Introduction

Hi! I am Best Lulu NA, and welcome to my first guide! Lulu is a ranged support champion with a ton of crowd control. A good Lulu player can disrupt and dismantle enemy teams while empowering her own, dominating every fight. She is very versatile and can fit into almost any team comp. Whether you're playing the ol' Yasuo wombo combo, or the protect the carry comp, Lulu is the best pick! Don't forget to add this to your Item Sets!

About Me

As you may know, I am Best Lulu NA. Originally named "PsychoticBurrito," I have climbed from the very pits of Bronze themselves! As of Season 5, I have been in Plat, and am currently hovering around low to mid plat-ish.

Guide Top

AP Lulu - Item Explanation

Doran's Ring - Standard AP starting item. Gives a decent amount of AP and mana regen

Corrupting Potion - Buy this when you are expected to be bullied in-lane or want to out-sustain the enemy. Don't forget, popping a potion gives a temporary damage buff!

Rod of Ages - After the mage update, its late-game was slightly nerfed, but it still helps Lulu scale very well into the mid-game. It also helps her survive against bursty, all-in assassisns and gives her more durability against tanks and bruisers.

Ionian Boots of Lucidity - These have been improved since Season 5, as they now give 10% CD on Summoner Spells.

Mercury's Treads - These are good against a CC heavy team comp. I do not normally take these unless I am losing lane or am against a very CC heavy team.

Sorcerer's Shoes - Still pretty good.

Boots of Swiftness These are great on Lulu, as they give her a lot of extra Movement Speed, which works wonders with Whimsy.

Lich Bane - This is a great item on Lulu, as she does not put out continuous damage. Not only does Lich Bane allows her to add to her burst, she can win free trades by just using Help, Pix!. This will proc Lich Bane, and do tons of damage!

Abyssal Scepter - Pretty straight forward. Gives AP, MR, CDR, and reduces the enemy's MR.

Rabadon's Deathcap - Tons of damage.

Luden's Echo - Tons of damage to lots of people.

Iceborn Gauntlet - This item is massively underrated. On Lulu, you can permaslow the enemy by constantly cycling through your spells, spacing them out over the 2 second cooldown. You can speed yourself up and slow them down every 2 seconds.

Liandry's Torment - This item is good against people with no MR or are building a lot of HP.

Zhonya's Hourglass - As of the mage update, I like Zhonyas much more than before. Because of the new change, it is much easier to build and gives CDR. Its only trade off is that it does not give as much AP as before

Void Staff - For the most part, I normally get Liandry's Torment or Abyssal Scepter over Void Staff because it doesn't give any tanky stats. I only buy Void Staff when I am very far ahead , or they have a lot of MR.

Morellonomicon - As of the mage update, Morellonomicon has been my go-to item for AP Lulu because of its huge increase in AP, new mana boost, and passive.

Guardian Angel - Live again. Why not?

Support Lulu - Items Explanation

Ionian Boots of Lucidity - These have been improved since Season 5, as they now give 10% CD on Summoner Spells.

Mercury's Treads - These are good against a CC heavy team comp. I do not normally take these unless I am losing lane or am against a very CC heavy team.

Boots of Swiftness These are great on Lulu, as they give her a lot of extra Movement Speed, which works wonders with Whimsy.

Because of the new change, it is much easier to build, and gives CDR.

Frost Queen's Claim - This recently got nerfed, so it's not as good anymore. It's still a viable option if you need mana regen and the 10% CDR (Not as good on AP Lulu, but still great on Support Lulu.).

Frozen Heart - This item is great versus a team with a lot of attack speed.

Mikael's Crucible - Good versus CC and AP.

Locket of the Iron Solari - Necessary on Support Lulu.

Banshee's Veil Great versus Blitzcrank, Thresh, or any champion that has to mark you before pulling off a combo, like Akali or LeBlanc.

Eye of the Watchers - Great on Support Lulu if you need a more defensive route, as it frees up an item slot.

Warmog's Armor - Great for more sustain.

Zeke's Harbinger - Great with a hypercarry type ADC like Vayne, Tristana, Corki, or Jinx.

Ardent Censer - This item is rarely used, but is great on Lulu as she can shield people and constantly give them attack speed.

On-Hit/Machine Gun Lulu - Items Explanation

Blade of the Ruined King - This item is essential on on-hit Lulu, as it allows her to dish out % health damage with a very high attack speed.

Wit's End - Tank shredder and MR boost.

Runaan's Hurricane - Hit 3 enemies instead of 1.

Frozen Mallet - More kiting + health = more living

Mercurial Scimitar - **** CC

The Bloodthirster - More healing and more damage for crits.

