My name is Tap28 and welcome to my Master Yi Guide. Im honestly aware that playing Master Yi doesnt seem really difficult, and it is not, but in some points there might always be people that need a guide for the first times, or just want a picture of how to really play him.

For the runes we'll want to get as much Attack Speed as we can without forgetting our defense.

With these runes you will have about 29% Attack Speed, 216 HP at lvl 18 and 27 magic resist at lvl 18. The point on getting Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist is, that you will build an armor Item and if you build a magic resist item, it will be Mercurial Scimitar or Maw of Malmortius.
Often, players play with 6 - 9 Greater Glyph of Scaling Cooldown Reduction, which i personally dont prefer. 7 - 10 % CDR is good, but the other way you might have too less Magic Resist and as your main Spells CD is reduced for every AA, i dont think that CDR runes are that important

Masteries

space Master Yi is an AA champ, which means that the first tree should be self explaining. The only Questions will be if we rather take Double Edged Sword or Feast, and if we rather take Warlord's Bloodlust or fevor of battle.

is what i prefer. You deal 3% more damage, but take 1.5% more damage. This is worth at , because you will want to rush through opponents and not tank them. Also, this masterie gives you 1.5% more damage then you take from it.


gives you up to 20% life steal, which is pretty good and will give you nice sustain in fights and in jungling. It is very good because with your Blade of the Ruined King you will have some really nice life steal and will be hard to deal with.
spaceee

is something more defensive and safe in early game. It falls completely off in late game. Once you finished your Skirmisher's Sabre - Bloodrazor, you wont need this. It might be easier to start jungling with feast, but with my jungle route you wont need this.

nevertheless is what i prefer. You will easily get your 8 stacks on it and will easily hold them. It will give you 112 extra dmg per AA, and you AA very often. Why i take this and not Warlord's Bloodlust is because you build the one tank item, which will give you enough sustain if you dont need to tank the whole enemy team.

We will split the Items section into 3 parts
  • Early Game Items
  • Mid Game/ Core Items
  • Rounding up Items
Early Game Items

We'll do a basic start.
Start with Hunter's Machete and get yourself either 3 Health Potion or a Refillable Potion.
Then rush Skirmisher's Sabre and Vision Ward. Then finish your Skirmisher's Sabre - Bloodrazor and rush Berserker's Greaves
You will want to get these Items as quick as possible, because jungling, taking drake and fighting 1 v 1 will be much much easier.
BTW: dont forget buying a pink ward, it might seem useless for newcomers, but it has such a great influence when you have vision and know what happens and where the enemies are.

Mid Game/ Core Items

Blade of the Ruined King is essential if you go on-hit Master Yi. It gives you attack speed, attack damage, percentage health damage and life steal. You should first get yourself Bilgewater Cutlass and then Recurve Bow to have some sustain as you will have enough Attack Speed at this moment.

Death's Dance is something not very much people will reccomend you. They will rather want you to rush Statikk Shiv or Guinsoo's Rageblade, but i really recommend you to buy Death's Dance. It gives you 75 Attack Damage and life steal which also is granted by your Alpha Strike. In addition it will give you 15 % of the taken damage oveer 5 seconds. This will give you good sustain, espacially when you are waiting for help because you are losing a 1 v 1 and activate your Meditate. In early game there should normally be no one that deals damage to you when you have your Death's Dance and activate your Meditate.

Rounding up Items



So, for now we have 4 Items:
- Skirmisher's Sabre - Bloodrazor
- Berserker's Greaves
- Blade of the Ruined King
- Death's Dance

What we need now is Defense. But which one?
- Dead Man's Plate?
- Randuin's Omen?
- The Black Cleaver?
- Spirit Visage?

I cant give you this answer, because it will be very situational

For example;
The enemy is heavy AD and you normally buld Dead Man's Plate against a heavy AD Team, but if the opponent has a Yasuo or a Tryndamere you'll probably wanna build Randuin's Omen.
If the enemy team consists of 3 Tanks, you will want to build The Black Cleaver.

