Threats to Rengar with this build

Threat Champion Notes
3
Master Yi Easy to kill if he's glass, you outpressure him early and mid, but he outscales you late game and can kill you easily if he builds 1 tank item.
3
Rammus He's easy to kite and root, but he outscales you through building pure armor. His ganks are better than yours early, but your ganks are a lot faster to execute. Don't fight him later on as he can easily kill you.
3
Aatrox He has 0 pressure early, but he outscales you really hard, especially if he builds a mix of armor and damage.
3
Kindred She's squishy and has very little cc. You can assasinate her easily, even after she casts her ult as long as you're near bushes. Her strength is her raw damage, but she lacks CC.

Who am I?

I've been playing league for around 1 and a half years and have been maining rengar for a year now. I made it to Diamond 5 last season with Rengar on two accounts with around 500 Rengar games played in ranked last season and a lot more in normals too.

Rengar's place in the current meta (6.22 Preseason 7)

Rengar has been buffed tremendously. He now only need 4 ferocity for an empowered ability and can generate all that ferocity in 1 combo due to his leap passive generating 1 for him. He now gains insane movement speed whenever he uses empowered abilities, and also gains even more movement speed with his ultimate which is 15 seconds long now. They did, however, remove his Ult's vision utility that used to display all enemies within a certain radius. Now it chooses the nearest enemy and marks them with a symbol above their head and gives you vision of them for the duration of your ult if you're within range of them. Rengar's Q and W both got buffed substantially. His Q now deals a lot more damage, and it's AoE! His W offers a lot more utility now than it used to, but offers less sustain. His empowered W now removes all CC from you and blocks incoming cc for a few seconds (which is awesome for an assassin like rengar to get around without dying instantly).

IMPORTANT: They now BUFFED Rengar's Unseen Predator to have a 725 leap range which was the old range buff if you earned 6+ stacks on your bone tooth. Now you get that buff from level 1. INCREASED LEAP RANGE! YAY!!!

Tl;dr - New Rengar Seems really Overpowered and you should play it in top/jungle. However, his build path has change a little bit to a more bruiser oriented build. This buff seems to have made him a lot more of a balanced, yet more useful all around champion in a lot of situations. Unfortunately, because he's OP, a lot of games he's Pick/banned.

Why rengar? Why tankgar top?

Why Rengar? Because he's really fun to play and in season 7 he also happens to be a top tier jungle pick. His base stats were buffed and so was his scaling and usefulness in general to the team.

Tank Rengar top lane is a good build in case your team is lacking tanks and front line, then you can build tanky and still be effective with Rengar. With the new Rengar rework however, it seems that the optimal build for him would be a bruiser build with hp/ad. Like black cleaver, and maw, then full tank or something like that. Because of his bonetooth stacks passive, he's able to build tanky and still do quite a bit of damage.

Items/Spells/Champs/Strategies that counter Rengar

Champions that counter Rengar - Pretty much anyone that negates your damage or can tank your damage easily

Items that wreck Rengar include..
Thornmail alone, doesnt do much, but combined with another armor item, it wrecks Rengar

Spells that wreck Rengar are anything with hard cc like surpress, stun, lock downs, knockups such as...

Strategies that counter Rengar are Grouping and sticking next to your tanks, and also Deep warding so that you can see when Rengar is ulting onto some one from way ahead of time. Vision Ward also really helps in spotting out a stealthed Rengar.

Runes with explanations (outdated)

This is my go to page for when I'm jungling. The yellows can be swapped out for armor if you prefer that. This is a heavy scaling page, that allows you to fight tanks easier and 1 shot squishies easier because of the great use of armor pen once you get 1 or 2 AD items. Always take CDR on Rengar jungle. It will help you ult and gank more often. The reason this page is so effective in the jungle and not in the top lane is because if you take these runes to the top lane you will get all inned and punished for the early squishy page. But in the jungle, the only thing you have to worry about are invades and clearing without dying. Once you finish your 1st jungle item, clearing will grant you more sustain.

This page is great for when you're top laning vs an AP laner. Take MR to lower the poke damage from the enemy, but no armor, since they mostly have to rely on their spells for damage and not their AAs. The health will help you to win early all ins coupled with your sustain in health pots or your doran's blade depending on your start, you should be able to win early all ins fairly easily.

Tip to Control and dominate the lane better for Top lane

You snowball very hard in the top lane if you get ahead because of your high damage and ability to gap close anyone with your Unseen Predator. A good technique to use when zoning lane opponents is to "drag" the wave to the bush so that the minions are closer to the bush and the enemy has to come closer to the bushes to CS properly, which will allow you to zone them from coming close. The way you drag the minions to the bush is as the minions are coming into the lane, take the aggro first and walk towards the bush slowly until the minions come very close to the bushes.