The Black Cleaver - With Runaan's Hurricane, The Black Cleaver will apply its passive onto three enemies instead of one. It also increases your survivability as you can now kite easier and will have more health.

Guardian Angel - Live again. Why not?

Guide Top

Skill Sequence

AP Lulu - Taking Help, Pix! at Level 1 is normally better as Lulu it allows her to poke without taking any damage. Most abilities do not do more than around 80 damage (the base shield stat), allowing you to win any trade. Proceed to max Glitterlance, taking a point in Wild Growth whenever you can. At Level 8, you have a choice. Maxing E will give you immense damage, and allow you to demolish trades, while maxing W will give you more roaming and 1v1 potential.

Defensive Support Lulu - Maxing Help, Pix! early is better, as you will be playing more defensively. It also helps for poking and protecting. I max Whimsy second because you can roam more effectively, and also Polymorph the enemies for a longer period of time. Max Glitterlance last, as you will only use it for the CC.

Offensive Support Lulu - I like to max Glitterlance first, because of its damage and CC. When in lane, annoy the enemy with your constant Q's and E's. Max Q>E>W.

On-Hit/Machine Gun Lulu - Max W first, because it will allow you to be able to kite with an enormous attack speed buff. E second, for the shield. And Q third, for the CC.

Masteries

Full AP Lulu - This is pretty simple. Thunderlord's Decree is very strong on Lulu, as just AA-E-AA does about 100-150 damage at Level 1. Sorcery is good on Lulu as it allows her to do more damage with her spells (obviously). I don't take 5 points in Meditation or Merciless because a little mana regen and extra damage is better then having only one or the other. Everything else is pretty standard.

Defensive Support Lulu - Windspeaker's Blessing works perfectly with Lulu's Help, Pix! and Mikael's Crucible. Merciless is not needed as you will not be dealing damage. Bandit is used for more gold.

On-Hit/Machine Gun Lulu - 12//0/18 against people who will try to fight you early game, and 18/0/12 for people who will be strong late game.

Guide Top

Runes

Greater Mark of Hybrid Penetration - These are great on Lulu because they work very well with her passive, Lich Bane, and Iceborn Gauntlet.

Greater Quintessence of Armor - This is great on Support Lulu, as you will be against an ADC.

Greater Glyph of Magic Resist - Great on Support Lulu because most supports deal magic damage.

Greater Seal of Health - This is great on Support Lulu as you will already have Armor from Greater Quintessence of Armor, and MR from Greater Glyph of Magic Resist.

Greater Seal of Magic Resist - Instead of taking Greater Glyph of Magic Resist, I take Greater Seal of Magic Resist because I need the 10% CDR in Glyphs in order to hit max CDR. Swap these with 9 Greater Seal of Scaling Armor when against AD opponents.

Greater Glyph of Scaling Cooldown Reduction - These are good on Lulu because they allow her to hit max CDR. Swap these with 7 Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist when against AP opponents.

Greater Glyph of Magic Resist - I take these when against AP opponents. Swap these with 2 Greater Glyph of Attack Speed when against AD opponents.

Greater Quintessence of Ability Power - Essential to any AP mid-laner.

Greater Glyph of Mana Regeneration - Allows you to spam abilities a little more.

Greater Mark of Attack Speed - Start the game off with more attack speed, why not?

Greater Mark of Attack Damage - For all you noobs who can't CS

Greater Quintessence of Movement Speed - Easy kiting

Greater Quintessence of Attack Speed - Only take it if you can't CS properly

Summoner Spells

Flash - Essential on almost every champion.

Ignite - Take this when you have kill pressure.

Teleport - This isn't as good in Season 6, as they got rid of the reduced time when TP'ing to turrets, although this is still good against a roaming enemy laner.

Ghost - I rarely ever take this, and only use this when I am against a team with a lot of skill shots.

Cleanse - This is pretty good on Lulu, as she can't buff anyone if she is CC'ed.

Exhaust - Good against AD assassin mid-laners, although I normally take Ignite.

Spells

Pix, Faerie Companion - Honestly, this is one of my favorite passives in the game. It turns Lulu into a mini gun. Here are the stats:
Pix, Faerie Companion fires a barrage of 3 bolts, dealing 3 + (4 per 2 levels) magic damage each, totaling 9 + (12 per 2 levels) (+15% of ability power), at whomever Lulu attacks.
Casting Help, Pix! on an ally transfers Pix's help to them for the duration.
These bolts are homing but can be blocked by other units.

