NEEDS A LOT OF REWORK CUZ OF THE PATCH, THANKS FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING
Hello and welcome to my first Guide here on Mobafire featuring Wukong the Monkey King.
First of all i want to say that english is not my native language, so there might be some grammar or spelling mistakes in this guide, but of course i still hope it wont distract you too much. Take your time reading this guide and please leave a comment if you up/downvote me. Also feel free to ask me. ( Everything that is written in this guide comes from my long play experience with Wukong)
Since the first time i played Wukong, i felt in love with his Playstyle, so i tried to figure out how to build him, maximizing his full potential. I also want to share some thoughts and tactics with Wukong, because hes very underrated and may be considered as weak champion by some players. I also did my first Pentakill with him on a ranked game
(sadly i didnt record it) and this was the moment when i decided to make a guide.
Ok but now without talking too much , lets get started
For all those who are first time playing Wukong i strongly recommend the champion spotlight provided by Riot games. Basically because its a great addition to this guide.
During the chaos of the Rune Wars, an enormous runestone was lost deep within the Plague Jungles. It remained there, untouched for centuries, emanating a potent magic which infused nearby wildlife with sentience and vitality. A group of monkeys who were particularly empowered by it came to worship the stone, and their leader - a wise sage - became convinced that he could harness its power to make the monkeys immortal. He performed an elaborate ritual, but things didn't go as he expected. The runestone was destroyed, and instead of granting immortality, it produced Kong, a monkey who carried in his heart the strength and power it had contained. Kong was driven by an unquenchable desire for greatness. He sought out every beast and monster the Plague Jungles could offer, eager to find a worthy opponent, but none offered the challenge he craved. He asked the sage for advice, and learned about a legend of hairless monkeys to the north who, with wits and might, had bent the world to their will.
Wukong left, journeying north, determined to discover if the legend was true. He crossed the Southern Wastes and then the Great Barrier. On his way, he happened upon Master Yi, who was deep in meditation. Kong asked him who the strongest warrior in the north was, and Yi told him about the League of Legends. The tale intoxicated Kong, a place where he could battle the strongest fighters in the world was, to him, paradise. Kong asked Yi to introduce him to this League, and to teach him the ways of humans, so that he could be a fitting champion. In return, he would honor Yi by using Yi's Wuju Style to become the greatest warrior Runeterra had ever seen. Admiring his passion, Yi agreed, but under the condition that Kong would one day teach the lessons of Wuju to a pupil of his own. In the spirit of this agreement, he renamed Kong '' Wukong,'' and gave him a weapon suited to his unusual nature - an enchanted staff that the young Doran had crafted. The weapon was an unrivalled masterpiece. Guided by Yi, Wukong joined the League of Legends to prove himself as the best, and to show the world the true power of Wuju.
''Only in combat do you learn who you truly are.''
But i guess you all hopefully know the true story: The journey to West :P
Pros / Cons
So lets start with the good things about Wukong :
- Great burst ability
- Aoe cc ( Cyclone)
- Gapcloser( Nimbus Strike)
- He's the Juke Master with Decoy
- Crushing Blow deals damage to towers.
- People will underestimate you
- Kind of squishy at early game
- Needs to play with patient
- His Decoy is easily countered with Oracles Elexir
For Masteries i recommend the traditional 21/9/0 Masteries, because Wukong benefits great of them. For those who are wondering why i take Tough Skin instead of 2 points in Resistance , its because i experienced more use of it when i was laning against other Ad/Bruisers. But of course if you want to go mid or if you lane against an Ap/Bruiser like Rumble, i would agree with that taking 2 points in Resistance than in Tough Skin
Also don't use 4 points in Sorcery they first might be looking sensefull but the other points are more important and your Cyclone already has a low cooldown at late.
