I've based my Katarina's build on this guide and it really works because you are really tanky and people tend to focus so you will get all the damage until your carry kills all the other team.
Recommended build.

Well as I still use the heavy mpen combosition, I still dish out tons of damage while having tanky items.

You are not very bright. Almost every tank that's classified as a tank can still dish out serious damage and/or cc WHILE absorbing damage. Garen is not a tank. If you build sunfire and warmogs, you will fall off and lose the game. however, if you build sunfire and abyssal on malphite, a real tank, you will do ***TONS of damage and have ***TONS of cc. So you basically want him to build even LESS damage? Sure, the enemy team will focus a kat without a single damage item, if they're completely ******ed. As I said before, If you build NO DAMAGE on katarina, the enemy team will completely ignore you. It's like going 5 warmogs on ahri. If you run into a teamfight, you may THINK it'd be tempting to try to kill her, but it isn't. she will be ignored, she will deal no damage, and her team will get wiped out.

Everyone's basing their opinions on what they see in normal Kats... They don't understand that you're trying to create a new meta of tanks :/ I suppose that this Kat is viable, mostly because of her Shunpo and her passive. The point of a tank is to be attracting attention (shake that booty!), and to be a sponge for the enemy team's damage, so that your carries can do more damage. So obviously, you won't be focusing on damage items.
I think that you should change the Sorcerers Shoes as they are very confusing. A large amount of magic pen creates the assumption that you are TRYING to dish out damage, but that obviously isn't true with this build. Perhaps leave them as a situational only, if the other team is seriously sucking? Players should be focusing on trying to get Merc Treads or Ninja Tabis, if they are truly going for the tank path.
Also, the items like Haunting Guise just really makes the build confusing. It's as if you are trying to go for a very weird offtank-damage. You can't fulfill the role of tank as well, and you don't dish out that much damage either... Perhaps build a zhonya's instead, so that you can tank all of the damage and not end up giving a kill? If you're truly a tank, then by the point that you are low, then your carries should be able to clean up by themselves.
I think it's a viable build, and though strange compared to the other Kat's, I +1 it!

If you want to make a tanky katarina while still doing some damage, you should probably go with Sorcerer's Shoes for magic pen, Rylai's Crystal Scepter for Health, Zhonya's Hourglass for Armor, and then Abyssal Scepter for magic resist. Use the typical tank runes with armor, magic resist, health regen, and others and you can be pretty difficult to use. If you think your tanky enough with those four items you can get more damage items or you can get regular tank items.

Tbh anyone can play a tank if you give them a similar build its just that it make more sense for others to be tanks because it maximizes their abilities. I created a tank Ezreal using a similar build as yours and i dominated, but it isnt his role to be the tank. Either way great guide and very informative,
