Introduction

Soraka is a healer type of supports who many people view as passive due to her low damage and lack of hard CC. She doesn't work with all teams, but she's a great asset for teams however due to her excellent healing skills and overall sustain provided by both heals and her Equinox. She also provides some CC in the form of silence and a magic resist debuff from Starcall which makes her good with teams that do heavy magic damage.

Nowadays you can play Soraka as an aggressive support maxing her Q instead, but this build focuses on her being a healer early game and mid to late game slightly more offensive, but mainly this is a healer build.

Matchups/Counters

They have a really good amount of poke and you can easily give them more manna with Infuse when they need it to continue harassing the enemy team.

...................................................................................... Counters

.........................................
All these have a decent amount of poke against Soraka but can also be easily dodged. Aim for them early game and poke them as much as you can before they get a head start in your lane. Be warned, they have a good harass.

...............................................................................Gets Countered By

....................................................................
These guys are tanks, which is why it's natural for Soraka to be weak against them. Her Infuse will still silence them, but it don't do as much damage as you'd like to them due to the MR they will most likely get. Watch out for the Thresh hooks and the Blitzcrank pulls because you don't have a good escape and you're extremely squishy until mid game.

Skills

Gives you %70 bonus movement speed when running toward a hurt ally and it also provides you with a gold arrow pointing to an ally near by who is low health as you can tell by how many gold arrows you have around you. Plus if your not someone who watches the map that well, it gives you a heads up as to where a fight might be happening (and the movement speed to get there).
At a higher level of play, you can use the bonus movement speed to run behind allies and harass the enemies that are chasing them. In this case, you don't want to heal your ally past 40% health or you will lose your bonus movement speed. This can be a life saving move which your team will thank you.

Is a good ability for keeping your own health up when used to hit enemy champions. The heal you receive is based off of Astral Infusion, so if you find yourself with dwindling health, try to use this ability to regain some back. It also provides a reasonable slow affect when you hit another enemy champion with the middle of your Starcall. This means it can be used to help chase down an enemy or to slow an enemy down so you or an ally can escape.
The downsides to this ability is that the mana cost is pretty high so if you are continually using it, you will find yourself quickly with no mana. Also, be careful when using this ability to regain health from enemies as they may take advantage of your lower health situation for an easy kill.

Is your bread and butter heal. It has a short cool down which you can spam every few seconds until you run low on your own health. It also has the passive that works with your Starcall to provide you with health whenever you hit an enemy champion.

can change the tide of a fight or provide an escape route for allies. Not only does it silence those standing in it but it also will root them after 1.5 seconds. If you use this ability correctly, you can time it so that when the enemy champs run into it, they get rooted instead of just running though it silenced. The only other options they will have is to run around the pool, wait back for it to disappear or stop chasing. Keep in mind that this skill has the highest cool down other then her ult so make sure you are using it at the right time or it may not be up when you need it.

Is your game changing ultimate which heals for more if allied champions are below 40%. champions. Wish can affect untargetable allies.

Armor Penetration Marks allows some harass power even if you max heal.

Armor Seals are a suitable alternative for laning phase. Greater Seal of Armor is and has been the norm for supports for a long time. You don't want to go to bot lane with too low armor, because you'll die. Alternatively you can grab the scaling ones as they're much better late game. Soraka has a decent armor to begin with so you can try which suit you better.

For glyphs I take the MR Runes in case of being targeted.
(Another good alternative to glyphs are the (scaling) magic resist runes if you feel too damn squishy with your 30 MR. I usually manage till I get mr from items, but it might be a good idea to try the magic resist runes).

Greater Quintessence of Health proves extra hp which gives you a starting hp of whopping 600+ with runes and masteries.

Items of Situation

If none of your tanks get this, you can. Some nice HP, armor and a slow active.

I personally like getting this because it's active slows down escaping enemies for easy kills for any of your teammates. It can be a good thing during team fights.

zeke's herald I get this sometimes because of the bonus Life Steal it grants allies. It can be very useful in team fights, but not always needed.

Spam Starcall and laugh at the enemy. Gives HP and AP and it's just fun to have this

I love this just for the bonus AP it gives! I find it perfect for "Healer Soraka"

Gives a nice magic resist aura to team since Soraka doesn't give it anymore and also has a shield active. If jungler/top doesn't buy this, you should.

