I'm a novice, only level 21 at the moment but this is roughly the build I'm using (extended to 30).

This build has been very effective for me. Getting Infinity Edge early on, with your high natural crit rate, will allow you to easily gank early on. Boots of Mobility allow you to be seemingly everywhere on the map. Madred's Bloodrazor makes you hit faster, harder, and do an extra 4% of your target's max hp with every attack, especially deadly when combined with your ultimate. The two Phantom Dancers pretty much max out your attack speed, and gives you near 100% crit chance, and gives you around a 37% chance to dodge attacks. If the game progresses to this point (usually doesn't), I sell my Doran's Shield and get a Bloodthirster, it gives lots more attack power and a health draining, which is more useful than 120 extra max health by this point.

I generally take mid, as extra money and levels early on help you be an extremely effective ganker.

When pushing turrets, I cloak for 5-10 seconds before I get to the turret, then pop my ultimate to try to take it down by a lot very quickly. The ultimate also allows you to attack it from farther away than usual, keeping yourself out of range from other ranged champions usually. My median kvd ratio is about 3:1, with extremes around 8:1 (if I'm well fed early on), and my bad games are around 1:1 at worst.

I tend to play with a friend, who usually plays a class that can either slow/root an enemy or stun them (Morgana, Twisted Fate, Ashe, Ryze, etc). He plays in off lanes so I can come in for a gank, he stuns/roots enemies, and I finish them off quickly, it helps me get an early lead, and generally leads to a quick victory/enemy surrender.

A few tips I've discovered:
Generally you shouldn't take tanks on head on, wait until you have backup.
Always try to get the jump with stealth.
Cleanse off stuns as soon as they occur, you can easily die in a single stun as this is a frail but powerful build.
Take out casters first, if they're fed or giving you trouble. You don't have much protection from them, so you need to take them out quickly.
Do not use Spray and Pray on moving targets, unless they're moving straight away from you.
Choose your fights wisely, it's rarely a good idea to attack if outnumbered, and definitely not if one of them can stun you.
Spray and Pray can scare people away from turrets easily.
