Not Updated For Current Season
The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
This is a guide to how I'm inclined to play Rammus. This is designed to be a balanced build, because I've seen all too many people play Rammus and only build armor, and proceed to get shredded by enemy casters.
Armor is very important for Rammus, hence the Marks and Wards of Resilience. MR is also an important stat to any tank, so Glyphs of Warding it is. Most people seem to use Fortitude for their Quintessense, and while I can see how useful those would be early-game, later on it wont have much use so I don't see the point. Quintessenses of Avarice are always useful though, and will accelerate the rate at which you can put your build together.
I like to start off with Cloth Armor and 2 health potions, which makes Rammus hit harder and lets him stay in his lane longer, plus it gets you on your way to your first core item, Aegis of the Legion.
Aegis of the Legion is a must have for any tank in my opinion. It boosts many important stats and most importantly makes your teammates tougher to kill too. Always a useful item.
Next up is Mercury Treads. MR isn't as simple to build up as Armor is, so this choice of boots gives us a nice little bonus to MR to help keep it in a reasonable range. Most importantly though, it gives you Tenacity, which is something that every champion should want. The time it shaves off of CC effects can save your life.
Next up is Thornmail, perhaps the most important item you can build on Rammus. It boosts your Armor by a huge amount, which means you hit harder too, but the thing that makes this important is the passive. The reflected damage means that with this item whenever you taunt an enemy, not only will you be hitting them but they will be hurting themselves while doing little damage to you.
Here is where the build gets flexible. I choose Warmog's Armor as my next item because for a tank, Rammus doesn't get a lot of HP naturally. Damage mitigation is nice, but HP will protect you from anything.
Wit's End may seem like an odd choice, but I build it for 2 reasons. 1) Our MR at this point is lagging behind our Armor, which is a little bit typical of Rammus but still could use fixing. 2) The extra magic damage and attack speed from Wit's End increases Rammus' damage output by a fair amount, which your opponents wont be expecting.
Finally Banshee's Veil, although you probably won't have time to buy it. The automatic ability counter is incredibly helpful. That's reason enough to buy it.
Point in Powerball first to help you harass early-game, but neglect it after that because it's really not that important. Taunt is Rammus' signature ability, and what makes him most dangerous so that is priority number 1. Then Defensive Curl is next because the damage reflection and added defense make Rammus a lot more dangerous in team fights.
