Not Updated For Current Season
The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
Sona can be played a few ways, but even with the nerfs she still fits best into a straight support build. That is what this guide is focused on. Sona can be a huge game changer, as such she is often target like she is a carry so you need to be durable yet still have enough AP to be dangerous both healing and attacking.
Marks - Magic Penetration
Seals - Mana Regeneration
Glyph - AP per Level or MR per Level
Ok I grab magic pen on marks for a little added damage early game. This is kind of nice just because Sona has a very effective harass spell. Seals aren't negotiable for me. With her nerfs mana is a big problem for her even with a AA staff and early game this is really going to make a huge difference. Glyphs are 50/50 for me. I like the AP from glyphs if my team looks like it would benefit from a little extra damage, but in most cases I go for MR because it is burst that really tends to bring Sona down and most burst is magical so this can really off set the amount of times you die.
Masteries I go good ole 9/0/21. I like the magic penetration from offense more than what little defence you can get from the defense tree for 9 points and the mana regeneration, movement speed buff and summoner spell cd reduction is irreplaceable for me.
Boots - Mercury Treads - You are going to be targeted and CC constantly. These are a must have.
AA Staff - You need the mana and the mana regeneration. Sona is kind of a spam character so you
will easily max out this item early. Not to mention it will end up giving you about
100 AP or so.
Spirit Visage - This will keep you alive. It will boost your self heals by 20%, give you CD
reduction as well as health and more MR resist. Trust me if it's a long game this
will definitely save your life.
Zhonya's Hourglass - This is a great item for any AP character. It gives you a solid amount
of AP a nice bit of Armor and has an active that makes you invincible for 2
seconds at the cost of not being able to take any actions.
These last two items are really up to you. The three items I usually play around with are
Abysmal Scepter - AP, AOE magic penetration for your team and more MR.
Aegis of the Legion - Give you HP boost, AR and MR as well as boosting the AR, MR and
physical damage of near by ally champions. Nice support item.
Rabadon's Deathcap - Massive AP boost and a 30% bonus to your current AP. If you need AP at
any point this is the item to get.
The important thing is to max out Aria of Perseverance (w) while taking Cresendo (r) whenever you can. The next skill you should max out is Hymn of Valor (q) this will give your teammates added damage and allow you to harass and final hit running champs every now and then. Finally max out Song of Celerity (e) this skill is nice but really it isn't going to be as useful to you or your team as much as the other skills are. At level 1 take q to harass and possibly get a first blood if you are ganking, levels 2-3 take w and at level 4 take e.
Clarity and Flash. Really it goes back to my already mentioned points. You burn through mana very fast even with good mana regeneration. Clarity will help you a lot early game and it can also be used to help out your laning partner. Since this is a support guide I really do recommend it. You will also summon nerd rage like no other. Thus when the fury has been unleased flash is great for getting yourself out of sticky situations. Some people prefer ghost but basically flash will get you out of range and you can then use your e for the speed boost so I don't see ghost being to useful.
Again this is a support build. You aren't going to get many kill, but you still very well may carry the game. your games will probably end like this 3/2/25. You are there to keep your team up and in the fight when others would normally need to retreat. Use Cresendo defensively and you can save yourself and others from a lot of ganks, use it offensively (maybe with a positioned flash) and you can disable a whole enemy team in a team fight.
Your teamwork is to stay in the back and spam w. When you aren't spamming w you are hitting q for damage or e so your team can either chase or retreat. That's pretty much it.
