The first tankplank guide I saw was at leaguecraft mady by Jurrasick. Somehow I felt, that this idea could be amazing, but I dont think that his build is very viable. So why should a gangplank be rather a tank than a dps ? It´s easy: With some cooldown you are very hard to kill with your e skill "remove scurvy". For real this is the deal, because this is like cleanse + heal together, but with the difference that you can have it every 10 seconds. Further your passive is a great skill to pull an enemy out so your team can kill easily after you buffed everyone with ad + speed and one more thing: You can stand in your own Ulti very long ! ;)
Because you are a tank you need some armour/mr runes, quite logical. Still you are an AD char, so some armour penetration is needed. Further to spam your skills you need some backup with your mana regen. so its better to have some mana reg runes.
Here again some crit, cd reduction, Armour/Mr and Mana regen. Masteries with some extra exp and a point on teleport.
Starting off with a dorans shield will give you some armour, life and life regen. so it will make you tankier alround. A perfect item to prevent the first blood. If you believe it or not, I did many first bloods with tankplank, because the most people just tried to put me down, but forgot my passive and my damage output with raising morale. Then I go on with a crystal for some xtra hp and boots to catch up with people who try to run. After some farming you can upgrade your boots in mercury threads (vs heavy cc team or ap lane) or nija tabis (vs heavy auto attack teams) and your spirit visage. Some will say for what this item ? Okey you will get some hp, cd reduction, magic resist and your healing effect will be greater. Thats a cheap overall early game item (You can sell it anways after dorans shield). Then get a chain vest or a negatron cloak, depending on wether your enemies are more ad or ap. Then its the standart tank thing, get the force of nature, warmogs and frozen heart in the row you need it more. If its a real heavy ad team then better get thornmail etc. you know how it works :) If you have spirit visage and frozen heart you will have 30% cool down which is totally awesome with gangplank. Meaning every 10 secs a heal and cleans and like every ~45 secs your ulti !
Put the first point in raising morale because its a great skill for you and your lane mate. You get some extra AD + Move speed. Great thing for getting first blood :D As you are a tank you will focus on remove scurvy and raising morale. Also you have to get parley to farm better, but that wont be the priority. Forget the critplank, you are a tank now.
I think with teleport and fortify tankplank shows one of his greatest streghts: He has a perfect lane control and can defend a lane very well with his ulti and those summoner spells. Further he can reach the towers faster with raising morals. With those skills your enemies will have true problems to get the turrets down.
