Where to play Talon ?

#1 Mid!: Why ? The silence is the best counter for a mid champion. Slow, Silence, Stealth and Good damage output, makes this guy a great counter for most mid champions. Though, he of course, can get countered by too many Crowd Controls.
He's one good point in this line.

#2 Solo Top!: Why ? Even though most of the tanks going there have a good advantage over him, if you know how to move, you can get through that, kill them with the help of your jungle, and counter their hardiness. It's not Talon's strong lane, although he can do very, very good here.

#3 Jungle!: Why ? He's got some freaking good ganks, not to talk about that Red Buff, wich provides an EVEN greater slow. Stealth, speed, CC and good damage output, almost all you want for a jungle. There's a big problem though, he's too squishy, and I mean it. So squishy you can die in the jungle, if you don't know how to handle him. If you want some tips, keep reading this guide, and you'll see you can do VERY good with him as a jungler. Good ganks, poor sustain jungle.

*- Pros & Cons

.............. .... Why to play him ?
Pros
  • Talon is a very good ganker, his Rake has some good Slow, his Cutthroat silences, wich can provide a good teamfight engage, or a nicely done gank.
  • He's got a great ability of killing squishies, using his ultimate, and specially his Cutthroat, to avoid them from using any heals, or abilities to escape.
  • A quite nice mobility, specially with this build.
  • Also a good anti-ranged fellow.
  • Nice cooldowns.


.............. .... What to be careful with ?
Cons
  • He's very squishy, at least before getting your Bloodthirster.
  • Quite item reliant. Without some kills, or good farm, you're worthless.
  • If not used correctly, he's a squishy jungle.
  • Often suffers mana problems.

Countering
  • Talon has some good weapons, one of them being his silence. Versus mages, it's lethal, remember that.
  • Squishy heroes, or heroes with a lot of skillshot abilities also have a very HARD time against Talon.
  • Slow heroes will also suffer against Talon's great speed, specially with this build.

Counterpicks
  • Talon is quite squishy, even with his Bloodthirster.
  • Too many CCs, or Stealth Sight, may cause Talon some problems, some big problems.
  • Tanky champions, specially Armor Resistance ones will give him a bad time, mostly solotop.

... ... One of the most feared mages mid, and Talon counters him just perfectly. His Cutthroat silences him, and allows you to dash just on him after he uses his ulti to escape, then double tap Shadow Assault and he's dead. ... ...
... ... One other high mage. The reasons are almost the same, silence, close fighting, etc. You have to take care with this one, though, and her non-skillshot stuns. ... ...
... ... The high mobility and MS Talon has won't let her hit you with any of her skillshot spells, wich means you can own her. Just avoid her ultimate, or kill her beforehand, and you'll have free kills mid. ... ...
... ... AD Carries like Caitlyn, Vayne, Kog Mao .. They're easy peasy for you. E to them, Q and you'd be taking half of their life away, chase after them and escape/kill with Shadow Assault. ... ...



Counterpicks

... ... This tough guy has everything to be against you. One good shield, Life steal, burst damage and he's also built offtank. Too tanky, hard for you to go against. ... ...
... ... He can remove your silence, and heal. Also built on Critical Chance, wich will turn the fight against you, or if he's offtank, worse. He slows you down, wich won't let you escape with your ultimate. ... ...
... ... Tanks like Rammus, Shen, Singed, etc .. These guys are just too tough for you to kill. If you can't kill a target in some seconds, then it's not worth it, go away, try something else. ... ...

*- Talon quick Overview

The blade's shadow









space Talon's earliest memories are the darkness of Noxus' underground passages and the reassuring steel of a blade. He remembers no family, warmth, or kindness. Instead, the clink of stolen gold and the security of a wall at his back are all the kinship he has ever craved. Kept alive only by his quick wits and deft thievery, Talon scraped out a living in the seedy underbelly of Noxus. His mastery of the blade quickly marked him as a threat, and Noxian guilds sent assassins to him with a demand: join their ranks or be killed. He left the bodies of his pursuers dumped in Noxus' moat as his response.