However if you play against a hard Counter/Opponent I would recommend
the tanky masteries
I think the 9 points in the offensive masteries are for everyone pretty much understandable so i wont explain them further. But there might be some Questions with some of the other points like 3 Points in Evasion instead of Vigor . Well i prefer Evasion more because its more for the lategame and this is the point when you just can activate your ultimate, circling into them, without fearing to go down immediately, because you take less dmg from the aoe spells. With Vigor you jsut have a small deffensive boost for your first levels which really will fall of in late.
Greater Mark of Lethality
Greater Mark of Attack Damage
Greater Seal of Armor
Greater Glyph of Magic Resist
Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist
Greater Quintessence of Attack Damage
For runes i recommend 4x Greater Mark of desolation and 5x Greater Mark of Attack Damage. So your first question might be, why not 9x of one sort? Well, i think a mix of late and early runes are always the best, also Wukong scales into late( his ulti has an abnormal ad scaling) and thats why i build him like that.
I think the 9x runes of Greater Seal of Armor are pretty much clear. So no need to explain that.
The next think is should i go 9x Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist or Greater Glyph of Magic Resist?
So i personally go 9x Greater Glyph of Magic Resist when iam top against an ap/Bruiser or mid against an ap. However i would go Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist when iam not fighting against an ap champion at laning phase. So you will get the most use of it.
For Quintessence i recommend Greater Quintessence of Attack Damage basically because its good for lasthitting and every spell exept for Decoy scales nice with it. But of course you also might go greater Quintessence of desolation as well. There will never be a perfect guide for a champion, because you will always need to fit your items and masteries / runes against the Champions you are facing in the game.
Skill Order explanation
I first skill Nimbus Strike at level 1, because of the lower cd than Crushing Blow(8<12). Howerever i will max out q first, because its the burst skill, also with each Point it will lower its cd (5<8). On level 4 i first time skill Decoy for having an amazing escape tool, which really is (if use good) not to be underestimated. But i max it at last, because it doesnt scale on ad and the base damage is not good enough to skill that first or second. I think, maxing your ulti when its available is clear, so i wont explain that further.
Now lets come to the Skill explanations.
This passive grants you flat armor and magic resist, additionally you will get for each champion in the near more. I think this passive is pretty decent, its not that good like Rebirth or Chosen of the Storm but its still ok.
This is Wukongs "q" ability it lowers the enemy armor, resetts the autoattack timer and is overall just a nice nuke spell.
This is Wukongs "w" ability. In my opinion its one of the best and trickiest escape tool in League of Legends, because you just can press the button "s". This will make you look like the activation of Decoy. A lot of enemies are trying now to run in the direction where your tower stands, because everyone is doing like that if they want to be safe, and now you can just use Nimbus Strike on them or activate now Decoy when they realized you didnt used your "w" and are coming straight towards you.
Here 2 examples:
This is Wukongs "e" ability, it grants a decent attackbuff for a short duration. It's also a ad scaling gapcloser, which can hit up to 3 enemies. This ability synergize very well with all other spells. For examples:
Decoy-> Nimbus Strike-> Crushing Blow-> Cyclone
Decoy-> Nimbus Strike-> Crushing Blow
Nimbus Strike-> crushing blos-> Cyclone
Nimbus Strike-> Crushing Blow
This is Wukongs ultimate. It grants a spin like Garen, additionally enemies who are hit by the staff will be knocked up(wont work multiple times on a same target during this duration). Also the staff will grew longer during the time. One more awesome bonus is that you will get a movementspeed buff that will stack during the duration. That means you also can use this spell as an escape mechanisms.
Flash is in general just a summoner spell that can be used in many situations, for example if you get ganked, need an escape or need a gapcloser. In this current Meta Flash is a must have spell.
Ignite is my second choice, because it synergize very well with the burst of Wukong. Also it finishes enemies that you wouldnt got.
Other Viable choices
A lot of people prefer Ghost on Wukong because it synergizes well with Decoy. However, in my opionion i think its not necessary. Basically because you can just press "s" and if you mastered it you will be escaping for 90% of all the time. Also Wukong already has a Ghost in Cyclone so this is why i prefer Flash
Exhaust or Ignite, well of course you can also take Exhaust instead of Ignite however it has a higher cooldown and doesnt synergize that well with Wukongs kit.
