Hey guys, Snakebyte here(look me up on lol if you want) and i am coming to you with a guide to Renekton-the butcher of the sands. now, i am not the best player out there by far, and my elo is honestly not that good, I've even banned a couple of times, however, i like to think myself a good player and i have been playing league of legends since summer of 2010 and i think that qualifies me to make a guide. i have also been playing Renekton since he came out in January 2011 and i think that qualifies me to make a guide about him, especially with the new season here and one of the best changes i have ever wanted in league of legends has finally happened. i haven't actually played Renekton extensively this season due to lack of time on my hands, but what i have seen it a wonderful change and i much more fun and exciting game-play.

lets get to it.

A look at Renekton


Damage 53.12 (+3.1 / per level)-decent, though i wish it was a little higher base for last hitting creeps. still outdone by several other top champs-i.e. olaf
Health 426 (+87 / per level)-also decent, but with this build, you are never hurting for health
Mana 100 (+0 / per level)
Move Speed 320-moderate
Armor 15.2 (+3.8 / per level)
Spell Block 30 (+1.25 / per level)
Health Regen 6.7 (+0.75 / per level)
Mana Regen 0 (+0 / per level)

lets first get a general outlook of Renekton before we go into more details. he is a tanky melee fighter, who excells at jumping into a fight, dealing massive aoe damage, throwing out a few stuns, and dashing away, spamming /laugh.

his kit consists of an aoe damage and heal, a powerful single target nuke and stun, a short to long range dash, depending on the situation(we will cover all this in later chapters) and an ulti that makes him an unstoppable monster. pretty nice all in all.

as stated in the Renekton champion spotlight(see here> Renekton is a flow based champion. in order to master him completely, you need to know which order you want to use his abilities, when you want to use them, how to set up a good teamfight, and which abilities you want to charge with fury. all these are key to maximizing your power as Renekton.

Passive- Reign of Anger - Renekton gains 5 fury every auto attack he makes. at 50 fury, his abilities consume fury to become empowered and gain bonus effects. all fury gains are increased by 50 percent when you are below half health.

to be honest, a pretty bad passive. 50 percent more fury at low heath is pretty mediocre, and one thing i have always wanted on renekton is a better passive. this one is just, ugh.

q ability- Cull the Meek - Renekton swings his blade, dealing 60/90/120/150/180 (+0.8) physical damage to nearby enemies and gains 5 percent of the damage dealt as Health (20 percent for champions), up to 50/75/100/125/150. Enemy champions heal for 4x as much.

at 50 fury, Damage increased to 90/135/180/225/270 (+1.2). Heal percent increased to 10%, up to 150/225/300/375/450.

this ability is just fantastic. Renekton's bread and butter skill. it has a deceptively wide area of effect for damage and the heal is wonderful, although it can be a little low when you don't have fury to spend on it. however, at about level 3-6 doing a furious cull in the middle of a minion wave will heal you for 120-150. that's nothing to sneeze at, and in mid to late game team fights, a good furious cull will heal me for anywhere from 300 to 400 hp, that's HUGE for baiting, and the damage, furious or not, is awesome. not to mention granting you 5 fury per target hit, for fast stacking. as damage, sustain, and gaining the most from levels, i max this by level 9. no exceptions.

w- Ruthless Predator - Renekton's next attack strikes twice, dealing (10/30/50/70/90 + 150% of his Attack Damage) and stuns for 0.75 seconds. Each hit applies on-hit effects.

at 50 fury, Renekton attacks three times, dealing 2.25 physical damage (15/45/75/105/135 + 225% of his Attack Damage) and stuns his target for 1.5 seconds.

just like his q, great skill all around. this move just gives you so much. a high damage nuke that doesn't need ranking to do damage, a reliable stun on a low cool-down, and a double on hit stacking, which also gives you 10 fury, as it hits twice. at 50 fury, this move does pretty much the same damage as Rengar's empowered Savagery. the only difference is that this move trades lets say, 10 percent damage and a speed boost for a stun, either for another melee attack for first blood, or for a teammate to show up and an east gank to take place. while ranking this up doesn't increase the damage by a lot, it does great reduction on the cool-down, making it on par with slice and dice for maxing. with these two it's really a matter of preference, but i favor maxing the stun before the dash. there's no need to dash if they're all dead right?

e- Slice and Dice - Slice: Renekton dashes, dealing 30/60/90/120/150 (+0.9) physical damage. Hitting an enemy grants the ability to use Dice for 4 seconds.

at 50 fury, damage on dice is increased to 45/90/135/180/225 (+1.35). Enemies hit have 15/20/25/30/35 percent reduced Armor for 4 seconds.

as i mentioned above, this move can make or break a Renekton player. the most important aspect of this is remembering that YOU NEED TO HIT AN ENEMY FOR DICE TO BE AVAILABLE. simple as that. you hit no one, the dash is mediocre, you hit an enemy, great mobility. best part of this move for me is easily escaping ganks. just slice through the ganker, then dice to safety. while i did have a map of walls you can dash through, the stupid computer screwed me and i cant get it uploaded, so just use your imagination. if you think you can dash through it, you probably can. The The Black Cleaver gives me the armor pen i need, and since this gives the least damage from fury, since it only benefits dice, i generally avoid using fury on it, but once it's maxed, it deals some good damage to those unfortunate enough to be hit by both casts.

r- Dominus - Renekton surrounds himself with dark energies for 15 seconds, gaining 300/450/600 Health. While active, he deals 40/70/100 (+0.1) magic damage to nearby enemies and gains 5 Fury per second.

what can i say about this. wow. just wow. health for atmas and survivability, aoe damage, and more fury then you will ever need. wow.

on a final note for abilities please remember that when they cost fury, cull the meek and Ruthless Predator will not grant you fury. moving on.

im not a rune expert here, so i'll just tell you my runes and why i pick them

glyph of magic resist. flat magic resist is actually not the ideal rune here, since you will probably be dealing with melee classes early, magic resist per level is the better choice, i just haven't gotten around to buying them and i had these left over from my mid runes. but magic resist for blue is what i run

mark of attack damage- Renekton is pretty much all physical damage, and combined with the need for reliable last hits these are a must have.

