Introduction

Hello I am a pathetic rengar "main" who feasts off salt and the suffering of immobile mages and adcs.

I only reached gold 2 in Solo Q in s7 in OCE because I literally played the 10 Provisional games 2 days before the season ended :^)

Rengar is a great champion and I started playing him about 3 years ago, back when i was a silver scrub . Rengar is classified as an assassin in which there are many different build paths and "play styles". This guide will go through the assassin, AP and bruiser build paths, as well as the reasoning behind my choices regarding the builds.

I hope you get something out of this guide and climb with renguu <3

Jungling

OUTDATED - Updating Soon

Start
Hunter's Machete+ Refillable Potion
(Why? - Rengar relies on Auto Attacking in the early stages, the bonus attack speed is very useful, while refillable potion is very cost efficient.)

Clear:
Red buff start:
1. Red
2. Scuttle
3. Wolves
4. Blue
5. Gromp, and back
6. Then do a full clear consisting of Krugs, Raptors, Wolves and Gromp (They should spawn as you come back)

WHY SKIP KRUGS WHEN STARTING RED?
Pathing takes too slow.

Blue buff start
1. Blue
2. Scuttle
3. Gromp + Wolves and back, buying Long Sword
4. Krugs
5. Raptors
6. Wolves

Tips:
- Clear the Little monsters first, then the boss - you'll take less damage than clearing the big one first.
- For farm efficiency, do not gank pre 6 unless you are sure there is a guaranteed kill.

Poacher's Dirk:
-Watch the minimap to see where the enemy jungler appears.
-Once they're in sight, drop everything (your camps will remain where you left it) and proceed to counter jungle.
-For the sake of safety and your own clear efficiency, just take the "boss" creep (the largest one)
* Note that Poacher's Dirk no long has a cooldown to it, meaning you can take as many as you want before leaving, so keep this in mind if the enemy jungler is ganking or dead *

Summoner Spells

Smite

You're Jungling.

Flash

Escaping and closing gaps

Ghost

To be honest, Ghost isn't even that bad;
- It allows you to gank from further distances as you travel faster.
- Speeds you up, meaning you can jump further from a bush
- Significantly less cooldown than flash
- Supplements for Yoummu's Ghostblade

Ignite

Not recommended, but maybe ignite for invades? Idk.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

Has an "element of surprise" with the Thrill of The Hunt

Insanely high burst damage

Doesn't require any type of cost for abilities

Bonetooth Necklace rewards you for getting kills/assists

Easy to learn

Easy to snowball with the Thrill of The Hunt

Thrill of The Hunt provides map pressure and roaming

Cons:

Weak to CC

Can't teamfight

Feast or Famine playstyle means that there's a high risk into picking Rengar

Little to no impact if you're behind

Easily dealt with if the enemy groups

You have to be patient - going in alone means you're dead

THEY CAN SEE YOU

ULT INDICATOR FROM THE MOON

Runes

Runes
AD Assassin rune page:

Main Tree: DOMINATION

KEYSTONE: Electrocute

Electrocute is basically the same as Thunderlords Decree, however unlike TD, it does ADAPTIVE damage, instead of magic damage, meaning that as an AD assassin, your damage is significantly amplified
[I have not tested the other two keystones yet, but they also seem pretty viable)

Sudden Impact

It fundamentally synergies with the Thrill of the Hunt and your leap, which basically means FREE lethality when ever you go in.
Why Sudden Impact over Cheap Shot/Taste of Blood?
- Basically, free Lethality is vastly greater than bonus true damage or healing. This is because as an assassin, you aim to burst vulnerable targets, where healing or bonus true damage is not really necessary.

Eyeball Collection

You basically get FREE AD by killing wards and Champions. This is so good because you can easily spot out wards with Scryer's Bloom, Duskblade and sweepers, while synergising with your bone tooth necklace.
Why Eyeball Collection over Zombie Ward or Ghost Poro?
- Because free AD is better than free vision.
+ 7.24 Nerfed EBC in that assists now give 1 eyeball instead of 2. Not much of a significant nerf, but it maydelay your bonus AD if you're getting assists instead of kills.

Relentless Hunter

Synergises very well with Youmuu's, Thrill of the Hunt, Waterwalking, and the potential Cloud Drake, making you extremely fast for catching up to enemies and gives you bonus AD from Celerity.
Why Relentless Hunter over Ravenous or Ingenious Hunter?
- Once again, healing isn't really necessary when you're bursting prey
- Though Active Item CDR can be very effective in some situations, the movespeed and bonus AD that this rune page offers greatly exceeds the benefits from item CDR.

Secondary Tree: Sorcery [Free AD]

Waterwalking

Allows for faster pathing into enemy jungle as well as towards lane. Also good for escaping, ganking and chasing.

