Sona is in my opinion the best support champion in League of Legends. She has skills for every situation her team encounters- damage, heal, movement speed and stun. All of her attacks can be used either offensively or defensively and that is what makes Sona so great. Her heal isnt as great as Sorakas but then again Sona has shorter cooldown and hear heal grants also more defense to her allies plus it heals Sona as well. Wisely played Sona can make her team invincible and a total killer army, but without a good team Sona cant do much. Its all about teamwork and communicating with your team. Getting blue buff for mana is important but it is extremely difficult (not to mention time consuming) for her to solo it.
In the mid&late game, after you have efficient mana pool, KEEP CASTING! Do-not-stop-casting!

+ Able to change the whole course of the battle with her auras and ulti
+ Able to stay in lane 24/7
+ Makes an OK team to an Amazing team
+ Super short cooldowns (CDR!!)
- Mana problems in the beginning
- Needs a large mana pool to be effective (Sona should NEVER run out of mana- without it she is useless!)
- Often targeted, since she is the most amazing support, she must die first in order to get the rest of the team killed as well. :P
One can easily overcome manaproblems. As the first buys I recommend getting a meki pendant and mana pot + health pot. In my build I always like to get Tear of Goddess at the same time with Boots of Swiftness as my first items when I recall to town the first time with 1 600 golds. Later in the game Tear of Goddess can be upgraded into Archangel's Staff, but I often find that the tear is plenty enough with the maga regen I get with the rest of my items.
Since Sona is such an uber support, the enemy team will ofcourse want her dead as soon as possible. Remember to position urself as Sona wisely. Learn Sonas skill ranges and try to stay behind your team, and only coming further for poking enemy champions with your Q paired up with your passive or to use your ulti to stun the enemies. I have sometimes used Sonas ulti to initiate the battle (for example when you are playing with champions like Cho, Veigar, Singed, Kog etc who have either AoE stuns or slows, Sona can easily go throw her ulti and run out and let her team kill dancing enemies and let them use their stunning/slowing skills as a chain reaction. The enemies are dead before they even realize what happened. This, ofcourse, requires communicating with your team, so if you are playing with people who dont talk much, stay in the backround and support, and ulti when someone is trying to escape).
Sonas passive skill, Power Chord, deals extra damage (14 + (9 x level) magic damage) to target on every fourth attack. This attack has slightly different effect depending on the skill the summoner cast last. Using Sonas basic attack sets off a small cooldown to her other 2 attacks (Q, W, E).
Hymn of Valor (Q) Activating your Q skill deals magic damange to two nearest enemy champions or minions and sends additional attack/magic damage aura (8 / 11 / 14 / 17 / 20) to nearby allied champions.
Activating Hym of Valor deals 50 / 100 / 150 / 200 / 250 (+0.7 per ability power) magic damage. If Q is used when your passive Power Chord is on, Sonas attack will do double the damage of the Power Chord.
Aria of Perseverance (W) This is probably the skill Sona is most well-known. Casting this skill heals both Sona and the closest champion who has the lowest health for 35 / 70 / 105 / 140 / 175 (+0.35 per ability power). Aria of Perseverance also sends out extra armor and magic resistance aura (8 / 11 / 14 / 17 / 20).
If W is activated when Sonas passive Power Chord is on, Sonas next attack will debuff the enemy champion (if the enemy champion is targeted next) making him/her deal 20% less damage for 4 seconds.
Sonas heal has a rather poor AP scaling. Getting insane amounts of AP mostly boosts your Q and R.
Song of Celerity (E) Song of Celerity seems to be the least appreciated support skill Sona has for some reason. Casting this skill grants Sona and her nearby allied champions extra movement speed (8 / 11 / 14 / 17 / 20) plus on activation a burst movement speed (6 / 8 / 10 / 12 / 14%) for 1.5s. The burst movement speed on activation also speeds up nearby allied minions, but the movement speed aura doesnt affect minions.
If E is activated when Sonas passive Power Chord is on, Sonas next attack will slow the targets moving speed for 40% for 2 seconds.
Crescendo (R) Sonas ultimate is AoE type of stun. When Sona casts her ulti, the enemy champions are forced to drop everything and dance while stunned, taking also magic damage over time (150 / 250 / 350 (+0.8 per ability power) for 1.5 seconds.