Quintessence of movement speed- for any champion i do not buy a speed item for i use these, though i first found the magic working on my beefy solo tops.(Renekton, Darius, exc...) just for chasing and mobility all around they are fantastic. nuff said.

seal of armor- you mostly run into other melee bruisers as solo top as the meta stands today, so for trading well, armor is essential.

since i'm completley ignorant of how to copy my mastery tree into this box, i will do the best i can, please bear with me.

1 point Summoner's Wrath for increasing my exhaust power
2 points in Butcher for easy last hits and because it's so appropriate on Renekton
4 points in Fury because my build maxes cdr i need no cooldown masteries, and, like butcher, this is appropriate.
4 points in Deadliness for the simple ad it gives
i max Havoc and Expertise because they just make your damage go up
and 2 points in Brute Force 3 in Sunder and 1 in Executioner finish my offense

4 points in Durability for survival and some more atmas damage
1 point in Resistance and 3 in Hardiness bring me to the next tree and increase my top lane dueling potential
and finally my last point in the flat hp from Veteran's Scars

i'm just going to show you my items and why i pick them

Ionian Boots of Lucidity i use max cooldown reduction on Renekton as he wants to be constantly spamming skills, so these are essential.

The Black Cleaver FINNALLY!!! AN ITEM TO BUILD BRUTALIZER INTO THAT ISNT F****** GHOSTBLADE!!! my prayers have been answered, after 2 years, finnally and item for Renekton, Garen, and every other melee caster out there. health, damage, cooldown reduction, and armor shred, what more do you want? note, i sometimes build brutalizer and then make spirit visage before i finish this. it's up to you.

Spirit Visage i really like the change to this item. even though i ran this before they changed it, health, cooldown reduction, much more magic resist, and a buff to your self heals offf your q(thats 300 just became a 400) this item is a must have for me.

Frozen Mallet lotta love for this item, with it's buffed damage, 700 hp, and a slow on every strike, i reccomend this for almost any ad bruiser or offtank, Renekton incuded.

Atma's Impaler pretty simple, crit chance, which will hit squishies VERY hard, armor, and a massive damage boost, what's not to love?

Warmog's Armor while i do miss stacking this item, it's still very good, a thousand hp makes 15 more damage to atmas, and .3 percent of you max hp per second stacks unto the buff from Spirit Visage this should make you a true force to be feared.

Early Game

Renekton has a pretty standard early game. defend your jungle, help get golem or lizard if needed, then go to lane. last hit for the most part. unless you have over 50 fury do not do a single thing till they do. if you have 50 fury, use it on them every chance you can.

two important notes. harass becomes easiest at lvl 3, when you can slice through a minion wave to them, hit them with a furious ruthless predator for huge damage, cull for health, then dice back out. note number 2, always be careful of where you use call the meek, it can easily push lanes without meaning to if you catch minions, if you are pushing a lot, make sure to ward your river. even with slice and dice, you cant escape every gank.

Mid Game and Ganking.

in my opinion Renekton is strongest from levels 9-13. that is when you will be able to ulti, run around culling people for half their health, and walk away with a triple kill from any teamfight. by the time the first decent size teamfight breaks out, you should have your spirit visage and brutalizer, at least from the games i have taken part in. with Renekton, the most important parts of fight are two things, keep up your fury before the fight, either through harass or hitting minions, this will cause you to be able to open up with some huge damage, and always using your stun on the squishiest targets possible. a stun on the tank means nothing, stunning the Graves or Brand however, can put a fight way in your favor. if squishy targets are unavailable, try to find whatever is causing your own carries trouble and splatter it all over the rift.

Late Game

by now lets assume this is a positive situation. your team(purple) is ahead by a few kills, you have a positive score, you just finished your atmas impaler, and your team goes for baron. with you you've got a Varus Soraka Brand and Jax baron's got 1500 health, but then the enemy team shows up in the brush you warded. the enemy team is Lee Sin Rengar Lulu Graves and Diana you pick up baron, but rengar uses his ulti and hops on brand, you ult and jump on him with ruthless predator, and as brand is about to hit him with a nuke that would start world war 3, lulu hits him with hugeify, and knocks up your whole team, diana and lee sin jump on brand and kill him, but get caught by Varus's ultimate, and Rengar is quickly bursted down, diana draws jax in while shielded, but is caught in his stun, lulu slows you and jax with her Glitterlance but you slice in and with another ruthless predator, finish diana. but then lee sin hits you with his Dragon's Rage, and knocks you through jax, killing him. now you're outside of baron's cave, and the ad carries and supports go in a 2v2 while lee sin jumps on you with his sonic wave/resonating strike but he doesn't realize just how strong you are, your ulti just wore off, and the bonus health keeps you at about 2600 hp, and a furious cull feeds you another 100 hp while cutting off a chunk of his, you hit him with Slice and Dice to shred his armor, and with your black cleaver, his armor is worthless, and now ruthless predator is back up, you make quick work of him after that and jump back into the cave, you kill lulu and smash Graves with a cull and BOOM 2 for 5! you push to their nexus and win! while this may not be an entirely accurate fight, that is what i deem a successful outing as Renekton when things go your way.
