If your opponents are stupid enough to die to Riven early this build is probably worth it.
If not you're probably screwed.

I think that would be a skill matchup, I never start with shield because I can farm from a safer distance with my ball. I never lose lane or die to a Riven because I know how to play safe and as orianna, you can totally stay safe and still harass the enemy, but my point as that Syndra and Orianna aren't the only mages out there that can be annoying to Riven before lvl 6, so mentioning getting Valor at lvl 1 is still worth it.

I get your point but 90% of the Oriannas Ive played against start with their shield anyways, and if she did stay far enough back 2 Qs would gapclose this, along with 2 autos thats quite a lot of damage, furthermore, if Ori does start Q then whilst the ball is off her she has less armour meaning you do more damage to her. Oris level 1 is pretty bad if she moves the ball out far away to zone you as she has to go pick it up again or Q close to herself and then pick it up, especially since her Q at rank 1 is like 4-6 seconds CDR, in that window you could Broken Wings (Gap close) -> Broken Wings (Gap Close/Dmg) -. Auto -> Broken Wings -> Auto, walk away in the space of 2.5 seconds, you will take harass on the walk back but she will have to pop a pot or two or die at level 2 whilst you can just pop 1 pot and live then kill with jungler or even by yourself.
Syndra I would definitely start Valor though xD

Reitea, I have to agree with Khazem on this one, I may not play Riven on mid, but I play lots of Orianna and Syndra for example, I was against a Riven quite a few times already and boy, I make her suffer a lot with my balls, it's the easiest thing to hit a ball on Riven when shes going to farm and zone her out of lane early game.

But let me tell you what ain't easy. When you go against a Riven that levels up Valor first, if she's good, there's no way you can harass her hard without losing a lot of mana or losing farm to harass her with AAs. Remember this is a guide on how to play Riven Mid Lane, and a lot of mages will just be at a safe distance throwing skill shots at Riven, I think the point against these matchups is to survive and farm, not try to have a lot of damage to kill at lvl 2, since you probably won't even have the chance.
