HEY

honestly I don't want to continue this guide AT ALL, because I just feel like Galio is not my specialty--plus apcs aren't too common anymore. This guide is officially dead, but if it helps you in anyway, I'd be glad to hear it! I'll be working on a Rakan guide from here on out, so check that out!

Updates- Quickies

--Though I wrote this guide back in early January at least, I am now going to start documenting updates. Current Chapters as of first update are Intro through Masteries.--

Introduction- The Season 7 Meta Begins!

NOTICE: THIS GUIDE WAS STARTED IN PATCH 7.1 AND WILL BE UPDATED ACCORDINGLY.

There's plants in the jungle. There are new mastery keystones. Lux is going bottom lane, except not as a support... as an APC. 2017 brought a lot of crazy changes with it that we didn't expect from the preseason. Welcome to Season 7.

The guide you are about to read is something that is aimed at a very specific situation. APCs--or ability power carries--are on the rise with the nerfs ADCs have suffered. I believe that to counter these APCs, who can abuse your laner anyway they please, you'll need something even crazier--Galio Support.

Meet the Author- As New as the Meta Itself

Hi! I'm IBELIEVEYOUDO, and I joined mobafire just to post this guide in hopes it'll change the way this meta is evolving. So, why should you listen to what I have to say?

The thing is, I'm not sure you should.

I joined League of Legends back in the middle of Season 6, or the summer of 2016. I consider myself a decent-enough player, but my placements landed me in Bronze IV--recently, from several poor situations occurring repeatedly, I've been demoted to Bronze V. I don't claim to be the best summoner around. However, like most of the community, I'm real--and as the meta evolves, I hope this guide can evolve with it. Let's work together to counter the changes in Season 7.

Now, what I'm about to say next might sound crazy, but hear me out...

I don't main Galio.

In fact, I don't even own him yet! Right now, this guide is entirely theoretical, and I am still saving up to buy him. It's kind of sad to say that, but like I said, this guide is made by a real person, for real people. In such an evolving gaming environment, you can't just 'google' how to deal with the current bottom-lane metas. What you have to do to overcome them is THINK about the situation--and the one real reason you should give this guide a read is because I'm good at doing just that.

While I might be completely new to this champion, another reason I can be accredited to write this guide is because I am a new player that respects metas. I am not all about doing crazy things to break metas, but I still believe it is okay to push them. My hope is to push and perfect the Galio support. Looking on mobafire, I only found about five other Galio Support guides--it wouldn't hurt to have another, even the author is kinda-sorta-not-the-most-qualified.

As stated, I don't have much experience with Galio, but I am not COMPLETELY clueless. Bot lane is most certainly where I excel the most. My mains are...

ADCs- Jinx, Sivir, and Twitch.
Supports- Karma, Nami, Lulu, and Leona.

As well, I can play every lane a little bit; I suck at jungling, but I am striving to succeed at every role. As you can see, I at least have enough wisdom to talk about the bot lane and key-factors for supports, which hopefully I can implement onto Galio.

The Situation- ADCs are Getting their Tails Kicked

The title of this chapter kind of explains it. In Season 7 (plus during the preseason) lots of changes were made that absolutely destroyed the reign of this role from past times.

This is a great article on the issues with ADCs this season, courtesy of LOLKing. http://www.lolking.net/news/the-current-issues-with-the-adc-role

In short, ADCs just don't have the same impact they used to. The only thing you can really hope to do is not feed and hope you make a difference by middle/late game. One thing many summoners have been doing to counter the direct and indirect nerfs to the role has been opting for an APC choice- an ability power carry- instead of the orthodox ADC. APCs have lots of the early game power, which is extremely important in Season 7 (evident through emphasis Riot has put on a jungler's early game, and the cheaper builds for tanks versus ADCs.) APCs haven't exactly been mastered yet; I've played some games as Jinx where I've absolutely destroyed the enemy Lux, just because she didn't know what she was doing. Some people, such as Ziggs mains, still do crazy damage with their ults late game. So, my fellow supports out there... how do we stop these new APCs from destroying our ADCs, and eventually our teams?

As stated, I think the answer is Galio. His passive LITERALLY grants him ap based off of his magic resist. While typically found in top lane, or even mid lane, his abilities still let him shape up to be a great support, especially with all the changes to items Riot has introduced this season. His Q can slow down those nasty APCs so they either can't reach your laner or allow your laner to do some damage to them; his W grants armor AND magic resist to either himself or an ally, and heals himself, which is great for sustainability; his E is fun to poke with and gives allies speed for either engaging or escaping; and his R is great for teamfights, which is wonderful late game whether you focus utility or not. Touching again on sustainability, he can be built so many ways--AP, MR, tank, utility--there's lots he can do that will still have that impact late game even if your ADC doesn't really make a difference come the 30 minute mark.