Celerity

Gives AD from bonus Movement Speed

Standard AP rune page:

Rengar has a relatively high AP scaling on w, meaning that building AP is somewhat viable.
The runes for the AP build is relatively similar, except for the Scorch rune from the Sorcery Tier. This is because it's more useful on AP than AD since it does bonus AP damage.

Items

AD Items
Skrimisher's Sabre Enchantment: Warrior
"Great item for rengar!! Loads of AD AND CDR wow! It's Purrfect!!!" No -Don't get it. Why not?
1. You don't need the +180% base mana regeneration.
2. The smite passives (Challenging and Chilling) aren't game breaking and therefore, they don't contribute to Rengar's combos.
3. Doesn't build into anything useful .
4. Let's do the Math:
Warrior -2626G = 60AD + 10%CDR
Caulfield's Warhammer + Serrated Dirk + Long Sword 2550 = 55AD + 10%CDR + Extra 15 damage after you kill ANY unit + builds into your two main items: Tiamat and Youmuu's Ghostblade/Duskblade

Poacher's Dirk
For fancy kids who invade.
Not exactly sure about the efficiency of this item as, although it is 350g cheaper than Serrated. However, it has been changed in that there is no longer a cooldown to camp stealing. This means that you could get Serrated Dirk significantly faster now.

Edge of Night

What is counter play? Long, Low CD spell shield and basically guarantees you a free kill as your jump can't be cancelled by a simple thresh flay. It also adds to your overall survivability with the additional health and spell shield.

Youmuu's Ghostblade

Its active: +20% Movement speed, can be used while Rengar is stealthed giving him greater chase potential.
Not only is its Active useful, but the overall stats: 40 Movement Speed, 10% CDR, 55 Ad and 18 Lethality are exceptionally good items that an assassin Rengar wants and needs.

Ionian Boots of Lucidity

Cheap as it gives you 45 Movement Speed and 10% CDR for both Summoner Spells and Abilities for its low price of 900G

[Note: Keep in Mind that Black Cleaver + Ghostblade + Duskblade gives you max CDR, meaning that you should opt for Merc Treads or Ninja Tabis for Tenacity or Auto Attack damage taken reduction respectively]

Ravenous Hydra/Tiamat

In the case of Ravenous Hydra, its total price of 3500 is generally too expensive - it should only be upgraded last as you only need its crescent active. Instead, it's recommended that you buy tiamat for 1200G and spend the remaining 2300G on something nicer [E.g. Serrated Dirk + Caulfield's Warhammer]. Hydra/Tiamat is great on Rengar as it provides AOE when auto-attacking and works as an auto reset upon activating the crescent active.

Duskblade of Draktharr

Duskblade is a very good item for Rengar, and I generally get it first. This is because:
- Its Nightstalker Passive gives you BONUS damage on your next auto attack (when you're jumping in)
- Its Blackout Passive means you can spot and instantly kill wards/traps
The stats it provides are very useful on Rengar as the 18 lethality adds to Rengar's ever growing arsenal and Movement Speed enables Rengar to chase down prey with ease. ( +55 AD self explanatory )

Trinity Force

Besides the 250 Mana, the stats and passives Trinity Force grants on Rengar is great. With the removal of Zeal, and the addition of Stinger, Trinity Force now gives 20% CDR. This means that instead of buying Lucid boots, you can get Youmuu's, Duskblade and Trinity Force to reach the max 40% CDR. Furthermore, the Movement Speed granted by Phage upon basic attacks or kills allowing you to chase down prey without your Ult. Squishy enemy? Tri Force.

The Black Cleaver

Like Trinity Force, The Black Cleaver allows you to get 45% CDR from two items. Unlike Trinity Force, The Black Cleaver reduces the armor of an enemy Champion by 4% for 6 seconds (Stacks up to 6 times - 24%) upon dealing physical damage. Tanky enemy? Black Cleaver.

Lord Dominik's Regards

Great Item for dueling tanks as it ignores 35% of the enemy's TOTAL ARMOR. Mortal Reminder can be used as a substitute for Lord Dom's if against healing champions due its ability to inflict grievous wounds onto enemies.

Maw of Malmortius

Maw is a great item against high burst mages and/or AP comps. The Lifeline passive grants a shield that absorbs magic damage and hence, reduces burst damage while the Lifegrip passive grants +10% life steal until out of combat. This means that you are able to fight on with the additional life steal or escape burst. Coupled with 10% CDR and the Lifeline passive Maw is great because you don't lose offense stats when building defense.

Mercurial Scimitar/Quicksilver Sash

This meta is nasty as a result of the tanks, the cc and the tanks with cc. It is a great item as it offers Life Steal, Attack Damage, Magic Resist and the removal of crowd control, however, it is entirely situational where:
You either: pick off or clean up -meaning that when picking off, crowd control removal isn't necessary and when cleaning up, the enemy's main ccs would have been burnt.
This means that if you need it, you're getting caught. and if you are, stop. Basically, BEFORE BUYING THE ITEM CONSIDER YOUR TIMING AND THE AMOUNT OF CROWD CONTROL THAT YOU CAN AVOID. If its a point click, low CD crowd control, then yea, get it.

