Not Updated For Current Season
The masteries shown here are not yet updated for the current season, the guide author needs to set up the new masteries. As such, they will be different than the masteries you see in-game.
Flash is great offensively or defensively.
Ignite is just fun.
Fortify is great if you're support.
Teleport is good for solo middle. If you need to Recall, you can get back into the action quickly.
Ghost/Exhaust aren't needed thanks to Zilean's Timewarp ability.
Everything else is a matter of personal preference.
I went 9/0/21 because it expresses how I personally play Zilean. Half offense, half support. Unfortunately, not many options lie open to caster's in the Offense tree past the initial 9 points (or 10 if you want 10 extra AP while Ignite is on cooldown.)
Time Bomb for harrassing.
At level 2 you should choose Rewind so you can "double bomb". Double bombing is a great harassment technique which is executed by placing a Time Bomb, Rewinding to ready another Time Bomb, and placing a second one. The moment the second bomb is placed, the first one explodes! The second one will still take 4 seconds to go off, but your enemy will be running in fear at this point!
Timewarping in and out of battle is recommended. You will have a lot of fun double bombing, but remember to save mana in case you or someone else needs a Chrono Shift rez.
Try to get Golem buff as often as possible, and help carry your teammates into the enemy base. Your abilities can turn the tide of an otherwise evenly matched battle! Try to keep tanks or a well-fed DPS member alive with your Chrono Shift, and use Timewarp to slow any injured enemies. Also, consider using Rewind outside of combat to speed up your Chrono Shift cooldown. You'll never know when you need it!
I specialized in the strengths of certain runes, since going for just one enhancement can leave you lacking in other aspects.
Marks are great for Magic Penetration. These seem to help more than straight AP, and it's probably the most noticeable Mark upgrade for casters.
Seals have the Clarity family, which is mana regen that levels up as you do. If you're not a fan of "per level" runes, consider that Clarity runes surpass their flat mana regen counter-part by level 4...
Glyphs and Quints are all Cooldown Reduction. Though expensive, Zilean is all about manipulating time, and the faster you can destroy and enemy, or save a friend, the better!
This is probably the most optional part of the guide. When choosing items, there are a few questions you need to ask yourself.
Am I doing 3v3 or 5v5?
What are my opponents abilities/items?
What are my teammates abilities?
Am I soloing or sharing a lane with another champion?
The items I've listed are the best thing I have come up with so far, but it doesn't mean they will work for everyone's play-style, or in any situation. I will say that the Soulstealer does work rather well with this character, as you are harder to kill, and can stack assists quickly. But I encourage you to have fun, and feel free to try new things out!
Feel free to leave comments or questions, and good luck to all of you!