Glitterlance - This is your bread and butter.
Lulu and Pix, Faerie Companion each fire a magic bolt towards the target point, dealing magic damage to all units they pass through and Slow icon slowing them by 80%, decaying over a short duration. Units are only affected by one bolt.
MAGIC DAMAGE: 80 / 125 / 170 / 215 / 260 (+ 50% AP)
SLOW DURATION: 1 / 1.25 / 1.5 / 1.75 / 2
A trick I like to do is to Help, Pix! and Glitterlance the enemy. 9 times out of 10, they will never notice you casted Help, Pix! on the minion. Just watch out for your mana bar, this combo costs a lot of mana. Also, if you take Intelligence over Precision , you can use Glitterlance twice before Help, Pix! expires (Thanks to The Facepalmer for that extra tip!).

Whimsy - This ability is stupidly overpowered. You and your allies can escape almost any situation. On average, I get about an additional 40%-65% Movement Speed because it gives an additional 10% Movespeed per 100 AP.
Lulu casts erratic magic upon the target champion, giving them bonus attack speed and 30% (+ 5% per 100 AP) bonus movement speed for the next few seconds if they are an ally, or polymorphing them and slowing them by a flat 60 for a shorter duration if they are an enemy.
DURATION: 3 / 3.25 / 3.5 / 3.75 / 4
POLYMORPH DURATION: 1.25 / 1.5 / 1.75 / 2 / 2.25
BONUS ATTACK SPEED: 15 / 20 / 25 / 30 / 35%

Help, Pix! - This ability is actually very interesting. You can set up very nice long range snipes by using Help, Pix! and waiting until they group to Glitterlance.
Lulu sends Pix, Faerie Companion to the target unit, shielding them for up to 6 seconds if they are an allied champion, or dealing magic damage to her target and granting True Sight icon true sight of them for 4 seconds if they are an enemy.
SHIELD STRENGTH: 80 / 120 / 160 / 200 / 240 (+ 60% AP)
MAGIC DAMAGE: 80 / 110 / 140 / 170 / 200 (+ 40% AP)

Wild Growth - This is one of my favorite abilities. It's way better than Intervention because it's duration lasts way longer than Intervention.
Lulu enlarges the target allied champion, Airborne icon knocking up units around them for 0.75 seconds, and giving her target bonus health and causing them to slow nearby units for 7 seconds.
BONUS HEALTH: 300 / 450 / 600 (+ 50% AP) health
SLOW: 30 / 45 / 60%
A cool trick I like to do when in a 1v1 is to Flash then immediately Wild Growth. It knocks the enemy up, allowing you to combo it into your Whimsy, rendering them useless for a full 3 seconds. Just be careful that you wont get ganked, as you are using both of your escapes.

Pros / Cons

PROS
-Tons of CC
-Can still be relevant in games even after losing lane
-Buff teammates
-Disable enemies
-Great 1v1 potential with her W
-Very strong from Levels 1-6
-High mobility with her W
-Can save allies in a breeze
-Facilitate ganks
-High base stats

CONS
-Unless you're full AP or on-hit Lulu, it is very hard to solo carry a game
-Relies on teammates to dish out consistent damage (unless you're on-hit)
-Tends to be weaker from Levels 7-10
-Easily killed when CC'ed

In Lane

In lane, you should focus on farming and short trades. If your cannon minion is low on HP, try to trade with the enemy laner. Most likely, they will be more focused on the minion and will react too late to your poke. Just try not to push the wave too far out. Here is a slightly outdated (but still useful) map of the best places to put Pink Wards.

Guide Top

In Teamfights

In teamfights, you want to play just like a support. Stay with your carries and don't stray too far away. Although (unless your teammate is more fed), use Wild Growth on yourself instead of an ally unless he is about to die and you are safe.

Guide Top

Ganking & Roaming

When you your teammate is coming to gank, don't change your play style until the enemy can actually see your teammate. Proceed to then Whimsy yourself or teammate and Help, Pix! + Glitterlance the enemy. If they are still alive, you can Flash + Wild Growth to knock them up and slow them. If your teammate is close to them, you can use Wild Growth on your teammate instead.
When roaming, do not use Whimsy on the enemy, just Help, Pix! --> AA --> Glitterlance --> Flash + Wild Growth.

Guide Top

Summary

Overall, I believe Lulu is a very versatile champion who can adapt to very many play styles. She relies heavily on her team, which can be a pain when your team is losing. As long as you remain calm and remember to cycle through your spells instead of spamming them, you should win every 1v1 and many teamfights. Although, you should be able to carry your team as long as one other lane is winning. In my opinion, AP Lulu and on-hit Lulu should only be played after you are comfortable with support Lulu.