Ignite > Heal but still Heal can be used for baiting and sometimes it saves your life. Requiem!!
Just for removing the cc/dots on you. However i think there are better choices.
Never ever use Teleport in solo queue if you are low elo, because you teammates aren't going to ward anyways and also it has a really high cooldown. I think there are just better choices for Wukong.
Only use Smite if you are going to jungle with Wukong however please don't, because Wukong is the kind of champion that requires a lot of farm. Also his ganks pre-6 are pretty low due to his lack of cc.
All other summoner spells dont really benefit Wukong.
Items explanations and justifications
For my ~Balanced~ Build
Lets start with the boots:
You first of all want to start Boots of Speed with 3 Health Potion, however there are alyways cases where you need to start Cloth Armor with 5 Health Potion. For example if you are facing Yorick. Next thing is, to what should i build this boots ?
There are several viable choices, so lets start with them:
Ninja Tabi, use them if you are facing a champion that deals his most dmg from his autoattacks like Tryndamere. You can sell them later if their team have a lot of cc. Its just about the laning phase if you win it, you surely have enough gold to change them later.
Ionian Boots of Lucidity, this boots are in my opionion unnecessary, however if you dont have any troubles with you lane opponent and their team dont have that much cc, this boots aren't that bad.
Mercury's Treads, basically this boots are my favourite, because it gives tenacity which is really really op. Also it grants you a slight magicresist boost.
Note: I saw a lot of Wukongs who builded Berserker's Greaves, just dont do it, there are better choices for him, because the attackspeed boost dont really benefits Wukongs kit that much.
Now there are probably some Questions why i go double Doran's Blade.
Pretty simple to answer, with the double Dorans you can easily lasthit. Also they are very cheap and are granting a nice and solid early game.
Next thing is the Heart of Gold, I just build it, when i feel that I cant really lasthit. Also the heal boost is pretty nice too.
Lets discuss Trinity Force. This item is basically a must have for Wukong, it's a great addition to Wukongs burst, because of the harmonize of Sheen and Crushing Blow. Also it grants Movementspeed and a slow, which is really usefull. Theres only one thing about it that is unnecessary, the 30 ability power.
After that you want to go a bit tanky, otherwise you cant really maximize the full potential of Cyclone , because it brings nothing if you are dead within 2 seconds after you activated your ultimate. So i asked myself what synergizes good with Wukong?
And here's the answer Sunfire Cape, it grants you life, armor and a nice dmg aura that works perfectly with your Cyclone. For only 2500 g its just op:).
Next thing I usually build is Banshee's Veil because it gives you life, mana, magicresist and a shield. Also its very cost efficient.
So after going a bit tanky, you want to add some damage again. So now they are 3 choices:
You go Last Whisper if they stack a lot of armor or you go The Bloodthirster if they don't, of course you can also go them both but then you will miss your Guardian Angel
So this really depends on what the enemy team build.
For my ~offensive~ Build
First of all I want to say that i will only write the changes, otherwise i would repeat myself. Also only go this build if your team lacks on dmg and has several tanks that can iniate/protect you.
So the first items are the same Boots of Speed, Doran's Blade etc. However the first changes are at the build order where i usually would build Heart of Gold. For that i build 2 Long Sword for some extra damage output. Later i will build them into a Phage--> Trinity Force and a Hexdrinker--> Maw of Malmortius. Usually i rush The Bloodthirster after Trinity Force however you can also go for Last Whisper directly after it.
A Guardian Angel is a must have in this build, because you are so squishy, everyone will focus you. So there are now 3 choices again:
The Bloodthirster or Maw of Malmortius or Infinity Edge?
So if you ask me i would build the The Bloodthirster then it depends, if they have a lot of aps go for MoM and if they dont, go for Ie.