Doesn't build out of anything you're already carrying, but it's still a good item for [[Soraka] since it gives a lot of CDR, ap and mana regen and a passive that reduces healing effects so it's good against healer teams.

This is here just for the case it DOES work well with the slow provided by Rylai's Scepter and if it does, your damage will highly increase through using both items since Liandry's Torment does more damage to movement impaired units.

Archangel's Staff simply because Infuse scales out of max mana and because it's easy to stack it with Starcall.

Almost the same as Morellonomicon with the only exception that it gives 40 magic resist and less AP and no passive healing reduction. When building aggressive Soraka, Athene's Unholy Grail is a better choice than the Morellonomicon because it gives you magic resist and higher mana regen for spamming Starcall.

Technically Frozen Heart isn't a support item, but it's supportive(ish) so it goes here. I'd prefer the tank to buy this, but it's still a good item against heavy AD/AS teams.

Technically this isn't a support item at all, but I keep it as an option because of the bonus AP it gives and it's active.

I like to get Warmog's Armor on Soraka to keep my health regen as high as possible due to it's 1% max health regen in combat and 3% max out of combat.

Gameplay

Soraka is often thought to be a passive support, but with recent changes she's driven towards being more aggressive especially if building AP. The thing is, Soraka hasn't been strictly passive for a long time, but people just view her that way, because the first thing you think about Soraka and max as first is her heal Astral Blessing. Whereas it's important to max your heal first for sustain, you have two other skills which can be used in a harassive and aggressive manner and should be used like that. Nowadays you don't even have to max W first, but since this is a healer build, I'll still recommend taking at least 2 points into it before going for more offensive spell-kit.

Farming:

As a support you're not allowed to farm, but it's ok since we all got nice gold items like Ancient Coin which I recommend for Soraka and Spellthief's Edge which I don't recommend unless you play a Battleraka.

Gold items give you plenty of gold throughout the game so you're not left behind horribly bad considering that assist streaks give you gold as well along with the occasional kill steals. If your carry isn't on the lane, you can farm but not push unless it's totally intended (like in the times you decide to go push the bot lane while your team is doing something else).

Game phases:

Early Game your sole intention is to babysit and aid your carry with their farming. You take care of their sustain and aid them in killing the enemy if they decide to farm champions instead of minions.

Mid Game you either keep on farming or start roaming and pushing turrets. Note that too early turret pushing will result in your carry getting less farm, but more money for your whole team and an advantage in pushing (objectives are more important than kills!).

Late Game you go wherever your team goes. You ward out the most important objectives and use your Greater Lens/ Oracle's Lens when you know where the enemy wards are and take care of your team along vision.

Overall throughout the game you should stay alongside your carry. They are your main objective in teamfights although you can and should save your other teammates as well while spamming Starcall and silencing the mages and other people who have nasty skills.

Rules as a Support

You go bot lane with an AD carry. If it's not AD, it changes nothing.

You don't take last hits when your ally is on the lane. You are allowed to farm as long as you're not farming when someone else is there. This means you can take last hits, when they go back and you stay behind, but don't push.

If you do farm when you're (hopefully) temporarily alone on the lane, don't push the lane. Just last hit. People are very sensitive about this even if it's the jungler, but imagine how they'll rage if you steal your carries farm.

Harass the enemy if you can, try to outzone them by harassing them to low HP and putting yourself in a position that forces them to go back outside the farming range. If you're the one outzoned/harassed hard, heal your ally and make sure he can last hit safely.

Buy and put wards and beware of ganks, inform your own jungler of the enemy wards and set up ganks.

Your carry is your 1st priority. Protect them at all costs, even if you have to sacrifice yourself to do it. That doesn't mean suicide though.

Don't be greedy. Don't take kills unless you have to or you're the only one who can. Don't killsteal intentionally, but sometimes it just happens with Power Chords, so be a nice guy/girl and apologize. Some buttlicking doesn't hurt with all these sensitive people around.

Watch whole map, not just your own lane and ping/inform your allies of approaching enemies. Pinging Miss-pings and maybe even writing on the chat goes to this section and even if your mid doesn't say anything, but the enemy is gone there, you can ping it instead. Support is the team captain, hence we got Captain enchantment for boots!