Perfect Q combo (outdated)

The perfect combo, AKA the DELETION COMBO, consists of starting out with Thrill of the Hunt, Pressing your Empowered Savagery about a second before you jump, then Youmuu's Ghostblade active, then Bola Strike mid-air, then Ravenous Hydra and Battle Roar right before you land on them. Once you land you will autoattack, then you will have 5 ferocity again if you landed your bola, and you can Empowered Savagery again if needed. Most squishy targets only require the initial mid-air combo and 1 or 2 autoattack to kill, but if you need more then you can use more damage. Credit goes to Dekar for making this video.

Perfect E Combo (outdated)

The perfect combo, AKA the LOCK DOWN DELETION COMBO, consist of starting out with Thrill of the Hunt, Youmuu's Ghostblade, Empowered Bola Strike in mid-air when you jump onto the target, and then Ravenous Hydra and Battle Roar when you are about to land and then autoattack, Savagery and your target should be locked down and deleted within 1.5 seconds. Using your Thrill of the Hunt (R) for Vision (outdated)

Thrill of the Hunt gives vision of enemy champions nearby. The higher level Thrill of the Hunt is, the longer the range of the vision it gives you. This ability is really important to use for vision when you have no wards in the mid or late game and think that maybe the enemy might be doing baron or baiting baron and you want to check if they're doing it without actually face checking it. It also works really well, in general, when your team has low vision control. And late game when you have 35% or 45% cdr, it's really good to use this because your ult is on a really low cooldown, anywhere from 38 seconds to 45 seconds, so better safe than sorry.

Farsight Alteration vs Oracle Alteration

Both are really good trinkets on Rengar. Farsight Alteration is really nice for checking objectives with if you have limited vision control and also good for warding over walls when chasing people down, so as to give you an extra leap over a wall or terrain where you don't have vision already. I prefer Farsight Alteration in most cases, but I'd say the higher the elo you get to, the more you will want to start using Oracle Alteration because higher elo players tend to use their vision control more effectively to snowball games and catch people out. If you're Diamond 3 or higher, I'd say go for a Oracle Alteration, but really it's a preference based choice. Both are great items and I'd recommend them both.

Why is Rengar's skillcap so high?

+Contrary to popular belief that Rengar is an easy champion, he is actually one of the highest skill cap champions in the game preceding champions like Riven, Nidalee, Lee Sin, Yasuo and Vayne.
+Yes, his ultimate is easy to use and easy to learn the combos, BUT!, learning exactly what you're capable of in every single scenario possible takes lots and lots of games to master Rengar.
+You are a very high damage squishy that relies heavily on items and kills, so if you want to get good at Rengar, you must learn how to snowball in the majority of your games. This means, feeding and going even, ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH, you must CARRY with Rengar because that's what he is designed to do. CARRY. You cannot go even and expect to win a game just because you didn't feed.
+Step 1 is learning how to not feed.
+Step 2 is learning how to get a lead and snowball off of it.
+Step 3 is learning great decision making when using your Thrill of the Hunt and Unseen Predator. One small misstep, one wrong move, can cost you the game easily, but master your judgement on Rengar and you will be an extremely strong assassin snowballing menace to the enemies.
+Your goal is to make your enemies FEAR YOU if they don't fear you, you are doing your job wrong. Rengar takes hundreds of games to understand how much power you truly have in your hands and how you can make the most of it with positioning, timing, and pure kill power. Understanding your kill potential in all situations will make you a very good rengar player.
+The BEST way to LEARN Rengar is to play Agressively and test your limits of how hard you can carry. Yes, you will have terrible games, but they provide a learning experience that is worth more than losing 1 game. Make those mistakes and grow as a Rengar player, and you will be happy when you get to the other side!

I will leave a list of names that you can reference to in youtube VODs or Twitch streams, so that you get an idea of what you should be doing as rengar!