Death's Dance

Death's Dance is a decent item for Rengar as it provides 80AD, 10% CDR and healing upon dealing physical damage and helps you survive burst better. However, I rarely by this because Guardian Angel is more reliable and gives better defensive stats.

The Bloodthirster

BT is a reasonably good item on Rengar as you get a shield and when coupled with Ravenous Hydra, it provides a lot of lifesteal. However, keep in mind that you are an assassin and lifesteal/sustain isn't necessary late game. If you need survivability, consider being patient or building a defensive item.

Defensive item Items
*Have fun losing all your damage*
Dead Man's Plate

If you're struggling against a high AD comp, consider buying this item as it gives health and armor. Furthermore, its passives: "Dreadnought" grants Momentum that increases your movement speed by 60 at 100 stacks while it's second passive: "Crushing blow" slows your enemy by 50%. As a result of its two passives and defensive stats, its a decent item for Rengar. Dead Man's synergises amazingly well with Duskblade's Nightstalker Passive and Sudden Impact from your runes.

Sterak's Gage

Sterak's Gage is a an exceptional item for bruiser Rengar because it grants 50% base attack damage as bonus AD. This means that you are not sacrificing as much damage for survivability. [/color]

Banshee's Veil

Offers more Magic Resist than Spirit Visage plus gives you a spell shield that blocks the next enemy ability. Generally buy this item against AP comps and/or Point-Click CC comps. You can always buy QSS/Mercurial Scimitar instead of this item for more damage.

Guardian's Angle

Basically buy this item when you cannot afford you die (Eg. When you have all the kills in your team) or when you're only trading 1 for 1 for a kill.

Randuin's Omen

SSW Dandy's trademark Randuin's + Youmuu's combo. Although the AOE Slow and Attack Speed reduction is decent, you are sacrificing damage as you are paying 2900 gold. Buy this item if you are struggling against a Crit+Auto attacking comp.
*ONLY BUY DEFENSIVE ITEMS IF YOU'RE NOT DOING TOO WELL OR WHEN YOUR TEAM IS IN NEED OF A TANKY ENGAGER*

AP Rengar (Why/When/How)

AP Rengar has been buffed MASSIVELY this preseason.

Why?

Runes give ADAPTIVE stats. This means that you START OFF with the same AD as AD Rengar, but as you buy AP Items, the ADAPTIVE stats turn into bonus AP.

What does this mean?

Your first few clears are basically as good as AD Rengar with no tradeoff to your AP stats.

Pros of AP Rengar
- Unexpected Burst (meaning that you can trick other players into building armor)
- Lots of healing/sustain
- Very good first clears

Cons of AP Rengar
- Bonetooth necklace gives AD stats (though it should be adaptive)

Items:
Skirmisher's Sabre Enchantment: Runic Echoes

- Skirmisher's Sabre alone is a wonderful dueling item, increasing your overall damage, while reducing the damage you take on smited champions
- It offers both AP and CDR, ensuring that the ADAPTIVE damage from your runes turn into AP, while increasing your gank potential as you can get your ult up faster

Hextech Protobelt- 01

Protobelt is by far one of the best items to get on AP Rengar.
- Stats granted (HP, AP and CDR) are very useful on AP Rengar
- It synergies with the Ingenious Hunter rune, that grants you 40% CDR on all active items DECREASING the dash active to only 24 seconds
- Allows you to reposition to secure kills better
- Increases your overall AOE and AP Burst .

Lich Bane

- A very good buy to enhance your single target burst due to the Sheen Procs
- Useful stats (AP, CDR and MS)

Mejai's Soulstealer

For the daring.
- ALWAYS get Dark Seal first, then Mejai's if you're SURE you can win
- Basically becomes a bone tooth necklace for AP Rengar
- Grants useful movement speed at 15 stacks.

Rengar Combos

AD:

CLEARING:
Fast Combo:
-Auto Attack
-Q
-Right Click slightly behind character model

(Recommended) I'm not good at naming stuff
-Activate Edge of Night (wait for the cast pls)
-Ult
-While jumping, cast your e mid air
-Upon landing, Fast Combo + W + Hydra
- This gives you 4 ferocity (1 from jumping into combat, 3 from abilities), cast Empowered whatever.

AP:
(Recommended) Roar of Death:
-Ult
-E mid air
-W + Auto Attack (For Lich Bane) + Q (auto reset)
- Empowered W

Weird Things

1. Because of Rengar's passive's 0.5 bush jump delay, you can do weird things. For example, if you Teleport in a brush to a minion/ward/tower, you can pounce onto an enemy unit.