Remember to always use your passive Power Chord attacks on enemy champions. This is what makes or breaks Sona and separates the Good Sonas from the Great Sonas.
3 out of 4 skills Sona has cant be targeted, so positioning is the key for a successful Sona.
Hymn of Valor (Q) Sona doesnt have that great damage output, so keep in mind that your job in your team is to mainly support. Sonas Q skill paired with her passive makes a very nice damage burst that most enemy champions dont see coming, as the enemy champions often underestimate her.
When the game starts, in case you picked Q as your first skill, cast it in the base to get your passive ready. This might lead to getting First Blood fast in your lane with ur laning partner.
Keep in mind this skill targets the 2 closest enemy targets- minions or champions! Because of this positioning Sona is important in early-game harassing. Sonas skills have a great range, but if the enemy champion is behind his minions, Sonas Q will only hit the minions.
As said before, Sonas healing skill Aria of Perseverance (W) will heal herself and the nearest wounded allied champion who has the lowest health. With wise positioning Sona may be able to heal the one you want, but it is rather difficult in a hectic battle. Keep spamming your skills and use your W every time its ready. If you used healing when Sonas passive was ready, target the enemy champion who is the biggest threat to your team next and attack him; this will make him deal less damage for 4 seconds.
Using Song of Celerity (E) to catch up fleeing enemy (use the movement speed burst that Sona and nearby allies get to your advantage untill you get your passive ready), and right after that attack the enemy to slow him down by 40%. The E skill paired up with Shurelya's Reveries active ("nearby champions gain 40% movement speed for 3 seconds (60 second cooldown") will enable Sona and her team to either get to the escaping enemies fast or get away from ganks fast
Sonas ultimate skill Crescendo (R) is very, very useful and can change the course of the whole battle to your teams advantage. Crescendo is effective stun, which also makes the enemy champions to drop everything what they were doing, and start dancing. This skill can be used both offensively and defensively. Escaping ganks at low levels or going in for a gank is a place for Sona to use her ulti. Try to hit as many enemy champions with it as possible, auto-attack and use your W.
In the early game stunning enemys at your tower (try to time it right, so the turret will attack the enemies as well), auto attacking and using Hymn of Valor (Q) will quite possibly lead into kill or assist.
Harassing with Sona
If Sona is paired up with a melee champion and the enemies both are melee as well, Sona can easily keep them away and pick off their HP. Position yourself wisely and dont let the enemies come close to get creep kills or the XP. Again the Hymn of Valor (Q) with passive will make rather insane damage burst compared to her normal auto-attack that most are not expecting. Use Sonas attackrange to your advantage and keep the enemies in their turret.
Keep in mind that alltho Sona is pretty good at harassing early-game, she is squishy, really squishy especially against 2 enemy champs. Plus constant casting can lead into OOM very easily.
Escaping with Sona
After getting your ulti you dont have to worry too much about ganks. Keep an eye on the minimap to see if someone is missing and communicate with your team to see if, for example, someone is missing from mid. If you see a gank coming up, simply ulti Crescendo (R) + Song of Celerity (E) (movement speed burst + buff) to get back to your turret fast.
Later on, keep spamming E when you need to get somewhere fast if your Teleport summoner skill is on cooldown. With the movement speed burst and additional speed buff you will get to the place very fast.
Escaping ganks are just as easy or hard for Sona as for other champions with a few exceptions (such as Twitch or Evelynn with stealth). I often hear or read how people think her escaping mechanisms are bad, but i disagree. With her ulti and speed burst + buff and Shurelya's Reverie Sona has no problems at all running away. If she (or any other champion for that matter) is stunned, however, escaping gets stickier. If you are extremely worried of being ganked, buy some wards.
Supporting with Sona
After getting efficient mana pool, cast 24/7! if you still find yourself struggling with mana, ask your team mates to help you get the blue buff. Oom Sona is useless Sona.
After casting one aura to another the first aura persist for 2 seconds after deactivating (meaning for 2 seconds you have 2 auras on). In team fights keep switching your aura from Q (damage aura) and W (heal/defense aura) to keep your enemy up and fighting. Use your ulti wisely and if the fight goes bad, E your team back to safety quick. If you bought Shurelya's Reverie, remember to use the speed bonus as well for quick escape.