The assassination attempts grew increasingly dangerous until one assailant met Talon blade-for-blade in a match of strength. To his surprise, Talon was disarmed and facing down his executioner's sword when the assassin revealed himself to be General Du Couteau. The General offered Talon the choice between death at his hand, or life as an agent of the Noxian High Command. Talon chose life, on the condition that his service was to Du Couteau alone, for the only type of orders he could respect were from one he could not defeat. Talon remained in the shadows, carrying out secret missions on Du Couteau's orders that took him from the frigid lands of Freljord to the inner sanctums of Bandle City. When the general vanished, Talon considered reclaiming his freedom, but he had gained immense respect for Du Couteau after years in his service. He became obsessed with tracking down the general's whereabouts. Talon's suspicions led him to the doors of the Institute of War, where he joined the League of Legends in order to find those responsible for Du Couteau's disappearance.

Skills & Explanation

mercy sp Mercy. Talon deals 10% more damage with his basic attacks to any target that is slowed, stunned, immobilized, or suppressed. sp mercy
sp Noxian Diplomacy. Talon's next basic attack deals an additional 30/60/90/120/150 (+ 0.3) physical damage. If the target is a champion, the target will bleed for 18/36/54/72/90 (+ 0.2) physical damage over 6 seconds, revealing their location for the duration.[*] sp
sp Rake. Talon sends out a volley of daggers that then return back to him, dealing 30/55/80/105/130 (+0.6) physical damage every time it passes through an enemy. Additionally the enemy is slowed by 20/25/30/35/40% for 2 seconds. sp
cutthroat sp Cutthroat. Talon instantly appears behind his target, silencing them for 1 second and amplifying Talon's damage against the target by 3/6/9/12/15% for 3 seconds. sp cutthroat
sp Shadow Assault. Talon disperses a ring of blades and gains stealth for up to 2.5 seconds, gaining 40% Movement Speed. When Talon emerges from stealth, the blades converge on his location. Every time a blade passes through an enemy, they receive 120/190/260 (+0.9) physical damage. sp

*- Runes

Most of you will be waiting for this .. Explanation, as to "Why" did I choose Greater Quintessence of Movement Speed as my Quints.
It's really easy. Talon's Harrass is BOSS. He goes in, damages, and then runs back out. With these Quints, you can do that even better. All you have to do is start with the normal boots, and run around with already 400 MS! Just go in, Cutthroat, Noxian Diplomacy, Rake and walk away before he can even move to attack you. It's such a FUN thing to do.

  • Greater Mark of Attack Damage x9. Swaping ArPen with these. Way better choice. Been trying them for a month or so, and I can tell you that It grants you a way better farm, and easier to kill enemies early game. You don't need the rune's ArPen, with Masteries and Brutalizer, you'll do great. (Late game may require Last Whisper.

  • Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist x9. These are for the squishiness, too, specially if you're going mid. The extra MR that you need to fight against those silly mages. I do not recommand the flat MR ones, since Mages do not deal that much damage early game, you need the resistance for late game.

  • Greater Quintessence of Movement Speed x3. This is my favourite part. As I explained before, with these ladies you can do a lot. With merely the first boots, you'd already have 400 MS, enough to chase, harrass and hunt WHOEVER you want. Also, amazingly great versus ganks, you won't even need flash to escape!
    With whatever next boots you pick (Range 2 speed) you'll reach 420+ MS! Amazing I think, but then wait to see how it goes up with your Youmuu's Ghostblade's active, and Trinity Force. I love them.

  • Resistance , Magic Resistance, perfect against mages!
  • Hardiness , of course, for both minions and AD based champions, makes you less squishy.
  • Tough Skin , You need this to survive more in the jungle, even more.
  • Bladed Armor helps you kill the jungle faster, at least very early game. Very helpful.

