Masteries
Sion
This guide will show you how do build an all out AP build for Sion. AP Sion is very powerful at all stages to the game. If you have any questions about the guide let me know. Please Rate so I know what you think.
Intro
Most people see
Sion as a tank or an off tank. Due to his unique skill set it seems like a waste to tank with Sion. Sion does massive damage to enemy champions due to his
Death's Caress and
Cryptic Gaze. The two abilities deal its preset damage plus 100% of ability power. When you start getting your items your combo will be deadly. This guide is more helpful if you have a good start than if you are having a very slow start. If you're having a bad game early on, you won't want to do this. A few kills early on should suffice in getting you the gold you need to be successful. Once you get ahead of the people in your lane you will begin to dominate your opponents.
Skill Sequence
Sion's ultimate,
Cannibalism is not incredibly important for AP Sion to have. You should not be spamming melee attacks to heal teammates. Sion is not effective trying to do that. The first skill you want to max out is
Death's Caress, this can help you clear minion waves and kill enemy champions. You want to start with
Cryptic Gaze, this is useful for harassment and for giving you time to use you
Death's Caress.
Enrage is the last thing you max out. It is what will give you sustainability, you can easily get to 3,000 health with this activated. One thing you can do is get
Cannibalism level 1 after you max
Cryptic Gaze then the last 2 levels at 17 and 18. You can max out you're other abilities instead of getting your ultimate that doesn't really help you out.
Items and Explanation
Doran's Ring is very useful early game. The mana regen is very important for your spells, the health and AP is very helpful too. On your first time back you want to get a
Blasting Wand and
Boots of Speed. Next you want to try to stay in lane until you can get a
Needlessly Large Rod. Third time back finish you
Rabadon's Deathcap. Next time back get your
Sorcerer's Shoes, the extra magic penetration can be very useful in melting away an enemy's health. Next you want to work on a
Deathfire Grasp, this gives you AP, mana regen, and a great active. After that you can get a
Morello's Evil Tome, this gives AP, mana regen, and cooldown reduction. Morello's was taken out of main item build to be more cost effective.
Situational items
If your good with Sion and your first few minutes in lane go well, a Mejai's is a great option. The build order for this would most likely be
Doran's Ring>
Mejai's Soulstealer>
Sorcerer's Shoes>then procede with regular build.
would be very useful after
Morello's Evil Tome as you would have 530-540 AP and would be able to one hit enemy champions with you're main 2 spells and a melee.
Another Deathcap would put you at 720 AP, (if you got Lich Bane as well) would make you absolutely devastating.
Zhonya's Hourglass would is good against AD character and grants you a lot of AP.
Abyssal Scepter gives magic resistance as well as AP.
This item is very useful if your enemies catch on to you and get magic resistance. This will do a great job of canceling out more of an enemy tanks magic resistance.
These 2 items are useful for the same purpose, chasing people down.
Boots of Swiftness are useful for straight up extra speed, while
Boots of Mobility give you extra speed when out of combat to help you get to fights faster or chase down enemies when your shield is active. It takes a second or two, but after you use your shield you gain the +5 speed boost. They quite useful in roaming, getting from place to place faster is important.
Hextech Gunblade is a very good item that has many benefits. Some of these benefits include AP, attack, a great active, and a spell vamp.
If your dying a lot earlier on or aren't good at controlling your mana you may want to trade out the
Rabadon's Deathcap for a
Rod of Ages. If you need the extra help, you have plenty of time to realize because
Rod of Ages contains a
Blasting Wand.
Runes
The runes is pretty simple, you want a lot of AP early on. The Runes along side the Ignite buff in masteries gives a lot of AP off the start making kills easier to get. Magic Penetration runes are very helpful to get through that magic resistance and deal extra damage. The flat mana regen runes are helpful when you need them. The mana regen helps early on when you are mana deprived, after
Rabadon's Deathcap you get much more regen from items.
Team Work
During team battles Sion isl surrounding enemies. He can be the initiator with the stun from
Cryptic Gaze. If you got a
Hextech Gunblade,
Cannibalism will be much more effective, gaining you and teammates extra health. With his two abilities,
Cryptic Gaze and
Death's Caress, alongside the active from
Deathfire Grasp, Sion should be able to take one person out by himself. Sion is not a great character in team battles as he does burst damage, but he deals huge amounts of damage when he does attack.
Summoner Spells
Flash and
Ignite are very helpful in their own ways.
Flash can be helpful in chasing people who are trying to escape as well as flashing into range of people who try to flash from you.
Ignite is very helpful in getting kills on enemies with low health. Other useful spells include
Heal and
Ghost.
Play Style
First things first you are not a melee character, don't try to hack away at an enemy champion. Early game your job is harassment and trying to get early kills, or assist in getting early kills. Stun enemies with your
Cryptic Gaze for harassment to scare them off. After getting to level 9 you should have level 5
Death's Caress and should deal massive amount of damage. Mid Game you should start going in, after you get
Rabadon's Deathcap you'll deal massive amount of damage with your 2 spells. Do not waste your ultimate on minions, a good uses are killing the dragon, getting yourself blue buff, and to heal teammates. Late game you should be unstoppable in 1 vs 1 situations. Team fights stun 1 champion then nuke them, back out and do it again. Since you can be mana deprived with this build get the blue buff whenever you can.
IMPORTANT!!!
As you can see by the items chosen, Sion does not have a lot of mana in this build. You must conserve mana and use
Cryptic Gaze and
Death's Caress skills at opportune moments. Poking in with the stun is very effective. If you spam too much, you will be mana deprived quite frequently. Once you get
Deathfire Grasp your mana will regenerate much faster allowing you to do even more damage. This mana regeneration allows you to get much more gold as you can 1 shot full waves of minions with
Death's Caress.
Summary
This is a very strong build. Once you get the hang of it, you will do very good. This is not necessarily a beginners guide but can be figured out very easily. I don't play a lot of ranked games, if you do and have success with this build let me know how it works out.
