Who are you?

Introduction

- About Me -

Hey there! My name is Nick (Scorrpo). I am a Gold 5 player I've always played Ryze, every since I started playing the game early season 3. This is my FIRST Mobafire guide, so I hope you enjoy it!
- My Opinion -

This is MY way to play Ryze. So before you go flip a table because I explained why I like to buy Warmog's Armor instead of Rabadon's Deathcap, make sure you realize that this is how I like to play Ryze, and I wanted to show you how I do well, so you could maybe learn the champion. Also, I am not a pro player like Dyrus, I still have much to learn!
- What Will I Learn? -

In this guide, you will learn everything from how to play Ryze, to what runes / masteries are best for him. I am trying to include as many pictures and notes as I can in this guide, so you can learn your very best. Also, leave advice (NOT RAGE) if you disliked something I did, maybe I will learn a thing or two.

Who is Ryze?

Ryze

Ryze's Gameplay

Ryze is a late-game carry that excels at the top and (sometimes) mid lane. He can be played as an AP bruiser, (this build), which is most common, but also is seen being played as an AP carry. He is very limited with range on his skills so he works better top because most of the time you are versing a melee champion.

Ryze is a basic champion making him playable for all levels, 1-30. He has no skill-shots which helps new players focus on other things like farming, warding, zoning, etc. He's also very good for high leveled play because you can use his skills in certain combo's to deal tons of damage and peel for a carry in teamfights.

The AP Quint is pretty self explanatory, helps you do big damage early on and will just be a better quint than the others.

I use this glyph for the late game MR that you might need. If you are vs an AP champ top, you can of course replace this with Greater Glyph of Magic Resist.

This seal is for the armor you need when vs the AD champion top. If vs an AP champ, swap these for a Greater Seal of Scaling Health or Greater Seal of Scaling Armor.

These marks are used to have the magic penetration that we don't get to build a lot of, it fills in for what we are missing.

Defense Tree

Tier 1 : Having two points in Block , Recovery , and Enchanted Armor helps early game to make their auto-attacks not do so much and so we can progress down the tree.

Tier 2 : Veteran's Scars is a great mastery for early game health that could potentially change the outcome of a skirmish level 1 or 2.

Tier 3 : Juggernaut is again for the health. Hardiness and Resistance are very good masteries to have maxed out. It's free armor and magic resist.

Tier 4 : Swiftness is kind of like tenacity. It will reduce any slows that they use, and is good for Ryze because he doesn't build too much tenacity.

Tier 5 : Legendary Guardian can help in teamfights. Runic Blessing is very important. It will scale with that +36 health we got from Veteran's Scars , and help you early game levels 1 and 2 to secure the first blood.

Tier 6 : For the 21st point we got Tenacious , we need to get it plus it's another tenacity boost because we don't buy any of it.

Offensive Tree

Tier 1 : Four points in Sorcery are vital for Ryze. The extra cooldown reduction goes a long way. One point in Butcher will help with his AA and last-hitting, since it's difficult to master.

Tier 2 : Three points in Mental Force help with having a bit more AP at level 18, which will help with his tanky build.

Tier 3 : Arcane Mastery is a big boost of AP. Six more AP at level one just for one point of mastery is great, and will help out when poking early on.

Skill Sequence & Explanation

Skills

Ability Sequence

We are going to level and max Ryze's Q, Overload, first. This is because at level one you can poke and harass the enemy laner a lot with the low cooldown it has (more in-depth in the Gameplay section). Next, we are going to get level and max his W, Rune Prison. This is because the more points you have in rune prison the more damage and the longer the snare lasts. After, of course, we are going to level and max E, Spell Flux. This is a more late-game spell for easy AOE damage when combined with your ult in teamfights. Level your Ultimate, Desperate Power at levels 6, 11, and 18 like most champions. More in-depth skill definitions below.

Arcane Mastery
Ryze's passive is very important for his combo's and to secure a kill. What it does is that whenever you cast a spell, another spell that's on cooldown will have that cooldown reduced by 1 second. An example would be, say you have Q on cooldown and it's at 3 seconds. Then you use your E, and the cooldown would reduce down to 2 seconds.

Overload
Ryze's Q is a low-cooldown, hard hitting ball of electricity. Like most of Ryze's skills, this skill has additional damage based upon Ryze's maximum Mana. This skill also gives passive cooldown reduction, which helps because we don't build full CDR.

Rune Prison
Ryze's W is a snare. The higher that you level it, the longer the snare lasts, going up to a total of 1.75s. Like his other skills, this skill does additional damage based upon his maximum Mana.

Spell Flux
Ryze's E is a ball of electricity that bounces from enemy to enemy to deal damage up to 5 times. The ball can also bounce off of Ryze, which is important for when there are no minions near by. Targets hit by this ball have their MR reduced, and this has additional damage based upon maximum Mana.

Desperate Power
Ryze's R, or ultimate, is like a steroid. He gains Spell Vamp and flat Movement Speed. All of his spells turn into AOE damaging 50% of the damage of the skill to enemies in a 200 unit radius around the skill. This is a great skill to use with his E for clearing creep waves, because the E will bounce around and do AOE damage.

