Introduction

Welcome to the world of MANA-TANK KASSADIN.

This notion was originally introduced to me by Slygoat.
I've played about 1500 or so Kassadin games over the past 2 and half years.
I know the damage output, I know who can beat me, I know who I can beat, I know how to win almost every game with kass.

The original build proposed by Slygoat still had some AP in it.
I sort of slashed the AP because the math said that Mana-Tank Kassadin is better in all respects. I have revised the build to damn near perfection.

Runes

+10 Magic pen because you want that nice damage.
Once you get sorc boots, that's +30 magic pen and you're golden for early to mid game.

~600 mana at level 18 for maximum mana regeneration. Lategame, you will need a large max mana to maintain riftwalk stacks. Runes + masteries should get you to a good place.

Items

Think about how scaling works in LOL... When you level up, you gain about 50 damage per one ability. That's cute I suppose. Most people think that they need AP on kassadin to sustain his damage. Too bad they are all wrong.

Why I don't buy a blasting wand
Q and E scale as 0.7 * AP.

(+40 AP / 860 gold) leads to (0.065 magic damage / gold) spent.

R scales linearly per stack (+60, +90, +120).
If I were to buy a tear and max it, then I would have +1350 mana.
Doing the math on how many stacks you can reach (about 5), and summing up the damage you've done, we realize that you have done 15 stacks of damage! That means:

(15 stacks * 60 {dmg/stack} / 860 gold is (0.9 damage / gold)

WOAH HOLD UP?!?! Yep, the math speaks the truth, you are gaining about 1 damage per gold spent if you buy a tear of the goddess!

The lategame
You should have around 4.5k mana if everything goes well. You will have about 140 (or more) of each resist and a good chunk of health. You will at most have about 250 AP unless you buy some pots or have auras...

How does this even work then?
STACK YOUR ULTIMATE. Max = 10 stacks.
Damage per stack = 120 damage.
Max cooldown = 2.4 seconds.

-> The math for your damage output (assuming you start at 5 stacks on first jump into battle):

Null Sphere = (280 damage / (2 uses * 5.4 sec)) = 25 damage per second
Force Pulse = (280 damage / (2 uses * 3.6 sec)) = 70 damage per second
Riftwalk = (4800 damage / (5 uses * 2.4 sec)) = 400 damage per second

A simple approximation for your teamfight damage is about 500 damage / second
AP Kassadin's damage per time comes out to 385 damage / second
Let's compare mana-tank kassadin's burst damage to that of AP kassain (with 800 AP).

Mana-Tank Burst damage = (1200 + 280 + 280) = 1760 damage
AP Kassadin Burst damage = (280 + 0.7*800)*2 = 1690 damage


Pretty similar, so why not just play AP kass?
AP Kassadin's problems...
--> ****py survivability
--> May not have max cooldown
--> Runes out of mana quickly
--> Can't chase as violently
--> Can't tank AND carry
--> Generally can't carry lategame against competent teams


But isn't 10 stacks expensive
At 4.5k mana + chalice + blue buff something magical happens...
This magic is called...

800 mana regen / 5

That's enough to let you hit 10 stacks a few times and sometimes even sustain 10 stacks if played right. You don't run out of mana, hence you never stop dealing damage.

Mana-Tank kassadin... stack your ultimate, one shot their carry, two shot their mage, 3 shot their bruiser, 4 shot their tank.