For my ~Deffensive~ build
I will just write the changes down, no need to repeat myself and bore the readers=). Also only go this build if you need some tankyness, because of their hard damage comp and your team is lacking some tankyness and have enough damage dealers.
So in this Build i just replaced my The Bloodthirster/ Last Whisper for Maw of Malmortius and Randuin's Omen
However there's a choice now if you want to go Guardian Angel instead of Randuin's Omen. It's up to you^^
Other viable Items for Wukong
In this chapter i will list up other viable items for Wukong. However there's no particular order.
So lets randomly start with
It grants you massive Health and lifereg. However the cost is really high and I just think there might be better options for that. Also the "Atmogs" combo isn't that great anymore since the nerf.
It grants a high health pool, a small amount of ad and a decent slow. However if you go this you cant really go Trinity Force because the slow would be wasted. Also the cost of 3,2k g is ridiculously high.
Aegis of the Legion
Usually this is builded on supports and junglers. However double aegis stacks, so it wouldn't be a waste. But I think there are just better options, basically because it denies one important item spot.
This Item might be strange for Wukong, but actualy all the stats that are given benefits Wukong. However this does not stack twice, so let the support or tanks build this item, because they need for example the cdr more.
It's basically not a bad item on Wukong. However it delays your items after it and the onliest Item that can be builded of The Brutalizer is Youmuu's Ghostblade, which is actualy pretty decent on Wukong but the Attackspeed on it is a bit wasted.
Pretty nice item actually for the early game, but after that you need to sale it. The sustain on it will help you to play againsts several enemies like Yorick
It scales nice on high health pools, so it synergize really well with builds that grant +3k health. But since the nerf the popularity decreased hard.
Nice early sustain and a free ward. Nothing to complain about it. Can be just delaying your lategame items.
If there team is full of ad carries you may build it, otherwise no:D
Great item against cc/dots, build it against Warwick or Malzahar to counter them hard
Force of Nature
Grants nice stats, nothing to complain about
Lets beginn with the Early game
Buy 3 Health Potion and Boots of Speed or 5 Health Potion and Cloth Armor. Depends on the matchup. Try to lasthit the minions and after you reach level 2 try to harass with Nimbus Strike followed up by Crushing Blow. But dont do this against all champions like Lee Sin. Always play with Patient. After you reached level 4 and skilled Decoy you may go more aggressive, because you can easily escape. However dont overextend, early ganks of junglers will wreck you...
After you hit the level 6 mark you can unleash your full DAMAGE POTENTIAL. Use the full combo E->Q->R->Ignite when the opponent has like 1/4 of his life. And dont forget to buy wards :).
In mid game you can try to roam after you pushed your lane of course. Also try to destroy the top lane turret to deal more pressure to your lane opponent and letting you free to roam more easily. However if you lose your lane, try not to feed and always warn your team members if your enemy is missing.
Buy wards and try to push your lane if your opponent is roaming. So he will lose farm. You can also try to destroy his tower while he's roaming. If you didn't lose your lane hard you can also try to counter gank, if you exactly know where he's going. But don't forget pay patient.
In late game always try to stick and cooperate with your teammates. Don't flame, it's the key to success. Trust me. Also if your team don't have a tank try to iniate with
Decoy--> Nimbus Strike--> Cyclone
then aim for the carries and shut them down as fast as possible. In late game every mistake counts and can lead you to a lose. So try to play very patient at this game phase and ask your supporter or jungler to buy wards in case you dont have any spot left.
Top Lane Opponents from A-Z
I will probably do a top lane opponents from A-Z depending on how much success i have with this guide, because it takes a lot of time and effort. :) i hope you understand that point. (Under constructions)
Finally the summary *phew
I just want to say before you downvote me, try the build or leave a comment with a justification. So i know what I can improve =). Also i want to thanks the Guide helper(sorry forgot your name >.<) with the Bad and Good Karthus example. It was really helpfull.
Also iam open for every Questions. But please be patient, because iam not always online on Mobafire.
Have a nice day guys:)
