Introduction

A tank killing solo top off tank or a beefy ad heavy croc with great sustain. It's up to you. No matter which one of these build you pick, you're going to shred armor like the jaws of life (or in this case jaws of death).

This build for Renekton focuses on building AD rather than going for tankiness but incorporates it with bruiser items. The key aspect of this build is that you actually go solo-top or mid. I love Renekton as a solo-top champion because if played correctly has great sustain and dreadful damage for a person of his tankiness. The most core items in this build are Bloodthirster and Frozen Mallet. The mallet is one of my favourite items in the game because it makes you pretty beefy, gives some AD, and offers a permanent red buff, making escape for your enemies near impossible. Probably the most important thing to note abuot this guide is that it makes you a tank killer, giving you 35% armor pen from dice at level 5, 40% from Last Whisper another 15 flat armor pen from marks AND 10% more from our masteries.

If you're using this guide to build him as a mid carry and go AD over tankyness, however, your build will be significantly different, focusing on magic resistance, damage, and sustain. Don't bump Midnekton until you've tried it!

Getting to Know Your Fury Bar

Renekton's passive, Reign of Anger makes him use the fury mechanic that isn't very common in the league. Simply put, every auto attack gains you 5 fury (50% more if you're below 50% health) and can use his build up fury to power his attacks. Using it is just as simple, you can wait until you have at least 50 and then go in for harass with Slice and Dice (e), Cull the Meek (q), Ruthless Predator (w), Slice and Dice (e), or get 100 fury and go in for a much stronger harass with e,e,w,q. The only problem is is that if you wait until you have 100 fury to harass you're not going to do it as often. The other thing about his fury bar is that his abilities will gain some ad scaling, for example, when above 50 fury, Renekton's Ruthless Predator will go up to +2.25 per AD. Renekton is made to harass so try to do it as much as possible without pushing your lane.

Runes

The runes in this build are simply to exaggerate the "tanky but not tank" aspect of the build. The health from the quintessences help Atma's Impaler for more damage while giving him a huge edge early game, the attack damage obviously for more damage, and and magic resist + armor give him the durability edge.

The runes on the AD Midnekton build focus on dealing damage as well as a bit of tankiness because Renekton is a bruiser, of course. I've swapped the health quints for attack damage to give him an even stronger early edge against mages. At level three, with a 100 fury bonus, you'll burts and mage to half health with your combo or E,E,W,Q. They'll be too terrified to retaliate. Save your E for escape, however, if you're up against a mage with strong CC or sustain such as Swain Vladimir or Twisted Fate who can deal damage to you as you're backing off.

Masteries

The masteries in this build give Renekton durability along with a bit of bonus AD and more armor penetration to compliment. Remember, this build is going to let you ignore a huge chunk of an enemies armor with a full build plus another 15 from marks. Thats pretty close to true damage! If your going for more AD than tank, the 21/9/0 build is for you, paying more attention to damage and less to defence.

Solo-Top Items




The items in this build are a bit of what some pro's might recommend for Renekton and some others might not.

Let's start from the start. I begin the game with boots and 3 health pots. Both help if you're fighting a harass-heavy champion like Kennen, because you can heal back the damage or recall and get back to lane quicker with your boots.

Brutalizer is a good item for Renekton early-game because with it's armor pen, makes him basicly do true damage to anyone who isn't building armor, not to mention the CDR and attack damage. But I would rather go for more sustain and just about the same amount of damage with double Doran's Blades. After building either merc treads or ionian boots, I grab an early Phage and rush Bloodthirster.

Hexdrinker comes next and I leave it at that until I build it into a Maw of Malmortius later in the game. For now, I want to finish that Frozen Mallet and build a typical bruiser item, Wit's End. While Renekton isn't exactly renowned for his auto attacks, he's gotta do something while his combo is on cooldown in a team fight!

Now we can finish the maw and buy a Last Whisper. I get this item last because I really don't need it all that much for the majority of the game. It's a bit of overkill, although very helpful. Renekton has enough armor shred to not need it for a lot of the game, but eventually, in long games, people will start building armor to combat you and you need to get rid of that nuisance. Guardian Angel is also a reliable item for late-game, so don't be afraid to sell one of these for some extra resistances and a second chance in a fight.

