The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
First of all this build will include a Tank build, an Ability Power build and an Attack damage build.
here is a screenshot of my game as Tank Skarner.

This build is focused on tank skarner mostly. I will only discuss of other build in the items section.
Pros / Cons
-great survival overall
-good jungle/lane farmer
-great tanking skills
-pro damages for a tank
-suppress/drag spell on a tank?! WHAT!
-UR THE SCORPION KING!
-****ty mana pool/regen overall (without Tears of the Goddess)
-your kinda squishy early game
These runes are a personal choice, i get 21 runes of MR to balance with the armor.
9 AP glyphs because AP on Tank Skarner is just awesome (more heal off fracture, bigger shield off exoskeleton, more AOE threat off you slash and last but not least, more pressure off your ultimate!).
That pretty much conclude for the runes!
Feel free to try whatever please you!
Well obvious choices.
-Spell pen for your dps
-CDR (Cooldown Reduction) for your damage again
-AP for the survival/dps
-Armor/MR/dodge/health/damage reduction % for your tankiness
-And why Strenght of spirit? Because i use Tears of the Goddess in my build and 2k+ mana = 20+
health per 5 seconds. combined with Force of Nature = awesomeness.
First off, i rush for Tear of the Goddess. Skarner is an abilities spammer and his mana pool is such a ***** all game (to me at least). with early tears your mana pool is nearly infinite early/mid/late game.
When you got it, you have 2 choice of boots :
- Mercury's Treads, for CC/caster heavy teams.
- Ninja Tabi, for Melee heavy teams.
3rd item, all depends on opposite team. if its auto-attacker heavy team i rush Thornmail.
Force of Nature, if they have 3+ casters.
Sunfire Cape best 3rd item vs balanced teams, good health/armor boost and the damage per second of Sunfire Cape just mitigate like a charm with your slash.
Warmog's Armor, whats better than warmog to beef you up???
Archangel's Staff, i usually get this after unless you have trouble taking damages. If so, delay it for w/e u didnt pick as your 3rd item (Sunfire cape or Force of Nature or Thornmail)
for your last items just insert what you didnt pick up yet.
as always when i play Skarner... Tear of the Goddess. Faster your boost your mana, the better you can spam your abilities.
2nd item is boots
- Sorcerer's Shoes if your not too much getting focused get these but usually i have to get mercury or Tabi.
- Ninja Tabi my favorite choice. Perfect with your Nimbleness mastery.
- Mercury's Treads just when they have way too much Ability power characters or mass Crowd control effects.
3rd and 4th item are too items that gets you a super beefy AP.
First i get Rod of Ages since you wanna stack the passive as soon as possible and then i get to Rylai's Crystal Scepter, more health, good Ability power boost and you slow with all your spells now.
Now that your done getting beefy, lets finish that tear of the goddess. Archangle's Staff
great AP boost since your Tear of the Goddess gives you 1000 mana, your Rod of Ages gives you like 725 mana. Which gets you to like 3000 mana (2% of 3000 = 60AP)
What now? MOAR AP Rabadon's Deathcap. a Steroid to your AP and the spellvamp is a little extra.
Last item is an idea, never got to my 6th item as AP Skarner. I guessed Hextech would fit good. gives you AD and AP (both boost your slash and AP boost all of your spells), more spellvamp and lifesteal.
The AD build is an experimental build, it has not been fully tested and is a build idea i had. Feel free to comment on w/e build you try.
Fracture is my top skill as tank.
Perfect lane sustain with your Crystal Slash.
Then i tend to lvl Slash and Shield by near the same lvl, i always get 1 Slash lvl over Shield.
Flash or Ghost pick up whichever one fits you beter
Exhaust because after you ult and drag your target, you can exhaust him when the suppress is off, which drastically drop his chances of survival
Im not gonna say much on optional spells, these 2 spells are too important to me.
How to play Skarner ?
heres a quick summary of Skarner :
You gotta spam your Slash to slow/chase your enemies down and damage em LIKE A BOSS. Do not forget, Slash only slows if your charged (your charged for like 4 seconds after every slashes).
Exoskeleton has many uses:
-Shield to absorb damages
-Run speed to escape/chase
-attack speed to get your cooldowns back faster (your passive gives you cooldown reduction
for every auto-attack you land, good when chasing, you can spam your abilities a lot more
Fracture is used as an harrassing tool and/or survival ability (you heal when you hit targets afflicted by Fracture)
**NOTE** When you use Crystal Slash, you gain health from targets marked by Fracture when u aoe them.
Impale, prolly your best/funnyest spell ever. You will have fun impaling a fleeing enemy and dragging them back to your friends while doing a good damage burst to them. Also used to supress a major threat champion off your squishies!
