Not Updated For Current Season
The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
I know this build seems strange and gimmicky, but I have run it myself over and over again and it is quite legitimate. It took a hit when heart of golds were nerfed to no longer include armor, but it still works.
REASONS FOR TWO FORCE OF NATURES
I know it seems strange, but it is by far the most magic resist in game, as well as being the only tank item that increases move speed. It is not very expensive, and with two you have an incredible amount of hp5. I know its strange to ignore uniques, but think about it!
REASONS FOR HEARTS OF GOLD
Heart of gold has a price of 825, and a sell price of 412. It gives 5 gold per 10 seconds. At this rate, if you keep a heart of gold for 14 minutes, it will have paid for itself and made a little money. Any time after this is pure profit. And remember, it is not just 5 gold per 10, the extra 250 health is not a joke.
(((825 - 412) / 5) * 10) / 60
Order of items is largely based on opposing team. If they are all physical, Randuin's before force of nature, all magic, double force, etc. The only thing set in stone is to grab the 3 hearts of gold and mercury treads. The health works regardless of opposing team comp, and the 35% reduced cc is incredible.
Sell your hearts of gold to make space, but do not sell them to get an item early! The longer you keep them the better!
Beginning with a regrowth pendant is superior to Doran's shield. It gives double the hp5, which at low levels makes you extremely difficult to harass. On top of this you will have a health pot. 15 hp5 + one health pot can restores nearly 2/3 your health in 20 seconds early game. On top of this, the regrowth pendant then builds into force of nature.
I am aware there is a unique effect on force of nature, however it is by far the most magic resist, as well as by far the most health regen. Two of these and you are 16% faster and immune to magic.
LAST HITTING MATTERS!!!!!
If you last hit well using vorpal blade and ki strike you should be able to get all three hearts of gold as well as boots of speed by minute 16 (earlier if any hero killing is involved). Once you have your three hearts of gold, you will notice that reguardless of farm you will have plenty of money (~150 per minute without creep kills!).
Make sure to grab ghost and teleport as your summoner spells. Teleport as well as Shen's ultimate allows him to be everywhere on the map at once. Ghost will allow you to both chase and run, especially in combination with shadow dash.
Feint is situational, use it sparingly. Energy is better saved for other moves.
Early game vorpal blade is powerful! It can do a lot of damage, as well as allow last hitting in a very aggressive lane.
Taunt should be used whenever enemy champions come in tower range. It forces champions to attack you, causing the tower to attack them. Easily exploitable for early kills even against two champions.
Starting with magic pen is a big deal for early game harass. Vorpal blades do a lot of damage early game, and have very little cool down. Causes Shen to be an early game offensive force, and late game invulnerable giant.
While some may think grabbing health or armor runes is helpful, the fact is they are negligible amounts for a tank. By mid game, an extra 100 health is worthless compared to cool-down reduction.
STORY (JUST FOR FUNZIES :3)
There exists an ancient order originating in the Ionian Isles dedicated to the preservation of balance. Order, chaos, light, darkness -- all things must exist in perfect harmony, for such is the way of the universe. This order is known as the Kinkou and it employs a triumvirate of shadow warriors to uphold its causes in the world. Shen is one of these shadow warriors, entrusted with the sacred duty of Watching the Stars - exercising judgment untainted by prejudice.
Born to a clan whose members have decorated the ranks of the Kinkou for generations, Shen was trained his entire life to become the Eye of Twilight, and thereupon to dispassionately determine what must be done in the interests of equilibrium. As his final trial to ascend to this position, he was made to attend the Takanu, a ceremony in which his father was tortured before his eyes to test his resolve. Any reaction whatsoever would have resulted in his immediate disqualification, but he never averted his gaze and never blinked, not once. As the Eye of Twilight, Shen must make decisions which would buckle the wills of ordinary men, removing all emotion from the equation. He now works with his fellows Akali and Kennen to enforce the balance of Valoran. This hallowed pursuit has unsurprisingly led the triumvirate to the Fields of Justice.
The word "Shen" literally means "God" in Cambodian and Chinese.
"There is no dispute." appears to be a reference to the ongoing debate of pirates versus ninja.
"If light travels so fast, how come it's never caught a ninja?" is a direct reference to the Ask A Ninja web series.
"You're already dead, you just haven't caught up yet." is a reference to Kenshiro from the Fist of the North Star franchise.
Shen is currently the only Ninja to not have his face revealed via a skin. (Kennen's Karate Skin and Akali's Soccer skin, respectively, revealed their faces.)
Shen was designed by Guinsoo . Ironically enough, Shen says "Guinsoo" when ulting.
Shen was one of the champions chosen for the Ionian pool available during the 2010 Ionian Versus Noxus Grudge Match. However, he ended up being the ban choice by Noxus.