Difficulty of laning in the Top lane and Why he's better in the jungle (out

+ Rengar, as you probably already know, isn't a meta top laner. There's good reasoning behind it too. He is easy to counter, provides no tankiness to the team, lacks hard AoE cc (his cc is skillshot reliant), and tends to be useless when he falls behind, he is also fairly easy to gank once he jumps out of the bush because he has no escapes other than the bushes and usually the only way you can jump is forward away from turret (if you're pushing the lane for a level 2 cheese).
+ To combat some of these laning problems and to be very effective and useful to your team with Rengar top lane, you have to, YOU MUST learn how to CONTROL THE WAVE properly, this includes freezing and manipulating the wave so that it pushes towards you more often than not.
+ I'm willing to bet any of you who have tried to lvl 2 cheese with Rengar top and failed, usually got ganked after about 30 seconds. Why? Because you manipulated the wave incorrectly and now it's in an inconvenient spot; You either have to get back away from the wave and get denied xp or stay in the bush, get the xp, and most likely get ganked and die or blow your flash.
+ Since it's very dangerous for Rengar to leap out towards the enemy turret to push the wave because he has no other bushes to escape from, it's hard to push the wave into turret, and you essentially screw up your entire lane if you die at lvl 2-3 from a gank. It's super predictable that a Rengar will try to lvl 2 cheese. Everyone does it, so don't push too hard early on, especially if the enemy has a EARLY GANKING JUNGLER with HIGH CC or HIGH DAMAGE.
+ It's very important knowing your match ups, not only in the top lane vs your lane opponent, but also the match up between you and the enemy jungler. Chances are if you are trying to lvl 2 cheese vs an enemy Lee Sin jungler, he will come gank you at 3 minutes and will easily secure a kill on you if you haven't already left the lane. Ok. So let's say you do manage to push the wave and get lvl 2 quicker and manage to kill your lane opponent, but you're left with 1/3 hp from the all in. Now your wave is freezing in the enemy's direction very close to the enemy turret, should you leave and not die and just get denied lots of xp from the enemy lane freeze? or should you stay to push in the wave and risk dying from the Lee Sin that's obviously going to come to kill you? Now you see the problem with top lane Rengar cheese.
+ It's very easy to screw up your entire lane if you lack knowledge of how to control the wave properly. Even if you get that early kill, maybe your opponent has tp and gets an xp advantage on you because you played it safe and left lane to freeze. Because of that they hit lvl 6 first and all in your lvl 5 rengar even though you have 1 kill, it doesn't compensate for the fact that the enemy has their ult first. This problem will not always arise, but it is a very common problem early on with Rengar, so you MUST BE CONCIOUS of the ENEMY JUNGLER'S CHAMPION. If it's an early ganker, you should probably just farm it up and play a little bit more passive than usual to prevent yourself from dying and losing a bunch of xp.
+Anyways, these are the problems that come up with Rengar top and that's why I mostly played him in the jungle to get to diamond.
+Now, I must say, I am not a jungle main, I am a top main, but I still prefer to play Rengar in the jungle because it is a more suited environment for him, just ask any LCS level player and they will tell you that Rengar belongs in the jungle. If you still decide to try and main Rengar top, then best of luck to you. :) It is very challenging, but also rewarding if you get good at Rengar top

Ignite or Exhaust or TP? (outdated)

Ignite is very strong early game and will help you have kill pressure on your lane opponent early on through pure damage. Exhaust on the other hand is very good vs High Damage champions like Fiora, Riven, Jax, Yasuo that scale very well and pack a big punch later on. The Exhaust will allow you to 1v1 them fairly easily if you decide to ult onto them because it reduces their damage by 40%, armor/MR, movement speed, and attack speed for 2 whole seconds. 2 seconds for Rengar is an eternity because he can burst squishys from 100-0 in less than a second sometimes 1.5 seconds at most. So basically, Exhaust is your survival insurance for late game and will allow you to 1v1 pretty much anybody even a 10kills - 0 deaths adc. Remember, all that matters is how fast you can kill the enemy, If you can kill them before they can kill you, then you're golden and chances are, with your high burst and Exhaust, you can kill pretty much anybody Late game.

Teleport on the other hand, is a situational Summoner spell to take. For example if I'm vs a Darius or Quinn that I'm 99% positive I will either lose lane or go even in lane at best, I will for sure take Teleport because it will make up for my mistakes in lane and will ensure that I don't lose too much xp if I get forced out of lane. If I'm going to build Tanky Rengar I'll always take Teleport But, In most match ups you will want to take a combat summoner spell to dominate your lane.

Tl;dr Ignite for early kill pressure, but Exhaust scales much better into the late game and allows you to 1v1 nearly anybody even fed enemies. Take Teleport in lanes you're sure you will lose or at best go even in, so that you can get back to lane easier if you get forced out and Also take Teleport if you are building tank Rengar.

RFC vs Statikk shiv vs PD. Which combination is better?

