Olaf is an extremely situational champion he can be built to withstand any team it just depends on who does the most damage and if your opponents are AD or AP heavy. The loading screen is a great time to plan out your core build. I generally go with a lot of magic resist unless they have some really heavy AD hitters and in that case a Thornmail may be necessary but i normally try to get items with effects that are more helpful in a team fight than Thornmail.
Your really going to want to actually read the guide and keep in mind a lot of the tips that I'm giving and not just look at the items. This guide to Olaf is extremely detailed and WILL make you a better Olaf player.
This should be your average build normally you wouldn't get to Randuin's and the Sunfire cape is optional but in an extended game this is what you'd probably want. if the game is ending at the 30-45 min mark then you would probably want to skip the Sunfire and go straight to the GA.
(Do not be afraid to throw in a Thornmail in place of one of the other items)
If the opposing team is leaning more towards AD dps that are eating your health to quickly then your build would probably look more like this.
I prefer the Ninja Tabi but another good thing about the loading screen is the cc assessment it provides. An average team should know better than to stack all 1 kind of dps and since my average build leans towards magic resist during early game, i tend to use the NT. BUT if you see that the enemy team is stacked with slow, stun, slow, slow, stun champs or has a 4/5 AP/AD champ ratio then you should probably go with the Merc Treads.
Now this may look weird.. but trust me if your getting zoned and you cant farm or your having an off game and aren't getting enough kills or assists to get your gear or if you have a challenging lane grabbing a few of these bad boys can really save you and your team. I cannot stress how important it is to keep up on your gold. So if your not getting enough a build like this may keep you under geared for the first half of the game but after some time you can sell them and have enough gold to 1 buy most of your items and you might even turn out ahead of the game. It can be a great game changer when the under farmed squishy tank all of a sudden roles out with a full build just when the enemy team thinks they won.
Yeah..Yeah..I know this is a tank guide but i dont always play Olaf as tank and im sure you dont either. So.. seeing how my tank build is pure tanky with no AD in it what so ever, i thought i could share a great AD Olaf build that always serves me well. The first three items would be your core and you nearly always want to build them in that order.(Youmuu Olaf is deadly early game and it only gets worse when you get your IE) The last three can be built in any order and are completely situational it depends on if you have to chase often or are getting focused alot, if the enemy tank is starting to get really tanky, or if you just want some life steal and some more dps.
The last three are also replaceable. If you find yourself having a rivalry with an enemy AD/AP champ that likes to focus you AND/OR you find yourself 1v1-ing often, Grabbing a
can definitely give you an advantage in the ensuing battles.
For summoner spells as tank Olaf i prefer Ghost over most other spells because its the all time utility summoner spell. It will not only help you survive, but also help you get to your team/turrets faster, help you chase, and help you initiate if need be.
I also choose to go with Fortify because it IS a life saver. It will protect turrets, discourage diving, and help you get assists if timed and used correctly. [I.E. your teammate is about to be dived, use your fort and you may save his life along with getting an assist and him getting a kill]
Some other viable spells for Olaf areIt all depends on your play style. Just remember to quickly change your talents to fit your chosen spells. The talents i have in place are specific to Ghost and Fort but with different summoner spells the remaining talents after filling the defensive tree could be used to better your chosen spells.