Solo-Mid Items



So, you're probably wondering something. I think I know what it is. "Solo-mid Renekton? Are you insane??". Nope! Talon serves as a good solo-mid because he counters mages with his gap-closer and silence. Well, Renekton can be played fairly similarly. He has a gap closer that can be used twice in a row if you use it through the minion wave, a form of cc that also does damage, and one more spell to hit you with before he backs off. Play aggressively, but play defensively, as well. This can be accomplished quite well. If you build the proper MR items like Mercury's Treads and Maw of Malmortius, Renekton, even though he's melee, can back off from his harass very easily and take minimal damage from whatever they throw at you as you back off.

Lets begin with the simple boots and pots. From here we want to emphasize sustain and damage because Renekton is at a bit of a disadvantage in mid because of his being melee.After this we get a Hexdrinker and leave it at that for a bit while we build Bloodthirster. Now it is time to finish Maw of Malmortius and buy a Frozen Mallet.

There aren't many more items we can get here, so let's let get that late-game survivability item, Guardian Angel If the game has lasted this long, there's a decent chance that the next team fight will decide the winner of the game. With Guardian Angel, you have the added bonus of having not one, but TWO (count em'), TWO crocs on your team!

Abilities and Ability Sequence

Reign of Anger (Passive): This passive is not unique to Renekton, while it is fairly uncommon among most champions. Every time you hit an enemy unit (excluding turrets) you gain 5 fury. Your fury goes all the way up to 100, and when you have 50 or more, your next ability use has an empowered effect. Utilize this by harassing only when you have 50 or more fury.

Cull the Meek (Q): Cull the meek is Renekton's most used ability, which can be used for adding to your fury bar by hitting a large group of enemies and also healing. While by looking at the abilities, Cull the Meek appears to be Renekton's main source of damage. However, while empowered with fury, his stun, Ruthless Predator actually does more damage because its ad scaling ratio rises to 2.25 per attack damage. It's best to level this first in most cases (especially if you're having trouble in lane) because it gives a LOT of sustain and aoe damage. The damage on Cull the Meek is 60/90/120/150/180 (+0.8 per bonus AD). With 50+ fury, it's 90/135/180/225/270 (+1.2 per bonus AD). The healing is also capped at 50/75/100/125/150, but with 50+ fury, is 150/225/300/375/450.


Ruthless Predator (W): Ruthless predator is what makes Renekton such a great burst damage dealer. An interesting ability, upon activating your next basic attack strikes twice (thrice with 50+ fury) and applies a stun. I level this last because although it's an amazing ability for harass, it's damage is very weak when you don't have fury, so if you're forced to fight when below 50 fury, you're missing out on a lot of damage. This can easily occur before a team fight. The damage on [{Ruthless Predator at first glance appears to be very weak, however, keep in mind that this is per hit (and with 50+ fury hits 3 times). 10/30/50/70/90 (+1.5 per attack damage) and with more than 50 fury is 15/45/75/105/135 (+2.25 per attack damage). The reason the damage on his is so high is because the scaling is ridiculous.



Slice and Dice (E): Slice and Dice is a short-ranged dash similar to Graves' Quickdraw. You can use it to jump over small walls, and can be cast a second time if the original use hit an enemy. I level it second while tpobecause it actually does more damage than Cull the Meek and shreds armor when empowered with fury. The damage on this spell is 30/60/90/120/150 (+0.9 per bonus attack damage), and with 50+ fury is 45/90/135/180/225 (+1.35 per bonus attack damage). It is VERY important to note that the second cast of Slice and Dice (dice) will do 50% more damage, and when you have 50+ fury will shred your targets armor for 15/20/25/30/35%!


Dominus (R): Renekton's ultimate ability. When activated it instantly gives you 300/450/650 health, deals magic damage to all near-by enemies, increases Renekton's size and range (by a very little bit), and makes you generate fury per second. It's a life-saver. The instant grant of health can trick someone into tower diving you or be used in team-fights and 1-on-1 fights for extra damage. The only thing I don't like about this is that it scales off of AP rather than AD because let's face it, that would be OP and cool as hell. Here's the details on it's damage. Magic damage per second: 40/70/100(+0.1 per ability power). Maximum magic damage: 600/1050/1500 (+1.5 per ability power).

My skill sequence for Renekton is all about burst damage and tank killing. The way a Renekton will come at you is with his e, then w, then q. Renekton is more dependant on his abilities than auto attacks, and has a decent disengage. I take a point in everything by lvl 3, so that I can begin the much stronger harass. Wait until you have 50 or even 100 fury, use Slice and Dice to close the gap, once more to reduce their armor, and proceed to deal damage with Ruthless Predator and Cull the Meek just as you're leaving.

