Question: i wonna play a killing machine! Should i play Sona?
Answer: NO!
Question: I want that enemies kinda ignore me cause they think i'm invulnerable or too hard to kill! Should i take Sona?
Answer: NO!

Sona is one of the most unbalanced char that u can play; she stole amumu ulti, taric's aura and soraka's heal: if this is not enough, the "aura" of Sivir's ulti is, for Sona, maybe the weakest spell she got.
The point is that you are playing a support with AoE stun and probably u'll be the main target of enemies.
Itemization is then, imo, quite easy. To maximize your supporting value, i start with mana manipulator that helps u and your ally in line. At the beginning most guide suggest to use your Hymn to last hit minion, but honestly i do not care about that: infact Hymn hit champions, if in range, and having a support in line means that the dmg that u take, is "healable" while the dmg u make, is quite net (only pot can help the enemies). So i start quite defencive using Hymn to dmg enemies forcing them to leap on their turret without getting any last hit. In that way they do not make money and soon they will be forced to go back to heal while u can keep staying in line with your ally hitting/destroying their turret.
When enemy turret is down, u should be about lvl 6/7: move back, buy Innervating Locket, and help getting down mid turret.
From now on, u'll probably be the 1st target: as soon as u can, go back and buy Boots of Swiftness (most would say that Mercury's tread would be better, but as long as u got cleanse+flash.. having a reduce and cc effect is kinda useless).
As long as u get the Innervating, u just have to spam all the spell on cd, and u just have to get the items that most fit with this supporting playing. Ryalai's is definitelly good cause it slow on your Hymn, increase your healing and boost your hp. U'll take a TONS of assist, so taking the Warmong is definetelly a good choise to make yourself less tasty at your enemie's eye. Last 2 items looks more like "a wish" list for Santa Claus than a real possibility, but then u can get whatever fit with your play style
