Introduction

|||||| >> Hi there! I'm Veng Lmfao, a Scout here at MobaFire!
I've played Udyr on & off since 2011, and I've stuck with him ever since. This is due to his incredibly fun and addictive play-style.
~ There are multiple reasons as to why I enjoy Udyr. I love how you can run around endlessly at a ridicolous speed, how you can become a hard-hitting nightmare or being able to withstand an onslaught of damage, and come out unscratched.
~ Although Udyr has been tweaked so that he excels as a jungler, I still enjoy playing him as a toplaner!

Pros / Cons

An Overview of Udyr
Proswidth=1000
+ Re-usable Stun
+ Strong Shield
+ High Sustain
+ Small Dash
+ Strong Pusher
+ AS + MS Steroid
||| >> Udyr is a very strong champion that relies on high sustain from Turtle Stance and is capable of dealing consistent damage with Tiger Stance. One of his core mechanics comes from Bear Stance. Being able to run around at an increased speed, whilst ignoring unit collision and being able to stun multiple targets is very satisfying. Udyr is very good at punishing people for even minor things, such as when your opponent comes in to take a creep. You are able to stun them with Bear Stance, deal some nice damage with Tiger Stance, then walk away before they can respond. He is also a very good splitpusher because of Tiger Stance.

Udyr's Limitations
>> As with all champions, Udyr has his limitations. Due to the nerfs to Turtle Stance, Udyr is no longer able to spam his abilities indefinitely. Because of this, you have to think more carefully about when to use your abilities. If your opponent gets an early lead on you, it can be difficult to catch up. It's hard to be aggressive to someone that will out trade you. Udyr is also quite repetitive. Using the same skills over and over in the same order can get boring quickly. Due to being a melee champ, Udyr can be kited easily (although Udyr has a dash on Bear Stance, you need to be practically standing next to them for it to come into action). Phoenix Stance is also useless early due to
Tiger Stance being superior.

Masteries, Runes & Summoner Spells

width=1000000
SPACE Runes:
>> Nothing new or out of the ordinary here. This rune setup provides a versatile mix of stats.
I've seen a few people run Hybrid Pen successfully, but it never felt right for me, flat AD is the way to go. You can opt for Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist if you are going up against an AD laner, but if you're playing blind pick and you're not sure, go with flat. Wouldn't recommend any other seals, Greater Seal of Scaling Health can work but Armor seals are superior.

width=1000000
SPACE Masteries:
>> The new Season 4 masteries have really benefited Udyr. You are able to utilize the defense tree to it's full potential, because everything works well with Udyr.
~ Nice boost to armor and magic resist from
~ Incredibly health bonus' from
~ Overall damage reduction from
~ Minor damage increases from

SPACE Summoner Spells:
>> Ignite + Flash is currently the most viable pick for Summoner Spells that I would recommend to you. Ignite raises your kill potential, whilst also being able to block healing orientated champions (such as Dr. Mundo, Vladimir, etc).
~ Flash is a no-brainer, as it will often aid you in getting kills or assisting you in escaping.
~ I'll always have a soft spot for Teleport. If you love being able to split push or teleporting in from the either side of the map and making a game changing play, try replacing Ignite with Teleport.

Ability Explanation

width=1

width=1
||| Monkey's Agility // Passive
>> This passive brings a lot to the table. A potential 30% increased attack speed and 15 movement speed benefits Udyr a lot. These benefits will work well alongside Tiger Stance and Bear Stance. The passive plays a main part in making Udyr superior in the jungle, due to the stacks being more effective and are used more efficiently.

width=1

width=1
||| Tiger Stance // Q
>> Your main offensive ability. This is what makes Udyr annoying to lane against. At level 1, primed with your AD Marks and Quints, you are able to maul your target and get a small head start. I love how you are able to continually poke your opponent. Even the passive will force your opponent to make a decision whether taking the creep will be worth the damage in return.

width=1

width=1
||| Turtle Stance // W
>> Nerfs to the sustain on Turtle Stance was the key downfall of top Udyr. You were able to sit and continuously spam any spell you wanted, regardless of the mana cost. You couldn't be touched, because Turtle Stance would be permanently up. However, it's still incredibly useful. Being able to reduce or even completely block damage is very helpful, with the added attribute of life steal.

width=1

width=1
||| Bear Stance // E
>> Your signature ability. Although it is a core mechanic, only 1 point is required for top. That 1 point gives you access to a movement speed steroid, unit collision removal, a small dash and a brutal stun. A key component of Udyr being such a fun champion is running around and being able to continually apply stuns. Bear Stance is amazing for chasing, escaping, getting back to lane, initiating a teamfight or a gank, etc!

width=1

width=1
||| Phoenix Stance // R
>> This ability excels in the jungle. Early game, it's pretty weak and useless. Sure, you may get some AoE clearing once in a while, but Tiger Stance is superior in almost every aspect with the build that we are using. I've seen Sunfire Cape // Ravenous Hydra // Phoenix Stance orientated builds for pushing and clearing, but they never work for the entire game. It always falls off at some point. Stick to Tiger Stance if you are going to be playing top lane.

