Introduction

Hello Guys and Gals!

Thank you for reading my guide. This is the 1st guide that I have ever made so I apologize if I don't get all the kinks worked out soon enough. I have played Shen for the last 3 seasons pretty religiously, but I have always played him primarily in the jungle. I play him top as well, but I have personally found better success with him in the jungle. Shen is capable of doing pretty good damage throughout the game. If you understand your power spikes, you can be quite a problem for the enemy team early and even carry the game! It is not hard to get kills with Shen. I am talking 1 on one kill(s) or kills off good ganks. Tanks need gold too! There are many games that I do more damage than our AP/AD mid and ADC. At full build you should have between 4000 and 5000 hp and you will be surprised at your damage numbers. This is mainly due to the dmg per HP stat on the Titanic Hydra item. Just make sure to use your active! Thank you for reading and I hope this guide serves you well!

Pros / Cons

Pros:

Super tanky late game and throughout if farmed correctly and contributing with assists or kills

Just got buffed! He was strong before!

Global Ult that can change a fight or even the game.

W can block tons of DMG

Does % health Magic DMG!

Good Movement and one of few champs with a taunt!

Tons of utility, mobility, and crowd control

Cons:

If lanes collapse before you get your Hydra built you are behind

Hydra is the best single dmg item on Shen - Its really expensive!

Ult has a really long cool down

If you fall behind you can be really squishy

Missing a taunt could mean they get away, you die, or you fail to save an ally.

Clear is slow until you get attack speed and Tiamat

DMG can feel lackluster at times, mainly when behind.

Creeping / Jungling

There are a few things to consider before you purchase your starter items and begin jungling. First, are you countered? For example, are you up against a shaco, lee, xin, or voli? If you are, you might want to start with one pot and a control ward. If you are not countered and ready to get some kills. There are 2 ways to go about getting some early kills. First way is cheese. You should have started with summoner spells ignite and smite. It helps if you know where the jungle is starting. Champs like Elise, Amumu, and mana hungry champs almost always start blue buff or blue sentinel. I recommend that you start red, after you secure your red buff head immediately to the enemy gromp. You want to make sure to take your E second. Champs like Amumu, Elise, and even usually lose about half health during those first 2 clear camps. Once approaching them you want to taunt through them, pull your blade through the enemy champion, ignite and auto away. Many times this will yield a nice early 1st blood. With the scaling AD marks, the natural talent mastery, and level 2 you have some good early dmg. You will have I think 5 additional AD. Plus, you have scaling health and 13 armor with Shens high base MR! So you are a pretty good duelst, even early! I do not always recommend invading early with Shen, cause if you die it will hurt you a lot early. But, if you are confident with Shen, you can skirmish without taking a lot of dmg and and if you don't feel the kill coming, a lot of times you can get out. I cannot stress enough to watch your bot and mid lanes while you are invading. If they collapse on you, Ping danger, ping help, and run!

If you chose to not invade (safest option) then I recommend that you start blue buff side and start the blue sentinel. Most people ask me "why are you starting blue on a non Mana champ?" Well the blue helps with your energy also and gives you CDR. 10% flat CDR helps a lot with the clear early! After blue buff you want to rotate to wolves, kill the camp then head towards gromp. After killing gromp here is where you have to make a decision. Gank? Or, farm some more. If lanes are pushed really deep towards your turrets and a lane is getting harassed. I recommend ganking. Even if you do not secure a kill. If you do dmg, it was worth and will scare the laner to play more cautious and give your ally a break. After you have farmed blue side and made your choice whether to gank or not, then head to Red buff side. You want to start your red buff. Often times before starting the buff I recommend either putting a ward in the bush right beside the buff, or placing a ward behind the buff camp in the bush. This is a good way to not get counter jungled and die while clearing camps. Also, you can prepare accordingly if an invade does happen. I recommend clearing the rest of red buff side then recalling. Here you will either buy a Tiamate or berserker greaves. Greaves = better ganks, Tiamate better early clear. Whichever you chose you want to make sure to get a Bami Cinder next. After you have gotten Bami Cinder and boots or Tiamate, I recommend finishing you jungle item. You next goal is to get the tier #2 boots and complete your Titanic Hydra ASAP. If you are "getting blown up" build the health globes 1st. You may also choose to but an armor cloth early due to a fed talon or ADC or even a magic resist mantle. Not a bad idea but it will slow the build down. Keep in mind that HP is defense against both AD and AP champs. So, can't go wrong. Choose wisely!

Farming

When you are farming in the jungle it is important to make the best use of your passive.

Passive - Ki Barrier (Passive)
After casting a spell, Shen gets a shield. Affecting other champions reduces the cooldown of this effect.

This is important because you have low HP in the beginning of the game and while clearing you are the most vulnerable! Also, your Q and E proc the shield, but not your E until after it comes down. Make sure to be smart when you cast your abilities as they have the longest cool down at early levels. You will have to practice to get the timing, but early, you will have to use your Q 2xs before the passive kicks in at early levels. I recommend that you spam your Q's and save an E for use to proc the shield. If the shield is 3 secs or less from being of CD save the Q. Use your W when you can.

If you are in the enemy jungle, I recommend that you do not us your E to do dmg vs monsters. Use this as your escape. Also, its a good idea to kill the scuttle crab in the river before invading as this can help you escape if you get in trouble and Shen can kill the scuttle pretty fast compared to most other jungles. Denying a blue buff to an enemy jungle that uses mana hurts them really badly with their clear and denying a red buff will make their ganks lackluster.

Team Work

TEAMFIGHTS

This is where Shen shines, in team fights. You goal during the team fights is to do 1 of 3 things.

(1) You can ULT in and surprise the enemy team.
Make sure that when you ult, you prepare to taunt with your E. Also, you want to make sure that you taunt the right person. Preferably not a tank or support. once you taunt them, unload on them and secure the kill.

(2) You are with your team.
Your goal is to be the front man and to peel for your team. Remember you are a juggernaut that can take tons of dmg and also block a ton. Often the goal is to provoke a fight, but the skill comes in when you know how to provoke the right fight the right way. Sometimes you might have to taunt someone out of position, maybe even a tank to help an ally or to initiate a fight. In bronze and silver, getting a fight started is pretty easy. Once someone lands an ability on an opposing teammate people just jump on you. I recommend you will drop your W (or drop it after you taunt the carry, the best option is in the middle of the most people to save yourself or to block dmg for your team) and taunt the ADC or AP carry. Secure the kill and your team with have a huge advantage. Also, keep in mind when you do this method often times you end up taunting the people that jumped on you and the carry. The more enemies that you can successfully taunt the better.

GANKS
Shen shines in ganks too! When ganking post level 6. Most of the time you can take the lane by surprise. Just make sure that you communicate and ping that your ULT is ready before use it. You can save a low health ally and secure the kill in most situations. Shen's ultimate is really strong and can save even the lowest of HP champs at early levels.

Ranked Play

In ranked play, Shen is a force to be reckoned with. They are constantly buffing and nerving him because his kit is so strong for both saving allies and skirmishing. Keep in mind that even though i did mention that you can carry with Shen, there are situations where you want to give your kills to perhaps a struggling ADC or a mid laner. If you have the majority of the kills or 1/3 your teams kills. It is time to get others fed. Even though you are capable of dealing a lot of dmg, you will not be able to deal as much damage as an APC or ADC in the later stages of the game.
