Not Updated For Current Season
The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
READ ME FIRST!
Welcome! This is my first guide. Ever. For anything. Riven is a champion I am extremely excited about. I have played roughly 15 games as her in the first days of her release. This is the build I found to be most effective. It is by no means the only way to build her. Just what I feel has worked quite well. Bear in mind I am just starting this guide and will be adding updates to it over the next few weeks or so. Right now it is just going to be a quick reference.
Logic behind my build!
Max CDR - Riven will rely on spamming her abilities to be effective. Her Q and W are your bread and butter.
~300 AD - Riven scales well with AD. It affects all of her abilities. This needs to be stacked, but survivability need to be accounted for as well. This seems to be a fair amount of AD and I do well with this number.
High HP Pool - I personally have yet to find an effective way to build Riven with magic resist and armor that doesn't gimp her output or role in the team. So I went with a high HP pool and using items that would allow her AD to benefit from that. If you play her correctly you will find yourself arriving slightly late into team fights and surprising or flanking the enemies. Just avoid being focused. Surprise is your key to success. If you can master that, her HP pool with this build will be more than sufficient. Many champions will have issues dropping you from 4k HP. This build does offer a bit of armor. Hopefully your team composition will consist of a good support and tank that have aura based items and abilities to make up for the lack of defenses.
Spell Vamp - Riven will be using her abilities. A LOT. It is ridiculous. Lifesteal is lackluster on her. She isn't an auto-attacking AD carry like Trynd or Yi. You will probably never be stacking attack speed on her either. Lifesteal doesn't bring the same returns to the table as Spell Vamp does. Because the majority of her attacks are AoE/Cone based, the more targets hit, the more health is returned on ability use. It gives her sustain in team fights and durability in lanes.
*Riven excels in team fights. Her abilities are all AoE/Cone based. The more targets you can hit, the better. You are there to whittle the team down and disrupt their escape. I have had the most success letting the tank initiate and the hard carries chop the team down then run in and finish them off. Her ultimate is proof of this play style. It does more damage if the enemies have less health. Think of her as a supportive AD carry.
Greater Mark of Desolation x 9 - Armor Penetration
Greater Seal of Might x 9 - AD scales extremely well with Riven, it is her bread and butter. This gives you a nice boost to that.
Greater Glyph of Celerity x 9 - Riven is a champion I feel must have her CDR CAPPED!
Greater Quintessence of Swiftness x 3 - Aids Riven in chasing, escaping, and early harassment.
