Introduction
Today I will present to you a new way to play Veigar, a much sturdier way to play him. Veigar is well known for his excessive amounts of AP and very High AP-Ratios. He is also a champion who typically dies in half of a second the moment a fight breaks out. The way this build will work is to attempt to counter his insta-death while still maintaining his high Burst damage. I hope that you will stay open minded while reading my guide as the play-style I present to you is quite unconventional.
It's all opinion. Personally, I like
Strength of the Ages
because of the bonus health it offers. It makes him that much tankier and fits the theme. More health, less death. This is mostly opinion and although I think SoA is underrated for laners, I get that not everyone wants it. I would recommend Taking 12/18/0 masteries with
Thunderlord's Decree as the keystone for more burst damage.

Seraphs Embrace offers more AP than other items when in combination with other Mana Items. Rod of Ages and Embrace really reinforce this by granting him a good starting point with some tankiness. The shield offered is very important when it comes to surviving as well. The Everfrost adds to this mana health pool as well as some extra burst. The tank items Spirit Visage and Frozen Heart are important but if a situation calls for stats that they can't offer, these are some viable replacements.

This part of the game determines if you can succeed. This is by far the most important part of the game for Tank Veigar. Veigar gains AP from landing spells on enemy champions and killing minions with his Q. If he fails to gain enough AP from, he either won't deal lots of damage and you'll have to abandon the tank aspect of the build. Luckily, if you suck at farming and can't manage to keep up with your Q farming, than you can always just stack AP on the enemy laner.
This build is very cheap by comparison to his normal build.

Veigar's Q, Baleful Strike is his main source of damage and will be his most used spell. Killing minions with it grants 1 AP.
His W, Dark Matter, does a ton of damage but doesn't hit unless they are stunned because of its delay
His E, Event Horizon, is a huge aoe stun but has a delay. It can miss. Hit this before casting his other spells.
Finally, Veigar's Ult., Primordial Burst, has been recently changed into an execution ability that when used on a full health enemy hits like a lock on Q (which still hurts a lot.) But when used on an enemy with less than 33% health, it is 99% a guaranteed kill.
Veigar's brand new passive, Phenomenal Evil Power, is now a core function to how he plays out. His new passive causes him to gain 1 bonus AP whenever he hits an enemy with an ability or kills a normal minion with his Q, 2 bonus AP whenever he kills a large minion or monster with his Q, and 3 bonus AP whenever he kills or gets an assist on an enemy champion. Because of this passive, he can be played in the support role and still gain AP when farming becomes difficult. Veigar thrives in lanes where he can free farm and poke. Early kills really are not necessary to gain a ridiculous amount of damage. His Q does not scale with CDR, therefore, it is less effective. I think its necessary for having his ult up more do to its long cooldown, and his massive stun. Using it more than once in a fight is devastating.
Veigar is definitely best in the mid lane. It is his strongest role by far. With this tankier build however, I think he can survive in top lane and even excel as a support. The build top lane is no diffrent than when going mid, but when going support, I recommend this
