This build is for true support and keeping up with gold, It will help your fellow team members with wards and the items you need with no champion kills and minion kills. As its obvious you cant have any kind of kills playing a support class.
Starting Gold making with no items = 6.75 gold every 10 seconds.
Philosopher's Stone = 5 gold every 10 seconds.
Heart of gold = 5 gold every 10 seconds.
Kage's Lucky Pick = 5 gold every 10 seconds.
Total gold making with these items = 21.75 gold every 10 seconds.
Don't forget the extra gold from Mercenary every time you get an assist.
Between the runes and masteries you will have some tanky-ness to you and will make the gold you need.
Pros / Cons
Pros- you will not have to worry about gold.
you will have enough gold for items and plenty of wards
GOLD IS NOT A PROBLEM
Cons- its a rough build and will have to be careful with mana management.
It may seem a little slow but it just cascades into the gold.
The runes I chose are for survivability and making you more Gold. Extra armor and magic resistance is great to keep you from having to waste Mana on healing yourself to often. The runes are part of what makes this build, make sure you have all the gold making runes (very important).
Greater Quintessence of Avarice = 3 gold every 10 seconds.
Greater Seal of Avarice = 2.25 gold every 10 seconds.
Don't need to go into it to much, its basically giving you more health, mana regeneration, armor and magic resistance, with a little extra ward distance.
The important Masterie is Mercenary (24 extra gold every assist) all you do as a support is get assists so why not get some benefits.
The second is Greed (1.5 gold every 10 seconds)
I know you can get 2 gold from Greed but Mercenary needs that point to get 24 gold not 16 gold on assists.
This is straight forward, flash to get away or for that perfect Crescendo.
Clairvoyance is to peek at spots in the map, very useful for when you need to look at an area you did not ward (shame on you).
If you don't like Clairvoyance for any reason then try Heal, combined with the shield of Locket of the Iron Solari can make the group hard to kill.
I also recommend Exhaust to support your Ad-carry a little more.
These are the only ones I recommend with Sona: Flash, Clairvoyance, Heal, and Exhaust.
Creeping / Jungling
DONT DO IT! That's all there is to this!
This is not required! in fact laugh at everyone for having to do it. (j/k)
creep killing takes the much needed farm from your AD-carry, so don't be surprised when you have 10 minion kills at the end of the game.
These are my recommendations.
Faerie Charm and 3 Wards is the way to go as you will get the extra 620 gold for philosopher's stone in no time. as soon as you have the 620 gold go back and buy the philosophers stone and if you happen to wait a little longer, pick up some wards and/or mana pots if you feel you need them.
Boots and Heart of Gold should be your next buy, normally for me its boots and a Ruby Crystal which is 825 gold or you could wait a little longer and get the 1175 for both, it just depends on the game sometimes you can wait it out and sometimes you just need those boots. always buy wards when you go back even if its just 1.
The next item should be Kage's Lucky Pick and finishing boots. As far as boots go look at the team you are facing, if you are having trouble with "CC" then get Mercury's Treads. If all is good in heaven and earth then get Ionian Boots of Lucidity for the cooldown reduction.
Once you have the big 4 Phil, heart, pick, and boots build Locket of the iron Solari the health and armor will give you a little more survivability and health Regen plus the shield to your allies.
The shield you get from solari is overlooked by almost everyone, its basically a shield that absorbs 230 points of damage. A shield goes to each ally in the area when you cast it, for a total of 1150 group damage absorption which can be cast every 60 seconds.
Chalice of harmony is the next buy after solari followed by Aegis of the legion and the finishing chalice into Athene's Unholy Grail for some Ability Power magic resistance and mana regen.
The finishing items are all up to you depending on the game you are having, but these are some more team oriented item i recommend. If you have a lot of AD champs go with Zeke's Herald which is more health plus more cooldown reduction and your allies get 12% life steal and 20% attack speed. Frozen heart for more armor, mana cooldown reduction and an Aura that lowers enemy's attack speed by 20%.
Banshee's Veil for more protection, Zhonya's hourglass if you are being focused hard and cant seem to get away.
There is an item that people recommended that is not on my list because I am not a fan of it. Its Shurelya's Reverie which is build from philosopher's stone, you get health 330, health Regen +30, mana Regen +15 every 5 seconds and 15% cooldown reduction. plus an activation that gives you and allies 60% movement speed for 3 seconds and can be cast every 60 seconds. I would rather have Athene's Unholy Grail and solari which give you better benefits.
Things to Remember
You are not a tank, assassin, or carry!
-you are support so don't ever take kills from your allies that includes champion and minions.
-positioning is everything, don't get caught out of place or you will probably die or worse get your team killed.
-Don't ever try to kill enemy champs on your own.
-Always buy wards, you will have the gold and map awareness usually wins games.
-Remember to have fun. :) support character and player are great!