Guide Top

Ability Order

width=1

width=1
||| Tiger Stance // Priority #1
>> Due to Tiger Stance being your main offensive ability, you'll want to max this first. This is because it scales very well early game and the damage it provides is very useful. The active attack speed also increases, which will further improve your clearing and pushing power.

width=1

width=1
||| Turtle Stance // Priority #2
>> You'll be wanting to max this second. Although the sustain it provides and the shield strength can be really powerful, you'll still want to be maxing Tiger Stance for the increased damage. If you start dropping behind and you've lost your aggressive edge, you can put a few extra points into Turtle Stance early to help increase your sustain and to help mitogate some of your opponent's damage.

width=1

width=1
||| Bear Stance // Priority #3
>> You'll be maxing this third. Only 1 point is needed in Bear Stance early as that 1 point will give you everything that you require from the skill. Putting extra points into it will only make you run faster, and unless you're trying to beat your opponent in the 100m sprint, there is no point in doing so.

width=1

width=1
||| Phoenix Stance // Priority #4
>> Lucky last. I don't put any points into this until I have nothing else to spend my points in. This is because it's for clearing waves. You can't sit in the middle of the lane and clear waves indefinitely, you'll get ganked and poked repeatedly. Not to mention that it requires 3 attacks to be effective and deals magic damage.

Items

width=1000

width=1000
SPACE Starting Items:
>> Doran's Shield and a Health Potion is my standard start. Great mix of health, health regen and damage reduction that combines well with Block and Unyielding .
~ An alternative to this start is Cloth Armor and 5x Health Potion, which provides a great armor boost and some really nice sustain from the pots.
~ If you're going up against an AP lane such as Katarina, you could opt for Null-Magic Mantle and 2x Health Potion. The increased magic resistance will help reduce some of your opponent's damage.
~ The only trinket I would advise is Warding Totem. It gives you some extra vision which allows you to push a little further, as you'll be able to spot a gank.

width=1000
width=1000
SPACE Early Items:
>> An early Vampiric Scepter is a great item that works well alongside Turtle Stance. It also builds into Blade of the Ruined King (or Ravenous Hydra if you'd like to build it).
~ Phage is an item that provides a variety of stats, such as health, armor and 2 movement speed passives, which are both very helpful for staying on the move. Phage will be built into Trinity Force.
~ Boots of Speed don't really need an explanation. They build into either Mercury's Treads or Ninja Tabi, depending on the enemy teams' composition.

width=1000

width=1000
SPACE Core Items:
>> Blade of the Ruined King is a very strong item. It provides a multitude of stats such as AS, Lifesteal, AD, %Damage and also has a slow. For the stats it provides, it is a very cost efficient item. The active is very useful when you are trying to reach someone with
Bear Stance but are just out of range. The slow will allow you to catch up.
~ Trinity Force is an old favorite of mine. What I love about this item is that you can always go back and be able to afford a small component as everything is roughly 400g. Once you pick up Sheen, Tiger Stance's damage really spikes. A well rounded item that contains a bit of everything.
~ Spirit Visage is probably the best magic resist item going around right now. It fits nicely into your item build as it'll increase your sustain from Turtle Stance and Blade of the Ruined King. The health and magic resist that it provides are both very helpful.
~ Randuin's Omen is a fantastic item. The armor and health that this item provides are a huge boost to your survival. The passive is good for when you are getting kited, as it'll allow you to catch up much easier. The active is also very strong. Being able to jump into a group of enemies and slow them all down with a single button can be very useful.

width=1000
width=1000
SPACE Final Items:
>> Is the enemy team relying heavily on (AP) burst damage / have a very strong initiation? Pick up Banshee's Veil, it will seriously reduce how much damage you take and will periodically block abilities.
~ Are you only just dying / do you need a mixture of both armor and magic resist? Pick up Guardian Angel. People will often switch focus because they think 'He has GA, no point pouring all of our abilities into him'.
~ Frozen Heart is an interesting item. You want to purchase it if the enemy team has multiple people that are reliant on attack speed. This could involve a bot lane consisting of a Nunu / Vayne. A 20% AS reduction is very significant and can really turn the game around.