As you see, this is situational and relates to your opponent. I will give you short tips on what to build against speccific Opponents in the Matchup Section.

Always Skill like this. Your Alpha Strike will give you a nice clear and it is basically your main skill. Maxing Wuju Style second means having more absolute Damage, fighting against tanks will be mmuch much easier. Maxing Meditate second will get you more sustain in the jungle and you will be able to tank more while your Meditate is activatet, but maxing Wuju Style second is the way to do it.

What to do with Master Yi

So what makes Master Yi so deadly, how to get pentakills on Master Yi and what exactly are you supposed to do when playing Master Yi?

Master Yi is very AA reliant. This means you basically have to get into the enemy team, a place where you actually dont wanna be as a squishy champ. Normally non-tank melee champs are supposed to have good sustain or at least CC ( See Riven, Aatrox, Jax), but Master Yi does not. His sustain doesnt come from his kit, it comes from what he builds. So what does that mean?
It means your lost in early game if you dont play him properly.

Why are we actually letting Crimson Raptor as last Camp?

We do that because we want to clear the whole Jungle first before backing and this is the best way to lose the least HP, as your Alpha Strike will immediately kill every of the little birds on lvl 2 ([[Master Yi lvl 4].

Where is the Gank?

It is Nowhere. Sorry laners but you will have to try surviving the first minutes on your own.
BUT if you see a enemy with really low health, go and gank the lane, and if you need to, use Flash

Should I invade the enemy Jungle?

Sure, why not. But only if you see the enemy jungler on the other Side of the Map. Go for the camp and imemdiately leave the enemy Jungle. It is a dangerous place for a Master Yi in early game.

Should i invade more often when i have my Skimisher's sabre - bloodrazor?

Yes, especially if you have it before your opponent has his Smite Upgrade after you.

How are we actually taking the Camps?

Well what you wanna do is first wait until your Alpha Strike is of Cooldown. Then go to a little monster, AA him and use your Alpha Strike after that. Kill the one little, then the other before focusing the Big Monster.
Little Tip


Are we using Wuju Style for taking a Camp?

You Can. But i wouldnt recommend. Master Yi is a champ that is always endangered getting invaded and if it comes to a 1 v 1 you will need your Wuju Style, believe me.

Some Tips and Tricks

Master Yis gameplay should be now known. But there are still some Tricks and Tips on how to play Master Yi
  • Meditate is also an AA reset. Especially high elo Players abuse this very often. In a fight, when you are AAing, use Meditate immediately after your AA to cancle its animation, after immediately after using Meditate, use another AA. This requires perfect timing and very quick reaction, especially once you have about 2,4 Attack Speed, but it will help you so much in fights once mastered.
  • Your Alpha Strike normally teleports you to the enemy you targetet, but if this enemy dies while Alpha Strike you will come out on your normal position. This can be bad if you want to get out with your Alpha Strike, but it can be very very usefull, too.
    E.G.: In my last game my top laner died to Xin Zhao, who had about 50 HP left and there was an enemy minion wave walking through the tower, where Xin Zhao was recalling. I used Alpha Strike that way, that it would damage Xin Zhao but the minion would be out of Tower range when i was back, so i got a nice lvl 2 towerdive kill without getting any tower hits.
  • If you Tower dive, get out of Tower range but there is this one shot incoming that would kill you, use Meditate right after getting out of tower range, it might let you survive
  • I just said, Alpha Strike wont teleport you to the enemy if it dies. You can use this to fool an enemy and maybe make a skillshot miss. The enemy will most likely aim his skillshot towards the minion you most likely used Alpha Strike on, but he will miss if it dies and you come out at the same position as you were before Alpha Strike
  • Another one, You can Alpha Strike over walls to escape
  • Sometimes AAing 2 more times to get your Alpha Strike back is better then running to another enemy
  • YEES you can also use your Highlander to get Towers quicker
  • FFS, dodge all kind of CC you can dodge. This is no Trick, this is a Command
  • OkayOkayOkayOkayOkay, engaging into the enemy team with your Alpha Strike and hoping that your team will follow up is NOT a good Idea