Thing here is quite ... Easy. You start with your Rake, to help yourself farm some more, and then get Cutthroat, so you can start harrassing the mid champion. You then get Noxian Diplomacy to deal even more damage, and in some cases, kill the champion just after he flashes away, with the bleeding effect. And then you just maximize Rake, in all three cases.
Why maximize Rake ?
Easy, better farm, and better harrass. Level 1, 2, 3 do not deal that much damage, but when you get to the high levels, you'll see the BIG difference. They'll start avoiding it like hell.

You can get your Noxian Diplomacy first, instead of Cutthroat.
Why ?
Easy, too! Your point in top lane is to lasthit, even more than in mid. You have to let your jungle have his way to the other champion. Besides that, it provides some extra damage for too "Aggresive" enemies. The rest is juuuuust the same!

Yes, it's the same as top lane, but I'll explain why. Cutthroat for jungling is not really useful, besides for the Blue golem, and the Red lizzard. You'll kill Blue golem with your mates help, so at level 1 is useless. You'll get it after, at level 3, when you'll do Red buff. Maximizing Rake helps you kill Wolves, Wraiths and the minions next to the buffs easier, besides providing greater damage when you gank your team, together with the slow effect.

And well, since some people sugested it, there it is!
If you want more damage output with the Noxian Diplomacy & Cutthroat combo, then this is your sequence.
It's based on maxing Noxian Diplomacy as soon as you can, just like it was maxing Rake in the previous three.
I have recently tested it, and I'm not sure wich one I like more, I'm in quite a dilema. Rake gives that nice farming option, hitting minions and champions at the same time, while Noxian Diplomacy gives more output damage, and the bleeding aftereffect, while also exposing you too much to Crowd Controls (Stuns, Slows, Silences, etc).

Starting with boots and potions gives you the very good option to harrass the other guy. Cutthroat, Noxian Diplomacy, Rake, and you run away, even before the silence is gone. Ionian Boots of Lucidity give you that EXTREME CD Reduction, wich helps you harrassing and farming. Careful with your mana, though!
You'll get then those Long Sword, and then The Brutalizer. It gives you EVEN more armour penetration, and some nice damage. You don't need the crit chance, and speed that Youmuu's Ghostblade gives you, so we're not upgrading it yet.
Now, you need more surviability, so ... What's better than Bloodthirster ? You can get life steal, or damage first, your choice.
Zeal, Zeal, Zeal! This one is amazingly good for you. Shadow Assault + Zeal means A LOT of movement, and faster ganks top and bot.
Phage and Sheen, now. I don't really mind the order, get them as you please, depending your needs. If you run out of mana too fast, get Sheen. If you need some more life, and even more slow, get Phage. Then finish with Trinity Force.
Upgrade your The Brutalizer to Youmuu's Ghostblade, since you kinda require it's use. Shadow Assault + Greater Quintessence of Movement Speed x 3 + Trinity Force + Youmuu's Ghostblade = Good positioning in teamfights.. Plus, you can run after very squishy, low life enemies, even tower diving and coming back out.

You can either start with Doran's Blade, or the same as Mid. You need some extra life for top, and that damage output early game is not bad at all, for lasthitting easier, and harrassing.

Cloth Armor & Health Potion x5, those are a MUST. I've tried with Life Steal, but It's way, WAY too squishy, it's impossible. With the help of your teammates at blue, around half the life of the golem, you can start jungling like a Boss, with almost no problems.
You NEED to get your Wriggle's Lantern, easier jungle, more damage and Life Steal! .. Get your boots, and you'll be the perfect ganker. The rest .. Is pretty much the same.

*- The SIXTH & Situational items

As I said somewhere back there, it depends. If you need more Health, Damage, Magic Resistance or .. Whatever bugs you.

