Not Updated For Current Season
The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
Just remember, this is just one style of how to play Sona, this build have worked well for me in the past. Now im playing her more like 100% support. This way she is very fun to play too!
This is my first guide ever, so dont be too hard on me.
I'm going to introduce to you my way of playing Sona, Maven of the Strings. I have been playing LoL about a year now, and I main support champions. Sona was the first support I played and I fell in love right away. I have always been playing her as AP champion, not a 100% support.
I love AP Sona, because she heals well and also does quite a bit damage too. Of course she is weak at the beginning and in some games enemies always focus her. (Most of games they're not.. weird.) But besides her weakness she gets away of a ganks easily with her E spell, ulti and flash.
Item sequence at top of the page is situational and can change depending on the game, as well as skill sequence. Ill try to explain some situations at the chapters below. So its not always the same build every game.
Edit 11/11/12: Changed CV as main spell on the top of the page.
Edit 12/11/12: Updated the guide for new patch.
Playing as support
As a support, you are not there to kill champions or farm minons, you're there to support your team, heal them and try to get them safe if they're chased. It's your job mostly to buy wards and keep at least Baron and dragon warded when it comes to Mid Game. But of course your team should buy some wards too, especially at laning phase.
I myself keep helping my lane partner to get last hits on minons as much as possible. You can also scare enemies a bit if possible. But your main job is to keep your lane partner full hp and always make sure you have little mana to emergency heals and let your mate know if you are low on mana so he/she dont push too much.
Sona can be a killer too, but try preferably give the kills for carrys of your team. Ofc it happens that you get a kill, and it's up to your team if they rage about it. Just ignore them and keep playing.
I like to get almost full AP rune set for Sona. You will have notable AP at start and every lvl it gets higher.
Greater Mark of Insight
Greater Seal of Potency
Greater Glyph of Force
Greater Quintessence of Potency
Also mana regen and cooldown reduction works great with Sona. It's jut what you like to get.
I have used magic pene marks, mana regen per level seals, and cooldown reduction glyphs and magic pene quints on Sona, they have worked too, if you are not willing to use AP runes.
I use 8/0/22 masteries. I wont say lot about them.
I think utility tree is best for supports, it gives more gold with assists and more starting gold which is good especially in ranked, when u have enough money for ward right at the beginning.
Also more mana regen and cooldown reduction, which i take on offense build too. I think vision range for wards can be handy too, you can still change that. Buff duration mastery can be useful, because Sona is good with blue buff, but its not necessary.
These are my choises, u can always make changes if you think something is more useful to you.
Clarity is good for normal games, and when you have many mana users in your team. Especially on your lane, you can be in lane much longer when you have this. Its also good in emergencies, when you need mana fast to save your team mates.
Flash is always a good choice. You can get away from ganks easily. And with Sona its usually you who gets focused on ganks.
This is a must for ranked game supporting, no one else usually doesnt get it. So you should. It can reveal an incoming gank, or jungler in a spot.
This is nowadays a must for support. Exhaust can save your AD carry at lane phase, and its useful on teamfight when there's deadly targets.
These are my choises, i think Sona doesnt need any else. Of course sometimes AD carry you are supporting asks you to change summoner spells to fit their playstyle. If you think its a good idea, go for it.
I start with Faerie Charm, which i build right away to Tear of the Goddess at first trip to base. I take one mana potion and vision ward. Health potions arent that necessary, if you get some mana, because you have your heal of course! All this you can afford with your mastery choises.
These are my core items of almost every build I play. Rylai's gives a nice bit of hp and slow enemies when you hit them. Boots are necessary for cooldown reduction.
Soulstealer is good, if your team is doing great. It gives nice bit of AP. I have had this on Sona many times with 20 stacks. You get the stacks from assists pretty easily. This may not be the item for ranked tho.
Deathcap gives you a very effective AP boost if needed.
Morello's Evil Tome gives a bit AP and also cooldown reduction, which is very useful on Sona in my opinion.
Archangel's Staff gives you mana regen and AP too. I usually dont even get this done when im playing.
I usually dont go with Rod Of Ages, but this can be also good choise if u need some health and mana.
Lich Bane gives a bit mana and MR, and the on hit effect does much damage with your passive (Q spell on).
