Not Updated For Current Season
The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
I play Shyvana as a bruiser (tanky damage dealer), mostly solotop, though the same setup can be used to jungle (switching Cleanse for Smite). I choose defensive masteries and items because this makes her hard to kill when in dragon form, while still dealing a decent amount of AOE damage. I will provide more details on her skills and build in the sections below.
Shyvana is an auto-attack champion, this means most of her abilities benefit from a high attack speed.
Her Q ability (Twin Bite) receives a 0.5 second cooldown reduction for each successful auto-attack.
The duration of her W ability (Burnout) is refreshed upon a successful auto-attack, allowing a maximum duration of 9 seconds, leading to an effective cooldown of 3 seconds.
Her E ability (Flame Breath) will apply an extra 15% of it's damage on every hit.
Her ultimate (Dragon's Descent) requires a full rage bar to cast, faster attacks will fill up the rage bar quicker. Additionally she will be able to remain in dragon form indefinitely, provided she attacks fast enough and keeps attacking.
Because of this I pick 9 attack speed Marks and 3 attack speed Quints. I feel the Marks are necessary but the Quints may be swapped for armor pen. or something defensive.
The main reason I pick defensive masteries is because I don't feel she deals enough damage to warrant an all out offense build.
Another important factor to consider is her ultimate, which doubles all defensive bonuses received from items. This effect has very good synergy with defensive masteries, making her hard to kill in dragon form.
Her Q ability provides a nice damage burst, and for that reason I pick the armor pen. mastery over the spell pen. one.
The items listed are the "standard build" I would go for in a game. It revolves around making sure every item provides synergy with at least one of her skills, keeping in mind her ultimate doubles all defensive bonuses.
As can be seen, you gain a total of 79 MR (not taking Wit's End stacks into account) and 108 Armor, doubled to 158 MR and 216 Armor respectively. For even more defense, Atma's Impaler could be dropped for Guardian Angel or Force of Nature if required.
I feel Phage > Frozen Mallet is necessary because Shyvana lacks any form of CC, the extra health and AD are also welcome. Sunfire Cape works nicely with her E ability and ultimate, while also providing a nice health bonus.
I pick Ghost over Flash because I hate it when my dragon gets stuck on minions. In addition it stacks nicely with her W ability (Burnout). Flash is fine too.
Cleans is nice versus champions who can taunt or disable, you are able to immediately break free and pursue or retreat as needed. This can be swapped out for Exhaust, providing some good CC.