width=1000
width=1000
SPACE Alternate Items:
~ Ravenous Hydra is inferior to Blade of the Ruined King for solo top Udyr in my opinion. Unless you want to be splitpushing for the entire game, I would advise Blade of the Ruined King.
~ Sunfire Cape is a very good item, but if you are going to build it, it must be a very early purchase. You should be practically rushing Sunfire Cape.

width=1000

width=1000
SPACE Boots // Enchantments:
>> Picking boots all comes down to the enemies team composition. If they have multiple AP champs and / or have lots of CC, pick Mercury's Treads. If they have lots of AD champs, pick Ninja Tabi.
~ For enchantments, I go with Enchantment: Furor for 95% of my games. This is because it really helps you to stick to your opponent and combines very well with the additional movement speed from Trinity Force and Bear Stance.
Whereas Enchantment: Homeguard just helps you to get back to lane quicker. Although it can be useful, I still believe that Enchantment: Furor is superior in most circumstances.

Gameplay

|||||| >> Now that we've learnt how to structure Udyr, it's time to move onto the technical part of this guide.
~ Lots of the stuff I'm about to tell you will be tips, nothing more. You'll have to go into a game, and practice the majority of this stuff yourself. You need to teach yourself through experience here.
~ Lots of this stuff you'll already know, such as farming, warding placements, buff timers, etc, but I'm going to cover them anyway, just incase you don't.

width=1

width=1
||| Last Hitting // Farming:
>> It is critical that you get your hands on as much gold as possible. A great way to steadily increase your gold income is by improving your last hitting. If you are solid at last hitting, you can really see the gold difference compared to someone who isn't so good at last hitting. Often you can find yourself hundreds of gold ahead of your opponent, due to their poor last hitting ability.
~ Udyr has a very easy time last hitting, due to Tiger Stance dealing bonus damage as a persistent effect. Udyr also has a nice, fluid attack animation in my opinion.
~ Not only is he good at last hitting, he is also good at pushing as he gains attack speed and deals increased damage when Tiger Stance is activated.

width=1

width=1
||| Harassment // Zoning:
>> Udyr has a very neat and very consistent harass combination. As your opponent (melee) moves in to take a creep, use Bear Stance >> Tiger Stance >> Turtle Stance and walk away. Using this simple yet effective method, you will be able to keep your opponent under your thumb. The lower they get, the more they think about leaving cs and an area is closed off to them because you're guarding it. This is called zoning. You are also able to freeze the lane this way.

width=1

width=1
||| Freezing the Lane:
>> 'Freezing a lane' is a term which means to stop the flow of minions. This is a critical mechanical to help keep the gold and experience in your favor. You typically want to freeze the lane just out of range of your tower, but close enough so that the enemy will have to overextend to get cs, leaving them prone to a gank.
~ To freeze a lane, get the enemy minions pushing towards your turret by last hitting as LATE as possible. For example, one of enemy minions is on 10hp, but it isn't being attacked by anything anymore. Do not kill it unless it is going to die, so it'll keep pushing. If you are last hitting as low as possible, then that lets the enemies' minions deal a little extra damage.
~ Once they are at your tower, keep last hitting them as low as possible so they keep dealing extra damage and keep pushing the lane.
~ This can also be a considered a form of zoning.

width=1

width=1
||| Jungle Pressure:
>> It is important to never give away a gank. Don't randomly get into a nice, aggressive position, as this will throw the gank off. Make sure you and your jungler are synergized in the initiation. Don't go in too early and don't go in too late.
~ Make sure that you communicate with your jungler. Even saying something simple like 'go' will give him the all clear to make the first move. A tip that I can give is when your opponent has to come close to you to take a cs. This way, he'll be more exposed than if he was waiting at the back line of his minions.
~ Open with Bear Stance and apply a stun. Combined with your junglers cc, you should be able to deal a nice amount of damage. Keep spamming Tiger Stance and give chase with Bear Stance. Remember, Udyr is a very good turret diver due to his natural tankiness and shield from Turtle Stance. He is also able to get out easily with the increased movement speed from Bear Stance.
width=1

width=1
||| >> As with any champion, you become prone to ganks if you play too aggressively and overextend. Ganking Udyr can be somewhat difficult, as he is able to easily slip away and take minimal damage. Unless they have a lock on dash, getting to Udyr can be pretty hard because as soon as you see the gank coming, you're spamming Bear Stance and getting out of there. Even if they do manage to get to you, they'll have to stack CC after CC to pin you down and get you. Just spam Bear Stance and Turtle Stance to avoid as much damage as possible.