Hourglass is good item, if the other team has AD and/or they are focusing you. Active can save you long enough that you can at least cast your ulti or get away perhaps.
Scepter is a good item if the other team has AP mages that are doing good. It also gives nice aura, that reduces enemies magic resist.
Abilities and sequence
Power Chord (Passive)
After casting 3 spells, Sona's next attack deals bonus magic damage. Additionally, Sona's Auras persist for 3 seconds after deactivating and set off a 2 second global cooldown. Power Chord has an additional effect depending on which spell was cast last.
For harassement, use Hymn of valor before your passive, its best that your Valor hits the enemy and then passive right after that, it takes nice piece of squishy champions health away. Song of Celerity will slow the enemy. This is good to cast if enemy is getting away from your team.
It took some time from me to learn use these additional effects properly. But its great passive.
You can get the passive ready at your spawning pool when the game starts to get the edge at lane. Just cast your spell 3 times and you are ready to go.
Hymn Of Valor
Sona plays the Hymn of Valor, granting nearby allied champions bonus Damage and Ability Power. Additionally, casting this ability sends out bolts of sound, dealing magic damage to the nearest two enemy champions or minions. If this spell was last cast when Sona's Power Chord is ready, her next attack will do double the damage of her Power Chord.
Aria of Perseverance
Sona plays the Aria of Perseverance, granting nearby allied champions bonus Armor and Magic Resist. Additionally, casting this ability sends out healing melodies, healing Sona and a nearby wounded ally. If this spell was last cast when Sona's Power Chord is ready, her next attack will de-buff the target to deal less damage.
Song of Celerity
Sona plays the Song of Celerity, granting nearby allied champions bonus Movement Speed. Additionally, casting this ability energizes nearby allies with a burst of speed. If this spell was last cast when Sona's Power Chord is ready, her next attack will slow the target.
Sona plays her ultimate chord, forcing enemy champions to dance (stun) and magic damage over time.
Skill sequence at top of the build is usually useful. Altought it depens on situation. If you and your lane partner are losing much health, i recommend maxing heal as soon as possible. Also get at least one point to your E spell before lvl 6, since it can help a little to get away from gank, or speed your team up to get the kill.
Like I said earlier, your job is to support your mate at same lane. You keep him/her full hp as good as you can and let last hits for him. You can autoattack minions to help your buddy to kill them faster and even cast your Q on full hp minions. Just make sure you always have mana for heals too, damage isnt your main job. And let your buddy know, if you are out of mana so he wont push too hard.
You can also scare enemies to back off a little, OF COURSE DEPENDING WHO ARE YOU AGAINST. If there's not so heavy dps/stuns, you can harass a bit with your Q and passive to keep them away from minions. Still dont get too pushy.
Use wards while laning phase is on. If opposite team doesnt have jungler, only a ward at dragon/baron (depending which side you are on) is enough so you can see if they are coming to gank you. If they have a jungler, you might need ward at your towers nearest bush (at jungle side) to make sure theres not an enemy.
Anyhow, everytime you return to base, take at least few wards. This is a great thing to learn when playing a support. You are responsible for wards, so learn to take those everytime you shop.
Teamfights / Saving your teammates
Try to use your ultimate Crescendo in teamfights, when you can get most of the enemies on it at once. Or at least try to hit their most lethal targets. Sona's ultimate can turn things around completely, your team can just nuke them while they are stunned. Best is if it hits almost all of them when you can pick the most squishy and deadliest targets and kill them before they can do anything.
SAVING YOUR TEMMATES
Sometimes you see your teammates in trouble. If they are close enough, you can run towards them, then use your heal and speed spells so your team mate can get away. If theres great danger, then you can throw your ulti at your enemies face and then escape with E and W. This is also good when someone is ganking you. Try to help your teammates to last breath.
Still remember to consider if it is worth it to rescue them (1 teammate in trouble), dont set yourself in danger, at least like that when you and your teammate both die for it. If you die for your teammate, that's cool. Its more important that your carry survives.
Hope you get some picture of playing Sona from this guide.
Ill just say Sona is great fun in normal games if your team is good. And I have also played few rankeds with this and the stats you can see above, not so bad.
Hope you like it and drop comments and advices below.