Rapid Firecannon by far is the better 1v1ing option for Rengar. RFC IS BETTER FOR 1 SHOTTING! It provides more single target burst than Statikk Shiv which is very useful on Rengar because of his 1 shotting capabilities with Thrill of the Hunt. Statikk Shiv and Rapid Firecannon passive damages do not stack, only their effects do, as stated in

Patch 5.24
What this means is that if you buy both, you won't be getting extra damage from their passive, but you will be able to have longer range attack, with a lightning bolt effect. So, late game, after you buy Rapid Firecannon and you have extra gold laying around, sell your Ionian Boots of Lucidity and buy a Phantom Dancer. This will max out your crit at 100% and will also give you 45% more attack speed which will effectively give you more damage than if you stacked Statikk Shiv and Rapid Firecannon passives.
Patch 6.1

Patch 6.2

Patch 6.3

Rapid Firecannon got 2 nerfs in a row and Phantom Dancer and Statikk Shiv both got several buffs, so they're more viable now. Phantom Dancer is specifically a lot more cost effective because it costs less than Statikk Shiv and Rapid Firecannon, so it can work better on Rengar now.

Decision making and having good judgement

Rengar although a bit mechanically demanding, isn't that hard to learn how to play. But, the difficult part about Rengar is not his mechanics, as many may believe, it's the decisions you make with him. Rengar is a very unforgiving champion, but he also has the potential to single-handedly carry games, so that's his trade off. He's super powerful, but also insignificant if he makes bad decisions or falls behind by a lot. What I mean by judgement is asking yourself before you jump out of a bush onto an enemy, ulting onto the enemy laner, or just ulting straight into a team fight, "Why am I doing this? What am I trying to gain? Is this the best way to play this situation? Could I have played that better? Should I really be the one initiating teamfights?" You can go on and on, and that's exactly why Rengar takes lots of experience because in nearly all situations, there is something you could have done better, always.

Don't under estimate your damage! (outdated)

All of your damage comes from your basic abilities which means that you don't really have to rely on your ult to kill people. If you get 5 stacks and someone walks up to you or if you wait in a bush you suspect someone will face check, you can easily one shot them with out having to use your ult by just using Empowered Savagery, Bola Strike, Battle Roar, and Ravenous Hydra.

How to ensure you aren't seen by deep wards when ganking

The easiest way to avoid being seen before ganking is to simply base and run straight through a lane because there are almost never wards deep in the lane in between towers. If you'd much rather gank from a different route, then be sure to have Oracle Alteration so that you can scan before ganking.

Little known rengar tricks

After you get 6 stacks on your bonetooth necklace to increase your leap range, you can jump into the dragon and baron pit, from the the bushes directly behind the pit. Please note that the more Movement speed you have, the easier this will be to do, so consider buying Ionian Boots of Lucidity - Alacrity or Boots of Mobility - Alacrity and using your Youmuu's Ghostblade active if you want to have a higher success rate. Also, these jumps take quite a bit of practice to get used to, so practice them. As you can see in the videos, the jumps took me several attempts, so they're not really practical, but they can come in handy some times.

This teleport leap trick allows you to have an extra gap closer in tp ganks which is really useful
Note - This may not work due to recent ninja nerfs. So far, I have not been able to reproduce this as of patch 6.2

This trick will allow you to cast all 3 of your basic abilities even if you have 3 or 4 ferocity already stacked up. It will help you to higher your dps and jungle faster.
Rengar ferocity stacking trick
This is an interesting interaction between Rengar when he takes a thresh lantern from inside of a bush. Credit goes to Waysor on youtube for figuring this trick out and allowing me to use his video for this guide.

Guide Top

How your Leap works! IMPORTANT!

Unseen Predator allows you to jump and gap-close any targetable enemy object which includes anything from champions to minions to wards/trinkets. Early on your leap range is 600, and after you get 6 stacks on your bonetooth necklace it goes up to 725 range. However, these ranges are not completely accurate because you can jump at any time within .5 seconds of leaving a bush or coming out of your stealth in Thrill of the Hunt. This means that the more movement speed that you have when leaving a bush, the farther you will be able to effectively jump. So use this to your advantage. For example, if you're doing a Empowered Bola Strike combo with your Thrill of the Hunt, you can throw your Empowered Bola Strike before leaping while you're in range of the target and then jump anytime within .5 seconds of throwing the bola and it will still jump even after becoming unstealthed.

Hope this guide helps you aspriring Rengar mains
A big shout out to Nieque for helping me to improve and optimize my guide for season 6 and also Joey Bob for reminding me to finish the rune section. Thank you so much for the helpful feedback! I really appreciate it.