Amongst the best choices are:
Frozen Mallet is one good option. Good life, some more damage, and that slow is just rawr. Perfect for running, squishy people.

Warmog's Armor is another good one. An amazing doze of life, special for those cases when you're focused, or simply stay too much in teamfight. You'd get your life around .. 3,8k, or so. Wich is quite impressive. If you do get this, I recommand getting Atma's Impaler.

Black Cleaver. This big thing is a really good addition. More AS and AD, wich will help you hit your Infinity Edge even more. Plus, let's do not forget about the Black Cleaver passive.

Bloodthirster, another one! A great deal of damage, more Life Steal. When you're just too fed, and they can't handle you. Kill them EVEN faster, though I do recommand getting Black Cleaver instead.

Quicksilver Sash. Malzahar's being a problem ? .. Maybe Udyr stuns you too much ? .. Veigar ? .. Leona ? .. Whoever! Stuns, inhabilitations, etc.. This is YOUR item, for those cases.

Hexdrinker would be a good option against some too strong mage. You could it get before, or immediately after The Brutalizer.

Banshee's Veil is also one good option against mages, just like Quicksilver Sash or Hexdrinker, whatever works better against your enemy team.

Manamune was also recommanded down there, on the comments. People said it provides the mana Talon lacks, so you could harras, and spam your abilities like a baws.
...

One last addition, I almost forgot:
Guardian Angel. This item, if your damage is good enough already, and only if you've got Bloodthirster, is a very good addition. It's a second life, every five minutes. Let them kill you, and watch how they die while they try to camp your body. Ressurect, use your ulti and dash away.

*- Boots. Wich ones to get ?

Recommanded Boots
sp The best boots for talon, providing extra CD reduction, so you can spam your abilities all you want. Talon bases his damage on SKILLS, and not Autoattacks, so you have to use them as often as possible. sp
sp The second boots I recommand, even though I never take them (xD). These provide you EXTRA MS. Chasing, ganking, moving around as flash. These boots, Boots of Swiftness are better than Mobility Boots since you will spend most of the time in fights, or attacking, you won't get the full +5 bonus from the Mobility ones. sp


Situational Boots
sp Perfect against too many CCs, slowdowns or inhabilitations, also good against strong mages. sp
sp Just like the previous ones, though this boots focus more on melee fighters. Take them when they are a problem. sp

*- Why should you take Trinity Force ?

So, let's start with Maths.

Let's think this way:
Our stats should be something like this:
  • Health: 1970 HP
  • Crit Chance: 0%
  • Attack Damage (With the mentioned items): 202,8 AD (105,8 + 25 + 60).


If we'd get another Bloodthirster:
  • Health: 1970 HP
  • Crit Chance: 0%
  • Attack Damage (With the mentioned items): 262,8 AD (105,8 + 25 + 60 + 60)
  • Our autoattacks should do about: 230 ~ 290.
  • Our noxian diplomacy would do: 228, 84 (150 + 78, 4).
  • Our critical strike would do: 460 ~ 560.
  • Adding all that together: 250 + 228, 84 = 478 , 84. If we get a critical: 478, 84 * 2 = 975, 68 damage.


Now, let's get an Infinity Edge, instead:
  • Health: 1970 HP
  • Crit Chance: 30%
  • Attack Damage (With the mentioned items): 282,8 AD (105,8 + 25 + 60 + 80)
  • Our autoattacks should do about: 250 ~ 310.
  • Our noxian diplomacy would do: 234, 84 (150 + 84, 4).
  • Our critical strike would do: 650 ~ 750.
  • Adding all that together: 280 + 234, 84 = 514 , 84. If we get a critical: 514 , 84 * 2,5 = 1287,1 damage.
  • We'd only have 30 % Critical Chance, so that means, out of 10 Autoattacks, we'd get 3 criticals.


