Introduction: Riven is OP

I decided to write this short guide especially focusing on the item builds, since many Riven players in lower ranks or who are new to Riven think getting Blood Thirster first is a must. Riven has a high AD ratio especially with Q buff on, so adding a little bit of AD helps Riven a lot. Unless you are against newbies who will let you free farm until you get 1550 golds (which will never happen in ranked games), you will likely to recall before you get over 1550 golds. If you want to buy B.F. Sword first, you need at least 1700 golds for a ward and health potions. When you can get stronger and farm more easily, why would you get stuck in the desperation of B.F. Sword?

My item builds focus on minimizing damage loss gaps throughout the entire game, with variations for possible situations. Hence, constantly watch the enemies builds and decide what to buy (applies to everyone with any champion actually).

If you are able to kill the enemy ADC and mid laner quickly, they will cry out for nerfing Riven.

To me, Riven should be able to burst damage and kill almost everyone with 1-2 combo. I don't honestly care if I die after killing 2 or 3 because the rest of my team will take care after. In order to achieve this, you should win your lane early so that you can farm on minions while your enemy fails to keep up with farming.

21/9 Masteries will make sense for that, and please note that masteries are not fixed - You should be able to make changes according to the enemy team composition.

For example, go for 3 resistances in Defense tree instead of 3 Hardiness if you are against AP top. 21 Offense tree should be solid unless you play in a different style.. like a tanky Riven or you want attack speed (although I don't see any advantage of these over extreme AD). Because your spells won't be affected by attack speed or critical rate, and Riven is not built in the way to generate sustained damage.

Team Work

In team fights, Riven's job is to take down the enemy ADC and mid laner with high burst. Because Riven has so much high burst damage, she can kill them before they get you if you properly play. Later on when your build is complete, you should be able to take down anyone including the tanks. However, you should always focus on the ones who do the most damages on the enemy team because after your QWE are used, you are vulnerable to them.

When the enemy is chasing down your team, use Q and W to stop them and use E to get out unless you are sure you can kill them before you die.

Riven is a hard carry champion, but don't forget that it's a team game. You will never be able to win against 5 enemies alone.

NEVER FORGET to stay positive until the end of the game, and complement your teammates every time. You will win more if you can do that with skills. Vice versa, you will lose more with negative attitudes even with great game skills. I've learned this in a hard way.