I level Cull the Meek first because it offers great sustain and damage, much like Vladimir's Transfusion. Slice and Dice, however, is second because while it does good damage and reduces armor, scales off of bonus AD. I level Ruthless Predator last because even at rank one it has the potential to through out some decent damage and you won't be losing out on all that much damage without it fully charged.

Important Things to Remember...

Renekton is squishy early game, so don't commit to fights if your abilities are off cool down or you don't have a clear advantage. Your ultimate is a free summoner heal and does significant damage. It has a fairly small cool down so use it when our engaging the enemy when going in for a kill. It's short not 10 seconds, don't use it to harass. Just because you're tanky doesn't mean you're invincible. When laning at early levels, build up your fury and use it like Rumble's Flamespitter. By this I mean use it to hurt enemy champions while still farming. You wont have the full armor penetration if you dont cast Slice and Dice a second time through your target without more than 50 fury. Without using abilities, you have 40% + 10% + 15 armor pen.

Summoner Spells

Like many other champions, Renekton has many summoner spells that suite him and his role as the solo-top. At the top of this page I have Teleport and Exhaust, a combo I feel suites him well because you can quickly defend a lane that's being pushed, get to a team fight and move around the map quickly. Here's a list of summoner spells, along with how they work with Renekton.



Flash: A popular summoner spell amongst all champions and possible the best one in the game. However, it's not one I often grab on someone like Renekton who has Slice and Dice. A good summoner spell for Renekton and for all, but IMO, not the best for Renekton.

Exhaust: Another widely used summoner spell, especially by AD carries and damage dealers. One of my favourite summoner spells, it lets you chase down enemies or surprise them by using it in a 1-on-1 situation to give you the upper hand. As a solo-top I see little choice other than to use it as one of your spells.


Ghost: Renekton is a very good chaser, and as soon as you start winning your lane people aren't going to be very keen on the idea of fighting you. So, what do you do? Chase that bastard down and kill em! Not only does it help close the distance between you and your enemy but is also a great escape tool. Completely viable and useful on Renekton.


Teleport: This is one of my favourite tools on Renekton or any other solo-top because it makes you more mobile. I like to have at least one person on the team with it because it can quickly get you to a turret which needs defending, a team-fight or any other place you need to be (Ex. Teleport to a ward near Baron to help your team get it). It's also difficult to interrupt and has a cast-time shorter than recall. Teleport is possibly one of the best summoner spells in the game because it's a huge counter-gank. Always roll with one teleport on your team for improved map-control.


Ignite: This is a very commonly used summoner spell used for extra damage or securing kills. A good choice and a viable option for Renekton who has no form of dots or ranged attacks. A considerable replacement for Teleport for ganks that hurt more.

Heal: A useful summoner spell for anyone, but unnecessary for Renekton because his ultimate is pretty much a free summoner heal. Again, you could use it to heal everyone and play support Renekton, or you can ulti run into the enemy team and slice everyone to bits.

Cleanse: Cleanse is a decent summoner spell which can be used to counter opponents with hard CC or to remove Ignite along with all other debuffs placed on you. Try not to get it unless you absolutely need it.

And don't take Clarity Promote Revive or Clairvoyance.

Trinity Force

Trinity Force, at first glance, is an amazing item for Renekton. Not only is it built from Phage (a good early game for him), through it's unique ability to upon using an ability enhance the damage on your next attack, have a much stronger Ruthless Predator. Althought using this item would require you to level your abilities differently. The reason I've never used this item on Renekton is because you're pretty much paying for too much stuff you don't need. You want the extra damage from it, but Renekton really doesn't need extra mana or ability power. Feel free to include it in your build and tell me how things went.

Team Work

As an off-tank, you're the initiator if your team doesn't have a proper tank. An appropriate way to do this is as soon as you see a squishy get a few feet away from the rest of his/her team, slice into range, use your burst combo (e,w,q) and then activate your ultimate ability. Try to remember to use Cull the Meek and Slice and Dice in the middle of the fray, and stun threats to your AD carry.

Summary

In conclusion, Renekton is a fairly simple champion if you're using the correct strategy. The difference between a good Renekton and a bad one is massive, and there are a whole lot more bad Renekton out there than good. He has good harass and like his brother Nasus, a pretty strong late-game. Only play him as as a solo top or solo mid (building Force of Nature if you're getting beat in lane which won't happen). I saw someone jungle as him once. Didn't go that great for him.