Now, let's go with Trinity Force:

  • Health: 1970 HP
  • Crit Chance: 15%
  • Attack Damage (With the mentioned items): 232,8 AD (105,8 + 25 + 60 + 30)
  • Our autoattacks should do about: 200 ~ 260.
  • Our noxian diplomacy would do: 219, 84 (150 + 69, 84).
  • Our critical strike would do: 460.
  • Trinity Force's passive: 105,8 * 1,5 = 158,7 EXTRA damage.
  • Adding all that together: 230 + 219, 84 + 158,7 = 611,34 Each time we use ND.
  • Now, if we'd be lucky, and got a Critical Strike: 799 * 2 = 1222,68.

Now, let's compare 10 Autoattacks, with these conditions. Since We've got extra AS with Trinity Force, let's see how many attacks per second we'd get with each, and then we'll meassure ten seconds.

With Infinity Edge:
  • Base attack speed (0,668) * 18 Levels = 0,98 AS At level 18, we'll take that as one attack per second.

With Trinity Force:
  • Base attack speed (0,668) * 18 Levels = 0,98 AS At level 18.
  • 0,98 * 30% from Trinity Force = 1,3 AS at level 18.

So .. If we'll meassure 10 seconds, we'd get these autoattacks, after the first, starting hits:
Infinity Edge: 10 Autoattacks. Two of these attacks would be critical.
Trinity Force: 13 Autoattacks. Also, two autoattacks would be critical.

There's something to mention, too:
  • You could use Noxian Diplomacy each 3 seconds (Applying the cooldown reduction).

So, again, let's start:

    Trinity Force wins, again. But we can get EVEN more far:

    Add the slow Trinity Force gives, wich means 10 % more damage. (5205,36 * 1,10). We'd get a total of 5725,9 Damage, over 10 Seconds.
    Now add the value of the Health it gives, the MS for chasing and escaping.

*- What is Talon, Really ?

The title says it, what is he, really ? .. Burst damage, assasin, roamer ? .. What else ? .. Good vs Ranged Carries, Epic in mid lane, squishy jungle.. Anything else ? ..
Yes.
Over all of that, he's a champion, and his use is to win a match. Forget what Riot says, Assassin or not, builds are viable, if they work.
I'm telling this for one simple reason, flamers.
When people see Talon with one or two sustain items, they go like :wtftrollface:, and start raging. And I'll just remember, even if you like it, or not, that Talon is a champion, you build him the way you need to, in order to be alive, kill, and win the match. Talon, once he's got some good levels, and with only two or three damage items .. (Following this same guide, Ionian Boots of Lucidity, The Brutalizer, Bloodthirster) has already enough damage to kill a lot of people, here and there. Sustain will help, too, so that's why I am adding this here..

ATMOG

People, this IS viable.

Warmog's Armor. This little thing that costs 3k gold gives you 1,2k HP points. This is WAY enough for you to be able to escape after whatever teamfight you've been into, and why not, in 1 vs 1 helps a lot.
Atma's Impaler. Together with Warmog's Armor, is a brutal combo. The armour it gives helps you, as well, in 1 vs 1, and giving you even more resistance. And since you'll be loosing some DMG by taking Warmog, Atma gives it to you with the nice passive.

I am aware that this combo may make you loose some damage, but it will give you enough sustain to do a lot of things more, like chase for a longer time, escaping, etc.

Hurray for Talon, as whatever you wanna build him, not as what "Riot" marks him!