So, this guide will be centered around a Galio support build when there is an enemy APC. I am so totally new to the idea of Galio, and am trying my best to comprehend this meta, so this will definitely be an evolving, constantly-updated guide. Please don't expect much from it though as far as typical support (or any other lane for that matter) Galio goes! This guide is ONLY recommended for if you are facing an APC!

Okay, let's work together to make Galio the best he can be for this new meta! Your input is going to be very helpful in making this guide the best it can be.

Spells- To Flash or Not to Flash

As a support main, I can speak pretty confidently about what summoner spells you should take.

What spells should you take, and when?
  • Flash: You should always take this spell on a support, as it is useful for escapes, chasing, etc. Us supports aren't always good at surviving alone, so having a tool to rely on when you decide to abort the mission is mandatory.
  • Exhaust: Slow your opponents so your ADC (or even APC) can finish them off, or so that they don't catch up to you when you're trying to escape. This is the most common spell used alongside Flash for supports. Though you can slow enemies with your Q and speed up allies with your E, due to Galio's hefty mana costs early game and long cooldowns, this is a great spell to help you play more conservatively.
  • Ignite: This burning spell is only slightly less common these days on supports, though its impact is just as--if not, more--effective. When your laner can't finish off the opponent, this is of course the best spell to pop. However, some negative aspects may be the potential to steal a kill, or the fact that with your E you are speeding up your allies, and not yourself, may make it hard to hit ignite in the first place.
  • Ghost: I can't think of a time I've actually seen this on a support in the last several games I've played, but it should still be addressed. Just like flash and exhaust, this has to do with speed. It can help you escape, chase, etc... I think it would be hilarious however to speed up with your ghost while getting a speed boost from your E, though. I believe that flash or exhaust would make more effective picks, but if you're feeling gutsy, go ahead! This guide is all about meta-breaking anyways.
  • Barrier: So, this is another unconventional pick for summs. The only benefits I can think of at the moment from taking this would be that your W isn't a legitimate shield, and barrier is. It also kind of goes with the more defensive side of flash, exhaust, and ghost--if you aren't fast enough to run away, or you take one of those and your enemy catches up to you, you can pop your barrier. In a long chase, using your Barrier, Flash/Ghost, W and E, you have almost guaranteed survival. But what are the odds that you're going to be chased all around the map? I would still opt for the better support spells, because what we're trying to accomplish here is keep your laner from dying to an APC. Barrier would only benefit yourself, honestly, versus something like exhaust.

My obvious choices for Galio are going to be exhaust and flash, but again, this is just a guide. It's up to you to use it to your advantage--if you want to go all out with some crazy barrier/ghost combo, you do just that!

Skill Sequence- Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q

...Just kidding! Galio's Q isn't our biggest focus here. In fact, it should really be either your W or your E (preferably W.)

I recommend the W and E having the most points put into them because, if you recall, you're a support. The more you can shield and speed up, the better for your laner to pop their own skills on the enemy. Your Q is definitely, definitely good for poking--you see, Galio is a mana hungry champ, and since you won't be putting a lot of points early on his Q, it'll cost the least amount of mana to use and deal the most amount of damage in comparison to his E. His E, of course, deals damage...but since we're focusing a bit more on it than on his Q, Galio will be spending more mana to poke with his W, and while he might deal a little more damage, it'll leave his ability with a cooldown when you really need it for utility reasons! ...And of course, his ultimate is a GREAT tool, so just feel free to put points on that R as soon as possible. But really, whatever you do, just DON'T spam your abilities.

Now, I haven't tried it yet--this guide is very, VERY theoretical right now, of course--but here is what I think would be the best order for leveling up a support Galio's abilities. I of course will make changes to this once I get a better feel for what works while supporting with him; just to nitpick my own work, I think how long it takes to max his individual abilities will be troublesome. Perhaps it gives just the right amount of balance, though? Who knows, so far?

Masteries- I mean, we're TRYING to master Galio, at least

Guys, this is going to be a joke chapter for now... But public service announcement, don't... just DON'T take Windspeaker's on Galio. Don't do it. Ever. It does not work. --on that note, don't build Athene's Unholy Grail on him.

Because, guess what? His W? You know, the shield? That isn't really a shield. Do not treat it like it is, or it will be the biggest mistake you ever make. Windspeaker's Blessing doesn't work with it, nor does Athene's Unholy Grail. I'll make this into a better paragraph later, just for the love of God, DON'T DO IT.

(I will continue updating this guide once I purchase Galio and try things out.)
