I too have played several hundred games as Ryze and have taken the time to build a guide myself. I'm not going to vote down yours because I prefer to spark a discussion about these points; that said, I disagree with many of the points made here from your choice in boots to your selections of masteries, runes, and summoner spells.

Point #1: Both builds are severely lacking in early game MPen. Building a Void Staff is a great way to finish off tougher opponents, but lacking any magic penetration from Sorcerer's Shoes means that your damage output is severely lacking in the midgame. I understand that you become slightly tougher to kill by taking the Merc. Treads, but you're lacking the killing power to sustain and win your lane. +4 mpen from your Quints top won't do anything if they pick up a Negatron Cloak or a Wit's End. Being able to outlast your laning opponent isn't helpful if you're getting ganked to death.

Which brings me to Point #2: There is no real reason that Ryze should unconditionally take Ignite. In fact, I prefer Ghost in every situation (except against healers like Swain) because Ghost is so much more versatile than Ignite. Your CDs are so short that popping Ghost should be enough to get you that kill with the added bonus of being useful to escape from ganks. This selection brings better ganking avoidance to playing Ryze without sacrificing any killing power. Definitely an upgrade. Read the description of the optimal time to use it in the gameplay section of my guide and try it out (make sure to adjust your masteries when you do!); I can't imagine you going back.

Point #3: Ryze practically relies on having Greater Seal of Scaling Mana Regeneration. If your jungler is blue buff reliant or your opponent's jungler manages to steal an early blue buff away, you will have a very difficult time both sustaining your lane and building up your tear. Again, many of my points come to lack of killing power, and having an un-stacked tear is the fastest way to deal less damage than a melee minion or lesser wraith.

Point #4: I also prefer the flat mres Greater Glyph of Magic Resist to the scaling variant of Shielding. Early game is where Ryze is at his most vulnerable. Especially vs an AP-reliant opponent, having the scaling runes mean nothing if you are being zoned, outfarmed, and out leveled. This one is certainly a choice in preference, but my feeling is that you should take Greater Glyph of Mana if you're not worried about the mres because that helps out your lane sustain and damage output. If you ARE worried about the little extra mres provided by the scaling runes over the flat ones, just buy a Quicksilver Sash or Force of Nature to compensate late game if they have a double AP setup and they are both fed.

Point #5: Only get Thornmail if the opponent's ADC is both fed AND heavily reliant on auto-attacks.

Point #6: Don't fall into the trap of believing that RoA isn't useful as a situational 6th item just because you may or may not be able to fully stack it up. Even UNSTACKED, Rod of Ages provides the single greatest quantity of additional mana. The only other item that comes close is Frozen Heart, and everyone already knows to build that. With the buffs to Ryze's AP ratio on Overload, RoA is the single most stat-efficient item available which makes it a very solid choice in making a final selection. WotA is wholly useless if you're up against a team full of silencing, suppression, pop-up, or stunning moves; conversely, the extra HP provided by RoA helps you survive through that first round of disables and have the opportunity to prevail.

Lucky #7: I love your 9-2-19 mastery setup... in specific situations. Having your summoner spells more readily accessible from Mastermind is way more valuable than +4 mres in almost every single matchup. I only take this setup (actually 9-3-18... I only take 2 points in Intelligence ) when facing unbelievably tough lane opponents like Cass or LeBlanc because they can bully Ryze into submission so early that he never gets into the game. Again, only take that vs Cass or LB, and ffs you'd better be taking flat mres runes against them or you'll never be able to farm.

Wow, I didn't mean to write that much but once I got started there seemed to be no reason to stop. I took the time to read your entire guide, so please return the courtesy before responding to my comment. Cheers.

In the optional items you see a Rod of Ages. it's a really good item, but you have to get it pretty early to make the most of it, and rushing RoA is not a good idea because ryze needs other items then that he needs more(glacial shroud, Catalyst the Protector).

I'm glad you question actually is a good one.
In the early days i mostly got 1 or 2.
It's a good snowball item though.

Better now, +1
Skill usage is correct.
I see how to lasthit and how to ward. That's very good, but this information is the same for every champion. And this is Ryze guide. I don't mean you should remove it, but this section makes me lose a feeling that I read about Ryze. Ypu should compensate it with information about Ryze, for example, how he handles some champions(aka who you can face on mid/top). Improvements, improvements.
Midlane warding - fix the picture position.
Good job already. :)

I am not going to vote because in my opinion this is a build order, not a guide. Tell me when you improve it. :)

i also agree with 1st poster. putting wards in the actual build clutters the build order and makes it harder to read. i think it's better to jsut make a warding section specific to mid and top lane, because in reality, i buy 2-4x that many wards whenever i go mid for sure in any given game.

Thank you very much HackUser for you comment + vote.
I'd should take a look to clean up the build, but my intention was to give all of you a quick overview of the purchase order.