*- Summoner Spells

Best Options

sp Flash: You need it. Sometimes you cannot reach the oponent to strike completly with Shadow Assault, or maybe you're being focused, and have to get out of the teamfight. You're squishy, and therefor, you need this. sp
sp Exhaust: Mid or Toplane, pretty much the same. When you harrass them, they'll be backing out, and whenever you want to kill them you'll need this. With the Masteries, you lower their armour even more, and you also trigger your passive, wich makes you deal more damage. Rake, Exhaust for ganks, is also very very useful. sp
sp Smite: This is a must, for jungling. Talon cannot jungle without this, you'd be killed quite fast. You get some good farming option, stealing creeps here and there, when your Blue and Red buffs are out. sp
sp Ignite is a great choice, the one I recommand for mid. Just what Talon needs, extra damage. If you use ignite during your Shadow Assault, it will force your blades to come back. Cutthroat, Rake, Noxian Diplomacy, Shadow Assault & Ingite for pure efficiency. You'll be dealing top damage with said combo. sp


Other Good Options

sp Ghost, combined with Flash can be a very deffensive option, or a very offensive one. Use Shadow Assault, Ghost and just chase after them, dealing almost complete damage with your ulti. If they still escape, Flash + Cutthroat, and finish'em. sp
sp I've seen some people picking Heal and Flash. I do not consider it such a good option, since Talon is quite squishy, and 200-500 more HP in teamfight, or while being focused won't do much. Let the tanks, or supports take this skill. Still viable, in some cases. so
sp It is .. Still viable, in some cases. You can do some pretty good ganks, with some wards placed around. Though if you're using it for top, don't. You already have good speed movement to go B and come back fast. sp



Bad Options

sp AP for Talon is .. Just not useful. And If you want Attack Speed, just take one AD+AS item, as the sixth. sp
sp If you need something like this .. And it's not gonna be very often, just buy Quicksilver Sash. sp

*- Jungling (Tips and Route).

Okay, so .. As we stated before, Life Steal as a first item for jungling with Talon doesn't really work, so we'll go with Cloth Armor and five heal pots. The route should be something around ... This:

NOTE: Noxian Diplomacy resets autoattack timer, so use it IMMEDIATELY after you autoattack, for better efficiency.

#1 We'll start at Blue Buff. Ask your teammates to help you with blue, so you go even faster. Some hits, to half life perhaps, and they can go back to their lane. Since we're starting with Rake, use it once, after the pull, and then as much as you can, untill you can kill him. You'll level up to 2, take Noxian Diplomacy. Don't forget about using your potion, and if you need another one, use up to 2, total.

#2 Now wolves. Go in, attack the one in the middle and instantly use Rake and activate your Heal potion. Then Noxian Diplomacy, and since you'll leave him very low life, switch to the one to the right, the big wolf will die because of the aftereffect of Noxian Diplomacy and Bladed Armor . Use Rake again, and Noxian Diplomacy, switch to the last one when he's very low life. On your way to #3, use another potion.

#3 Rake, activate another heal potion, Cutthroat and Noxian Diplomacy to the big wraith. Just like before, when he's low life, switch to the next, and so on. On your way to the golems, activate another potion, your fourth.

#4 Autoattack the big guy, Activate your potion, use Cutthroat on the big golem, Noxian Diplomacy and Rake, to hit them both. Noxian Diplomacy whenever you can, again, and when the big golem is very, very low life, switch to the other one. Whenever you kill them you might, or might not have enough gold for Vampiric Scepter. If you don't, go and kill Wraiths, just like before. Now go Base, buy Vampiric Scepter, and come to the Red Buff.

#5 Cutthroat to the big Lizard, Rake on all of them and Noxian Diplomacy. Use Rake and Noxian Diplomacy as much as you can. Smite him when he's half life, and finish him. Then do the other two and you'll be ready to gank whatever line needs it. You are also able to do whatever you want in the jungle now, you can take any of them.

## Ganking ##

The skill sequence is quite easy. Tell your friend to go on and pull him, attack him. Go in and use Cutthroat to silence any escape spell, or damage spell he might have, then Noxian Diplomacy, just after one autoattack, and finally Rake, so you make sure he doesn't run away. If you happen to be level 6, after you use Rake, and if he's low life enough, double tap R, Shadow Assault, wich will cause the blades to go out, and come back in fast, dealing great damage.
