
Ashe Ashe is one of the strongest AD carries in the game. Her ability to have a strong initiation in solo queue is one that helps drastically. Often your tanks won't initiate a fight when it is in your favor, so using your ult will have to do. She has more utility than any other ranged AD hero, because she has built in CV so that you don't have to facecheck and die. She is best put in a bot lane to be babysat by a support, however she can go in mid as long as you are not laning against a very stong mid (like annie, vlad, etc.)
Cho'Gath Cho is another champ that can fill many roles. He can solo, duo, 1v2 when your team has a roam, and even jungle. His passive allows him to sustain very well in lane. He can be built AP (which is not ideal), AP tank (works great in some situations), or full tank. He brings a lot of cc if you can hit rupture, and the true damage on his ult is ridiculous for a tank. I may have him a bit too high, but I feel like he really earns his spot because he is suck an agro wh0re tank.
Corki Corki is the ranged AD carry that brings close to the highest single target damage and the highest AoE damage. His utility in escaping in lane is great, letting him solo lane against strong solos or dominate his lane bottom. He has great farming skills with his Phosphorus bomb and missles, and can punish the enemy team for not having enough armor with his Gatling gun. He lacks some utility, but makes up for that with the sheer amount of damage he deals.
Gangplank Gangplank is everybody's favorite new FotM (Flavor of the Month) hero. He can jungle or lane, and his new slowing passive with a redbuff, plus the speed he has with his E is absurd. He can help his team anywhere with his ult and has a built in QSS with heal, making him very difficult to lock down. I'm not sure if he really deserves tier 1, but as of now from what I see he belongs for the time being.
Irelia Irelia is a champ who can carry by farming, which is something that is very powerful. When she gets farmed in a solo lane, she can tank and also kill the enemy carry with her burst. She can beat most solos, and at least stay up and not die against the others. Great tanky DPS champ.
Karthus after the nerfs I may have him too high, but I feel that a skilled karthus player can just destroy the enemy team in lane. He can go top and farm for a long time, assisting in dragon fights with his ult. In lategame teamfights, Karthus is the only carry that is able to deal massive damage after dying. If you can land his Q well, you will almost certainly destroy the enemy team. The only thing he is lacking is a hard cc, but his damage and the slow from his wall make up for that.
Malzahar This champion's 1v1 burst if absolutely insane. While annie can take down squsihy targets with 1 combo, malzahar can take down tanks OR squishy targets. He can farm insanely hard in lane, and his puddle will destroy the enemy team. His main problem in solo queue is that your team needs good initiation and cc to win teamfights. With an amumu or cho'gath on your team, you can force the enemy to stand in your pool, and keep them off you while you channel your ult.
Nunu Nunu is one of the best junglers in the game. I may have put him up too high with his recent nerfs, but his ability to counterjungle and gank early is amazing. The buff he provides to your AD carry is absolutely amazing. The amount of slow you provide is great. The enemy has to CC or burst you down when they fight you or they will get destroyed.
Taric Taric provides amazing support in bot lane, with heals and great spammable cc. He can roam and provide kills for your solo lanes when your bot doesn't need the help. A really solid pick for a support.