Skill Combinations

Skill Combos

Now that you know what Ryze's skills do, it's time to learn some combos on him! Ryze's passive gives him a lot of possibilities when it comes to combos, so I'll list some that I use and that are successful to me!

Combo 1: Double Q
This is an easy combo with Ryze that deals a good amount of damage, and can be combined with other combos.
> >
Combo 2: Triple Q
This is just like the Double Q but after using the second Q, you E and then Q again.
> > > >

Combo 3: AOE
This one is for dealing massive amount of AOE damage, will most likely delete anyone that tries to hurt you too.
> > > >

Combo 4: The Smash!
This one is for when you aren't expecting someone and start to panic and they need to die! (*Note: this combo is very complex and you can just smash your keyboard with your head as an alternative for it.)
> > > > >

Combo 5: EZ Mode
Easiest Ryze combo out there, you can even say it's as easy as 1, 2, 3! (literally)

Sorcerer's Shoes - Homeguard 1550
Rod of Ages 2600
Seraph's Embrace 2900
Frozen Heart 2500
Will of the Ancients 2300
Warmog's Armor 3100

Start of Game When first spawning, make sure to pick up a Sapphire Crystal and Health Potionx2. When you first back, get a Tear of the Goddess. This is important to get first so you can stack it while laning. Afterwards, buy a Boots and a catalyst the protector.

Core Items After you have a tear, catalyst, and boots, build that catalyst into a Rod of Ages. This will give you more time to stack your tear. Then start building a Glacial Shroud which will turn into a Frozen Heart. After these two items, (RoA and FH), are built, turn that tear into an Archangel's Staff. Also, upgrade your boots. With your core items built, we can move on to the next step.

Stitutional Items You need an AP and Defensive item now. I personally like to go Will of the Ancients and Warmog's Armor. This is a good combo because you will have so much health and the spell vamp will stack with your ult to get all that health back. You can also go Spirit Visage or Banshee's Veil instead of warmogs if they are very AP heavy. I've seen people go Rabadon's Deathcap and Deathfire Grasp instead of WoTA, and sometimes it works, but that's just personal preferance.

Gameplay

Game Phase

Early Game
When you first walk into the lane, you should protect your teammates red or blue, whichever team you are on. At around 1:45 time, drop a trinket ward in the bush that reveals the buff just in case the enemy jungler want's to steal it. Level one you should poke the enemy laner. Hopefully you are vs. someone melee so this should be a breeze. If you can get the enemy below 300-400 health and you level up to level 2, get your W. After this, Q > W > Q > Ignite for an easy first blood (you may have to flash to get all the skills in, and that's okay). If you can't get first blood just farm and poke until you have enough for Tear of the Goddess, Boots, and a Sapphire Crystal. Remember to buy Vision Ward whenever you go back!

Mid-Game
During this stage of the game (20-30 minutes), try to get your Tear of the Goddess to full stacks and make sure you have all 3 necessary items, Rod of Ages, Archangel's Staff, and Frozen Heart. By now you should have 150+ farm. Remember, farm is more important than kills, and deaths impact a game more than kills do. Those two things are what helped me get through ranked and get to gold. Stay with your teammates, and try to secure objectives like towers, dragon , and make sure to ward. Vision on the map will save lives more than you realize.

Late-Game
Late game is around 40+ minutes. This is when Ryze really has his true potential. You are definitely going to want to start trying to contest baron nashor , because that buff is a huge threat, especially in lower ELO's. By now you should definitely have over 250 farm, and with all that you will have full build, or close to it. If you haven't already which you should have, group up with your team and start taking towers. When Ryze is with four other teammates, he's hard to kill which allows you to dish out a ton of damage. You will probably win most of the team-fights if you have good farm, and didn't feed hard.

Team-Fights
When team-fighting, pay attention that you have all 5 teammates. Peeling for the ADC is VITAL to winning a team-fight with Ryze. If anyone jumps on that ADC, you better be unleashing all hell on that champion. It's up to you to kill them, because you are the hypercarry. If you just peel for the ADC all fight, you will most likely win the fight. Now what if your ADC is not fed? Peel for the mid-laner! You can really peel for anyone with Ryze. (*Note! Peeling is CC or trying to take the enemy (peel) off of the person that they are killing. Ryze is good at this because of how hard he can burst.)

Thank YOU!

Thanks For Reading

Thank you SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much for reading! If this build honestly helped you, please leave a +1, I will love you forever. Leave any comments that you have in the discussion section, and I will reply to them right when I see them. I'm only 13 14 years old and I have terrible grammar so please if you see a mistake in my grammar just tell me so I can fix it.

I'll add onto this guide as I play, and also if you guys do good with this build send me a picture of your success and I'll post it up on here if you would like! Again, thanks for helping! Also, check out the links below, if it weren't for them this guide wouldn't be any good at all!

Thanks to jhoijhoi's Making a Guide guide for helping me with this!
Credits to Bloodfyre's Kayle Guide because I took his masteries idea and made it into my own.