width=1

width=1
||| Kiting:
>> Due to Udyr being a melee champion without a dash / blink, he can get kited pretty hard. This is where items such as Blade of the Ruined King & Randuin's Omen can be very helpful. As soon as you get into range to use Blade of the Ruined King, use it slow them down. Proceed to spam Bear Stance to get to your opponent, then activate Tiger Stance and attack them. From this combination you've slowed them, caught up to them, stunned them and have received the bonus movement speed from Trinity Force and Enchantment: Furor. Even using
Flash >> Blade of the Ruined King will help you to get into range to execute your sticking combo.

width=1

width=1
||| Map Awareness:
>> Map Awareness is a very important part of League of Legends. Being able to keep track of all 5 enemies can have a huge impact in every single one of your games. You should also know about the general whereabouts of the enemy jungler. If he's just ganked bot lane, then you know that you're free to push for a short window of time. If the jungler started at blue, you know that at
7:10 - ish he'll be going back to pick it up again.
~ Never blame your team for not calling MIA. It helps to hear the ping sound, but sometimes people forget. However, it's you that got caught out because you weren't paying attention to the map.
~ It's always nice to let your allies know where a ward was placed and when it will expire. No use your jungler coming through the tribush if you know it's warded. Let them know, tell them to focus on another lane for 120 seconds.

width=1

width=1
||| Vision:
>> It's also important to keep your lane warded. Having vision of an area greatly reduces the chance of a successful gank, whilst it also gives you a bigger area in the lane as to where you are allowed to extend to.
~ Remember to purchase 1-2 Stealth Ward's whenever you go back to maintain vision of the river / tribrush. Always remember to use your Warding Totem as well!
~ As stated above, it's always nice to let your allies know where a ward was placed and when it will expire. No use your jungler coming through the tribush if you know it's warded. Let them know, tell them to focus on another lane for the duration of the ward.

width=100
||| Synergy:
>> Udyr really shines when he has a brilliant team composition. Champions such as Lulu and Orianna are amazing to go alongside Udyr, as you can Bear Stance into the enemy team, knock them up with Wild Growth, then pull them back in with Command: Shockwave. This combination works on any tanky bruiser, but it's much harder for the enemy to react when an Udyr in Bear Stance is coming in so fast. Having an Ashe use Enchanted Crystal Arrow to stun and slow the surrounding opponents also adds to the chaos!
~ A great jungler to have with Udyr would be somebody like Jarvan IV. These 2 synergize so well. Udyr being able to easily stun your opponent, allowing for an easy Demacian Standard + Dragon Strike + Cataclysm combination.

width=1
width=1
||| Objectives: (Dragon // Baron // Turrets)
>> Because Dragon is a key objective, it is important to have some form of vision on it for practically the entire game. Dragon spawns at 2:30 and has a respawn time of 6 minutes. Even though Dragon is on the other side of the map, remember to inform your team about it.
~ Baron however, doesn't need to be warded until about 20 minutes into the game. Seeing a successful Baron before this is quite rare and isn't an easy accomplishment. Baron spawns at 15:00 and has a respawn time of 7 minutes.

width=1
width=1
||| Taking Camps:
>> If you've pushed your opponent to their tower and there is no use hanging around waiting for the lane to push again, go into your jungle and grab either wolves or wight. Alternatively, you can also go to their golem camp and take the big one (or the small one if you want to). This is a good way of generating a small amount of exp and gold whilst you wait.

width=1

width=1
||| Splitpushing // Waveclearing:
>> Udyr has a lot of potential to be a successful splitpusher. This is because he has a lot of attack speed from Monkey's Agility, Tiger Stance Blade of the Ruined King and Trinity Force. All of these combined lead to some very quick pushing indeed. Once you've pushed the wave deep or take out a turret, you are able to swiftly get away with Bear Stance. Udyr makes split pushing look so easy.
width=1

width=1
||| >> Not only can Udyr take out turrets very quickly, but he can also clear waves at a tremendous speed. As I stated above this is because he has a lot of attack speed from Monkey's Agility, Tiger Stance Blade of the Ruined King and Trinity Force.

width=1

width=1
||| Teamfights:
>> Udyr brings a lot to a teamfight. He has great peel from Bear Stance, he is able to absorb damage with Turtle Stance, can deal a heap of damage with Tiger Stance and just has a scary presence in general.
~ Combined with something like Whimsy + Wild Growth or Command: Protect +
Command: Shockwave, you can be a dangerous initiator. Using Bear Stance to gain increased movement speed, you can get into the enemy team quickly, use Randuin's Omen and combo your CC. Udyr is also great at sticking to a specific target, so pick up a threat, stun them periodically with Bear Stance and bully them out of the fight. An example can be found here.
~ Udyr can also function as a bodyguard, as you are able to stun multiple enemies and
Randuin's Omen + Blade of the Ruined King will assist in helping your ally kite away.
